Principal Notes: Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Welcome to the midway point of Term 2. This is a busy time for staff and students at school as we get into the real mahi of the year. Our Seniors are busy working on internal assessments and studying towards internals. At this stage of the year we would expect: Year 11s to have over 30 credits towards their Level 1 qualification and to be over halfway

towards gaining Literacy and Numeracy. Year 12s to have over 40 credits towards Level 2 and students really focussed on gaining their

literacy requirements for University Entrance. Year 13s should also be approaching the halfway mark towards their Level 3 qualification. In addition, we hope that at all times, senior students who aim to get MERIT or EXCELLENCE Endorsement know how they are progressing towards that goal. In the Junior School parents should have received their Childs first report for the year. The report is focussed on Academic Feedback (things they are doing well or need to improve on), and Feed-forward (what that improvement looks like). Using this information at home is valuable as it helps parents, family and whanau set goals to improve achievement over the course of the rest of the term and year. The Juniors will be looking closely at their report in Whanau Class and do some goal setting that will lead to Academic Mentoring for students. This work is being developed by Ms Lawrence and Mrs Cast. There will be a Junior Report Evening from 2.30 pm to 7.30 pm on Wednesday 15th June and a Senior Report Evening on Wednesday 29th June from 2.30 pm to 7.30 pm. I encourage parents to attend and learn more about what is happening for your child and what you can do to support their learning. The stronger the relationship between school and home the stronger the outcomes for our children. Farewell to International Students We farewell our International Students at the end of this term. Many of the students have been here for over 6 months. I know (as a host parent), they enrich our lives in so many ways and contribute towards our diversity. We wish them well on their travels and future endeavours. Staff Only Days There are 2 staff only days this term. On Tuesday 14th June, the staff only day is focussed on Restoration Practices. This will be led by the Ministry of Education and it builds on our work over the last 10 years to support our relationships in school. The second staff only day was approved by the BOT and is focussed on improving our appraisal and performance management as we look to embed the new performance management processes across the school. This will support improved teaching and learning and as a result outcomes to our tamariki. Hapu Cross Country Thanks to Mr Gayton and other staff who organised the school cross-country. It may well have been a warm May but it was certainly wet as we had to postpone the event until the weather was in our favour. The event had good participation and the results are published in this newsletter.

NZQA News

Seniors students are required to pay NZQA Fees on an annual basis. The fee is $76.70 and must be paid to the school accounts office by Friday 2

nd September.

Failure to pay the fee by this date will mean as a student or caregiver you must deal directly with NZQA and arrange a payment through them. Scholarship NCEA now has a charge of $30.00 per exam subject.

There are also late fees which you may incur. Failure to pay fees will also mean a student’s record of learning is not updated at NZQA and your NCEA Exam Results will not be available to you. Please contact me at school should you have any concerns.

Le couscous, c'est délicieux!

As part of a module on traveling and Morocco, the French combined senior class cooked couscous in two flavours: vegetarian and chicken. It smelled so nice that people passing by popped in to have a taste. The comments were unanimous: Délicieux! Why encourage your children to learn another language? An interesting article on the Ministry of Education website reminds us of the following benefits: the ability to communicate across cultures is an advantage when studying overseas where competition is fierce, and it is increasingly important as our local tourist industry and export business are fast developing. It improves understanding of one's own language and literacy as well as develops a large number of skills from the top 10 valued by employers such as lateral thinking, attention to detail, thinking outside the box, experimenting and taking risks, and flexibility. Language learning also gives students a better understanding of other cultures and a broader worldview, as well as a stronger awareness of their own identity and culture. Finally, as New Zealand is becoming increasingly diverse due to the growing numbers of foreign students, immigrants and tourists, our young people will be better equipped to develop positive relationships within New Zealand as well as overseas. Our children are living in a global village and need to be equipped to be successful in it. Sabine de Crevoisier French Teacher

HEALTHY EATING & LIFESTYLE POLICY

The rationale for the current Spotswood College Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Policy is:- "An active lifestyle and healthy eating are essential for people to achieve their full academic and physical potential. Daily physical activity and healthy eating habits that are established early in a person's life improve their well being/Hauora and may limit lifestyle diseases in older age. Spotswood College recognizes its responsibility in this area and will actively help its community establish and maintain these good practices". The school community will do its best to model this policy at all times. Any catering and fund-raising that is conducted under Spotswood College's name will comply with this policy. We wish to remind staff, students, Parents and Caregivers that chocolate sales are not permitted for fund-raising activities. D. Shaw - Acting Principal P. Gayton - Chairman: Health & Safety committee.

'TALK IS CHEAP' 104.4 FM

Sam Raumati and Jacques McCallum-Lind host the Spotswood College Radio Show ‘Talk Is Cheap’ every Tuesday at 4.30pm and it is re-broadcast, due to its popularity, on Friday. Jacques and Sam are also known as their radio personas: ‘The Man’ and ‘The Rock Goddess’. They are both Year 12 students with a passion for music which also shows in the work they do in the school's recording studio.

STAR

Every Thursday morning during Term 3, nine students attend a STAR Barista Course at WITT. Tutor, Tane Morgan teaches the students theory units and how to operate a coffee machine to make cappuccino, latte, mocaccino, flat white, hot chocolate as well as how to be creative in coffee art. If I were to sum up the Barista course, it's pretty much like a coffee club. A group of students from different schools come together, then spend about 2 hours making and drinking different coffees, many I didn't even know about. As well as this it's been a great opportunity to experience what making coffee is about. Mostyn Lee

There are so many things to get right if you want to make a good cup of coffee; Fresh beans, correct grind setting, having a clean machine, stretching the milk. You think it is easy but it is actually a scientific process! We are looking forward to making Iced Coffees in our last lesson. Our Tutor Tane Morgan is great and we are enjoying this opportunity.
