WELCOME QUILTERS!!

Thank you sew much for attending our OVQG Gathering of the Guilds!!

Quilters are such special people . . . When friends fall apart . . . we stitch them up;

When our children are sad . . . we wrap them in comfort; When our spouses are bored . . . we bring them to our favorite happy

places (fabric stores!) Where quilters meet . . . there is community, friendship and open arms;

When quilters meet . . . there are no such people as “strangers”.

Written by: Sharon Planche-Williams OVQG, Vice-President &

The Gathering - Steering Committee Chair

QUILTING TIPS & TRICKS

1. Best Way to Clean Your Cutting Mat Fill your bathtub with room temperature water (not hot, not warm, and not cold). In the water add 1/4 cup of white vinegar and a squirt of dove dish soap for a good lather. Use a mushroom brush (soft bristle brush) and scrub the mat gently getting a good lather with the soap. Then rinse your self healing mat with cool water getting all residue off the mat. You can dry it with a cotton towel, or air dry. Do not dry it in direct sunlight or it could damage the mat. This method makes your self healing mat absorb the water/soap mixture which helps make the mat supple again. Not only does this make your mat last longer, but it keeps your blades from dulling so quickly because you are cutting into a softer surface.

2. Best Way to Organize Your Stash Probably the most common way our stashes look is top shelf on the left side – be honest! But you want your stash clearly visible & organized like the rest of the fabric on the shelves.

The solution – Comic Book Backer Boards!!! You can buy these from comic book stores, usually in packs of 100 and fairly inexpensive. Check out this website for folding various fabric sizes. http://angelapingel.com/2011/02/fabric-folding-tutorial.html

3. Use the proper foot for the job Many of us have more than 1 sewing machine BUT NOT ALL ¼“ feet are the same. A 1/4'” foot from a Kenmore or Janome or Pfaff can be different by 1/16th” or 1/8th”. Likely not a big deal in a small wall quilt; however, when multiplying this difference over a bed size quilt, you could be out by several inches. So always sew a quilt with the same machine.

Page 6: ORCHARD VALLEY QUILTERS GUILD€¦ · Use Wooden Chopsticks for a stiletto You can get these for free from most Chinese food restaurants. The sticks can be sharpened in a pencil sharpener

6

OVQG – Gathering of the Guilds, April 13, 2019

4. Use the appropriate thread for the job The lower the number, the heavier the weight. A 50-weight should be used for piecing. A 40-weight thread should be used for quilting as it will be more visible and prominent in your sewing.

5. Use the appropriate needle for the job Use a 75/11 or 80/12 needle when piecing, but a 90/14 “top stitch” needle when quilting.

6. Clean Your Machine!!! Clean your machine every time you use up the thread in a bobbin. Every other time – give your machine a drop of oil in the raceway. This will keep your machine in great running order. Also . . . Don’t forget to lift the throat plate and clean away the fibre and dust accumulated underneath it!

7. Use Quilting Gloves When Quilting Wearing gloves while quilting helps you gain more control – even if you are just stitching in the ditch.

8. Use Wooden Chopsticks for a stiletto

You can get these for free from most Chinese food restaurants. The sticks can be sharpened in a pencil sharpener if they become dull or break – less expensive than a purple thing.

9. Best Way to Reduce Fabric Bulk

Spinning Intersections:

When sewing four-patch squares, the fabric can easily become bulky instead of laying flat. To remedy this, you can make a spinning intersection. Break the thread in the middle seam of the square and fold up. Press so that the seams are all rotating around the square in the same direction.

10. Best Way to Remove Thread After Seam Ripping:

Take a piece of packing tape and wrap it around your hand – sticky side out – and pat along the seam line. This removes the threads easily and it’s also great for use on clothing when you don’t have a clothes brush handy to remove threads or pet hair!

ARMSTRONG QUILTERS, ARMSTRONG B.C. Only four years old, we now have 22 members ranging from teen to 90 something. In our initial year as a guild, we welcomed a Syrian family to Armstrong with a quilt for every bed. AQ have donated to locals displaced by flooding and held a ‘sweat shop day’ sewing blocks for the CQA Ronald McDonald House initiative. We managed to pump out enough blocks for several quilts! Some were quilted locally with remaining blocks sent to CQA. It was a great idea and members enjoyed the ‘sweat shop’ experience. AQ held a successful quilt show in November 2017 and last year we had a show and sale at the art gallery. Our 2018 guild challenge was the Rip Drop Pass plan from a CQA magazine. The theme was Spring, and the exchange was made in a big circle so that no two participants ended up with the same seven fabrics. After an evening of dying and marking on fabric, the 2019 challenge has been issued to use the fabric and make a quilt by the end of the season. Results should be intriguing, as is our Show and Tell at each meeting! Quilting Here & There - Spring Workshops are now being planned. Susan Wilson

BARRIERE COMMUNITY QUILTERS, BARRIERE B.C. The Barriere Community Quilters meet every Thursday from September to the end of May at the food bank building in Barriere. We presently have fifteen members who get together to work on projects for ourselves and others. This past year we made baby quilts, mug rugs and Kleenex holders to sell at the Barriere’s no host bazaar as one of our smaller projects. Money from this event helps pay for our rental at the food bank and backing and batting for Community Quilts. We also joined in the making of quilt tops for Humboldt as well as making blocks for the Big Block Quilt Bee for Ronald McDonald houses across Canada. In the past few years we have made 38 small quilts for babies and children for the Anti-Violence Advocate Society in the Barriere and surrounding areas. We sometimes travel to Bridge Lake for a day with the Log Cabin Quilters to work on a project or take part in a class they have organized. In turn they have also been to our guild for similar days organized by our group. We have been invited to join them for such a day coming up in June this year. At Christmas this past year we treated ourselves to a turkey dinner at the Station House restaurant in Barriere. We try to keep a supply of comfort quilts made for needs that come up in our community. Our meetings are full of laughter and food, as well as support for each other. Marilyn Salle

COPPER VALLEY FAT QUARTERS QUILTERS, LOGAN LAKE B.C. Copper Valley Fat Quarters has been an active guild since the early 1990’s and we continue to grow almost every month. In the past year we have actively gathered Donation quilts and worked together on many quilts which have been distributed to Hospice houses, community groups, Seniors Care facilities, Women’s support groups and more. This Christmas, our president challenged us to make placemats and we created a total of 91 placemats which were gratefully received by Gillis House Care facility in Merritt B.C. This fall we had Dianne Jansson of Diversity Quilts in Pritchard B.C. visit us with her Modern Blocks From Traditional Designs workshop. We are still busy working on our ongoing monthly blocks. Last year our block of the month was Dianne’s Border Sampler. We created 20 plus splendidly different quilts all from the same pattern. Throughout the year, we have done mystery quilts, had pot luck dinners and monthly drop-in sew days. Our drop-in days have included Thread Play, Appliqué Emoji blocks, Quilts of Valour log cabin blocks, paper piecing and corded bags and were taught by volunteering guild members. It’s like a step back in time to the days of Quilting Circles and Quilt Bees.

DOUBLE “O” QUILTERS, OLIVER B.C. The Double O Quilters’ Guild is located in the Town of Oliver, British Columbia, just 25 minutes north of the Canada/United States border. Double O Quilters will be celebrating its 32nd anniversary in October 2019. The Guild holds its meetings, classes, and drop-in sessions in the Oliver Community Centre and meets from September to the following mid-May. Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to noon. A Demo is also part of the meeting, with a member showing the rest of the members how she made the item and handing out some notes. Classes are held on the 4th Monday of each month. Most are taught by a member, but the Guild has brought in out-of-town teachers with different experiences/ideas. From September to mid-May each Wednesday is drop-in day, where members can work on their own projects, chat over coffee or visit. Over the years there have been smaller groups set up doing a specific project; this year it is Winnie the Pooh and his friends. All members are welcome to join in these specific projects. Double O Quilters Guild has an e-mail address, and if any other guild members are in the Southern BC area, please do come and visit. E-mail address is: [email protected] Deborah Ham, Past Co-President Communications Chair for 2019

DUCK LAKE QUILTERS, DUCK LAKE B.C.

Twenty years ago, a group of ladies living in Holiday Park decided they wanted to learn to quilt so they hired a local teacher and the Park gave them the use of an old trailer and that was the beginning of Duck Lake Quilters. Since then management has supplied the use of a room where the quilters have cutting tables, rulers, cupboards for sewing machines, tables to sew on, and even a library. There is a fridge, microwave, water cooler and private washroom. Sewing times are Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and evenings. For the most part, members work on their own projects. Some members take time out to work on charity donations. Two examples are several wall quilts for the local senior’s facility and a cheque to KGH towards funding for the PET/CT scanner. ENDERBY CLIFF QUILTERS, ENDERBY BC The Enderby Cliff Quilters is a group of women celebrating their love of fabric. We meet the first and third Monday afternoons of every month except July and August. We meet at the senior's center in Enderby, where we have the use of a large storage cupboard for our projects. We have a lot of fabric donated to us by the community and we sew that fabric into useful Quilts to give away to needy families. Our membership fees go towards buying the batting and backing for the quilts. We have some very talented people in our group and take turns teaching each other our skills. We have had classes on basic piecing, paper piecing, quilt as you go, and stack and whack. We had a member teach a mystery quilt class where we used men's shirts to make our quilts and each one turned out so differently! We make one raffle quilt every other year and donate it to the Enderby and District Resource Center for fund-raising local projects. We have hosted 2 quilt shows at the Enderby Arts Festival held the end of July. each year. We are open to new members and visitors and extend a warm welcome to anyone to come and join us if you love fabric! Enclosed is a picture of our group, we are 12 -18 people and our numbers are growing! Bonnie Kantymir

MARIGOLD APPLIQUERS, KAMLOOPS, B.C. We are a group of about 30 members that meets once a month in Kamloops, B.C. Founded in 2001, as a Chapter of The Applique Society we promote all types of applique. Over the years we have sponsored workshops with well known Applique Artists which have been open to the quilting community. We are no longer a Chapter of TAS but continue to promote applique. Currently we have a yearly challenge quilt made by members which is drawn for at Christmas. The winner designs and organises the next quilt. We are now in our 4th year of that program. The picture attached was the first Christmas draw quilt. We are also in process of finishing an appliqued group quilt which we hope to enter in CQA- Edmonton next year. We occasionally have a block of the month, the last being a Jacobean design. In February of each year, we hold our special members Valentine’s Day luncheon and heart block draw. It is always a fun time. This past year we have extended our focus to include embroidery which will expand our ability to embellish! Membership has changed over the years, but we continue to be a vibrant group! Zoe Albert

ORCHARD VALLEY QUILTERS GUILD, KELOWNA B.C. The Orchard Valley Quilters Guild (OVQG) is centered in Kelowna, B.C. We currently boast 80 active members who meet every Tuesday, September through May (excluding December). The OVQG is a strong community member which is focused on ensuring that each infant discharged from the Kelowna General Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit goes home with a handmade quilt. Last year we donated 224 quilts to the KGH-NICU. Along with quilts to other worthy recipients, we also donate Christmas Stockings, placemats, table runners and SPCA beds for a total of 545 items. From October 1, 2018 to date we produced 307 items which have been distributed into the Kelowna community. These items are made, for the most part, with donated fabrics with the guild providing time, skills and batting. Donated fabric comes from fabric stashes within the community and from our member’s cupboards. Our guild has a robust program with groups participating in our Outreach Program (teaching high school students how to make NICU quilts), Art Quilting, Modern Quilting, Hand Quilting, Block-of-the-Month (BOM) and regular Tutorial sessions. Add into this program, 2 fun filled Pot Luck luncheons and there seems to be something for everyone.

OSOYOOS QUILTERS GUILD, OSOYOOS B.C. Currently, our Osoyoos Guild has a membership of 46 people. This membership includes 15 snowbirds. Being a warm winter destination, we are fortunate to have the Snowbirds join us from October until May depending on their stay in Osoyoos for our caring and sharing Tuesdays. Our guild meets every Tuesday from September until mid May. We have two meeting Tuesdays a month. After our meetings and for the other drop-in Tuesdays, we encourage members to stay and work on their own projects. We also have some demos or classes organized. Some Tuesdays are organized to work on group projects or charity quilts. Some of the recipients of our care quilts are the RCMP, Fire Department Victims, Country Squire Residents, Community Living, Kelowna NICU, Osoyoos Child Care, Roots of Empathy, SPCA Kitty Pillows, flood victims and other local needs as they arise. We organize a Quilt Show at our local Art Gallery every two years. It is fun to plan for the next show in 2021. Happy Quilting! Donna Chura

PENTICTON QUILTING GUILD, PENTICTON B.C. With our current membership of 74, we have a wide range of experience and abilities. The Guild meets twice a month from September to May on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. One is a meeting day and the other, our workshop day where we endeavor to provide an interesting and varied array of classes. This year we have dabbled in Free Motion Quilting, Woven Fabrics, a Quilted Hugs shawl, and most recently the trendy Jelly Roll Rug. In addition to our regular Guild program, we have a couple of satellite groups that meet to work on Art Quilts or Wool Applique. We have a very active Community Quilt program providing ideas and kits for members to finish or bind. Our Community quilts are delivered to many local organizations in need such as Victims Services, Senior Care homes, victims of fire and flood disasters including our local Penticton Meals on Wheels program which receives 75 - 90 new place mats every year for their program participants at Christmas time. Our Tri Annual Quilt shows are well known throughout the Quilting community and we work hard to make sure they are spectacular every time. Watch for us again in 2021. PINCUSHION QUILTING GUILD, PEACHLAND B.C. Peachland’s Pincushion Quilt Guild was started in 2005 by 6 ladies, who liked to sew. It began in one of their homes and in 2006 moved into the Old Peachland School House and became the official Guild. By 2007 they had already outgrown the school house and moved into the Peachland Community Centre. The Guild has 40 current members, with 4 of the original members still attending, and usually has a waiting list. Members come from as far as Okanagan Falls and Keremeos to Kelowna. There is open sewing every Wednesday, but also workshops, quilting weekends, trunk shows and other projects going on. We have a 2-day Quilt Show this year, and every 2nd year. The Guild is also a member of Peachland’s Arts Council. We have many talented members who give demonstrations and workshops. We also have a Fibre Art group which meets once a month.

The Guild is very active with community projects. This year more than 20 quilts have been donated to The Kelowna Women’s Shelter, as well as 55 pillowcases. Drapes were sewn for Peachland Community Centre; 2 Butterfly quilts were presented to Kelowna Hospice Centre. Small bats were made as a fundraiser for the BEEPS group at the Peachland Visitors Centre. Val Wojtula

OVQG – Gathering of the Guilds, April 13, 2019

RIVERVALLEY QUILTING GUILD, KAMLOOPS B.C. Rivervalley Quilters started over twenty years ago when the inaugural members were interested in forming a daytime quilting group. The evening guild which they left, encouraged them and gave them some financial support to get started. The Charter members wanted a guild without a lot of structure where they would mostly gather to do some sewing, a little visiting, share a few techniques, and have lunch together before they went home. Along with them, they brought the commitment to be the only guild to provide quilts for premature babies in the Neonatal Unit at Royal Inland Hospital. The Charter members determined that they would not be a traditional guild with a traditional executive. Therefore, they settled for only a Chair and a Treasurer. They also decided to limit their membership to 50 members. In September of 1998, the Rivervalley Quilters started meeting regularly at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Center on the first, the third and, if applicable, the fifth Monday of the month. Today, Rivervalley quilters continue in this tradition. Although we now have a membership of 61, our primary charity focus continues to be providing Preemie Quilts for the Neonatal Unit at Royal Inland Hospital. SAGEBRUSH QUILTERS, KAMLOOPS B.C. Sagebrush Quilters’ Guild in Kamloops has been together for almost 35 years. We meet twice monthly from September to June. Currently, we have 78 enthusiastic members, including four lifetime members. Our community focus continues to be making quilts for people receiving Chemotherapy at Royal Inland Hospital, and the annual number we donate yearly is approximately 250 quilts. When a person arrives for their first chemotherapy treatment, they are given the opportunity to choose their own quilt from a selection of lovely quilts. This quilt is theirs to take home and represents a warm hug and best wishes from our guild. Each month we receive heartfelt thank you cards from many of the recipients of our quilts. We have a variety of activities at our bi-weekly meetings: demonstrations of quilting techniques (done by our members), guest speakers, trunk shows, and evenings where we enjoy visiting and doing hand-work. This year we have a ‘Block Lotto’ challenge, and each month one or two lucky participants go home with enough blocks to complete a lap quilt. Learning new ideas and techniques at Spring and Fall workshops is always popular. Last November, we had Dianne Jansson teach an inspiring workshop on ‘Illusions and Perspective'. In April, we look forward to Jan Scruggs’ interesting workshop on ‘Scorched’ fabric and creating a cover for a journal. During the year, our members have many opportunities to get together and sew. There are usually twelve Saturdays during the year where members can gather to 'Quilt 'til U Wilt'. There are also weekly satellite daytime groups where members gather at different homes to chat and stitch. Our guild has 5-day quilting retreats twice a year at Sorrento Centre, where attendees have a wonderful time together and they even get some quilting done! Doffy Bourbonnais

We celebrated our ten-year anniversary with an invitational tea and quilt display. In past years our guild has displayed quilts during our local fall fair but last September we held a very successful two-day quilt show. We have an active program ever year with instructors coming from various communities as well as our guild. Some of our members also volunteer and display quilts during the Penticton Quilt Show and the Cherry Lane Quilts in the Park display. We are always looking for new instructors and new ideas. Along with full classes we offer quilt challenges each year as well as demonstrations. We like to meet new quilters so please feel free to drop in to any of our meetings for a coffee. We would love to have you. Our current President is Louise Noble, Secretary is Heather Cottrell, Treasurer is Linda Brussee, Vice President is Karen Jeffery and Membership is Val Coffey. The contact member for information regarding our guild is Cathy Paterson 250-494-8274. Louise Noble, President

THOMPSON VALLEY QUILTERS, CLEARWATER B.C. The Thompson Valley Quilters is a relatively small group with 4 to 7 ladies. We meet twice a month. We work on our own projects one week and the second week we work on a community project (care quilts and cancer quilts). We also try to have lessons to learn different techniques in quilting. This year we have worked on string quilting as a way to use up some of our scraps and will be showing some examples of our work.

VERNON SILVER STAR QUILTERS, VERNON B.C. VSSQ currently has over 180 members including 24 lifetime members. In the past year, we had to relocate and finding a suitable location for such a large guild with many assets was a challenge. However, we are settled in at our new location Grace Bible Chapel on Silver Star Road. With such a large membership it is nice to have several smaller groups meeting throughout the month to share in similar interests. These groups include Stars, Scrappy, Classics, QuArtz, and Modern as well as our ongoing workshops and community care sewing days. In the past year, our Community Care work has resulted in a total of 92 quilts donated locally and 22 on hand for distribution. We are currently in the final stages of planning for our Tenth Quilt Show to be held Sept. 27 and 28, 2019 at the Vernon Recreation Centre. As a legacy of our tri-annual quilt show, we set aside some funds to bring in a noted teacher to share her knowledge and give a trunk show to the members. This allows for all members, as well as those who opt to take the offered workshop to reap the rewards of our quilt show. Susan Wilson
