Responsible Conduct of Research Seminar Helps Researchers Think About Authorship Issues

The topic of authorship of scientific papers is a complex and sometimes challenging issue for researchers at all levels of seniority. To help shed some light on this issue, the Office for Research Career Development recently hosted speaker Kevin Strange, PhD, of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, in a seminar titled, “Authorship: Why Not Just Toss a Coin?” Approximately 90 members

of the MGH research community attended this session of our Responsible Conduct of Research Series, on May 13th. Dr. Strange covered the topics of: benefits and responsibilities of authorship; tactics of authorship abuse; authorship policies and requirements; examples of authorship disputes; and how to avoid problems. Each year, the ORCD invites MGH Postdocs to display their research, and a faculty review committee presents awards to the best posters. Come meet your colleagues and find out what’s happening in other labs across the hospital.

One of the most interesting and interactive parts of the seminar was the presentation of a series of “case studies,” based on actual cases of authorship disputes. For example: “A postdoc in Prof A’s lab carried out a series of studies. Some of the data are used in a manuscript for which the postdoc declines co-authorship. The other data are published without the postdoc’s knowledge and without acknowledging her contribution. Is there a problem? If so, who should be held account-able? If there is a problem, how can it be corrected?” In this case,

“Authorship: Why Not Just Toss a Coin?” (cont. from pg. 1)

the consensus of the MGH audience, and the journal editors in the real case, was that the postdoc deserved authorship; a correction was made in the journal. Slides from this talk, including more case

studies and additional details on the guidelines of authorship, are available on the ORCD web site. For further reading on this topic, see: Amer. J. Physiology: Cell Physiology 295: C567-C575, 2008 .

Career Exploration Opportunity for MGH Research Fellows The ORCD and MGPA are collaborating with the Massachusetts Biotech Council (MBC) to develop a pilot program that will allow MGH Postdocs to explore career options in local industry. Details of this program will be forthcoming, but interested postdocs should note that we will draw the pilot group of participants from those postdocs who attend the ORCD’s “Intellectual Property” Seminar being offered on June 16th. See page 3 for details on this seminar.

Tips from the ORCD Grant Writing Workshop! Background & Significance

• The most common mistake is to forget Significance,

or to just tack it on at the end of this section • What effect will your studies have on the concepts,

methods, technologies, treatments, services or preventative interventions that drive your field?

• Remember that – o NIH doesn’t fund science o NIH funds health research o How will your grant benefit the tax payer?
