Welcome to the Orange Regional Conservatorium’s 2020 Program.

In line with our organisational purpose to enhance the cultural life of our region by providing quality musical education, experiences and performance, you’ll find concerts that will do just that!

As the world celebrates 250 years since the birth of Beethoven, many of our concerts this year will reflect his musical legacy, the pinnacle performance being his signature piece, the 9th Symphony performed by the Kiazma Duo and local choirs.

Lior, one of Australia’s foremost singer-songwriters will return, our long held dream to host the Australian Doctors Orchestra in Orange will become a reality in 2020, we welcome Acacia Quartet as quartet in residence, we’ll partner with the new Orange Music Festival to add another dimension to music in our region, we’ll rejoice in 30 years of the Orange Youth Orchestra, and host epic concerts by our professional staff, students and our thirty plus ensembles.

Enjoy!

Donna RilesDirector

I am very excited as I write this welcome to the Program of performances for 2020.

2019 was full of wonderful musical experiences and the Farewell Proms concert was an example of that: hard work, talented students and teachers, quality performances. Orange Regional Conservatorium plays an amazing role in our community.

As good as this sounds, we need to maintain our standard and progress our aim of being the best regional conservatorium in Australia.

To do this we need the support of our community and in particular, you. Please ask yourself how you can help. Become a financial member of the Conservatorium, attend the AGM in April and think about joining the Board.

My sincere thanks to Director, Donna Riles, staff, students, families, participants and volunteers who make the Conservatorium so successful and fun to be involved with. I wish all of them the very best for the coming year.

Bring it on!

ACACIA QUARTET Orange Regional Conservatorium’s Ensemble in Residence In nine years Acacia Quartet have won great respect for their versatile and inventive programs.

Acacia have recorded nine albums, with ‘Blue Silence’ earning a nomination for an APRA-AMCOS Art Music ‘Award for Excellence’.

Acacia are passionate about supporting Australian composers, working with young musicians, and sharing their love of music with audiences of all ages. Their performances feature regularly on radio stations around the world.

Acacia’s engagements in Australia include the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall Sydney, Melbourne Recital Hall, as well as extensive touring through regional NSW and Victoria.

Through Nature to Eternity Singer/songwriter, Lior is renowned for his beautiful voice and lyrics that radiate truth and sincerity, and as the world searches for compassion and understanding, the importance of music as a means of communication cannot be undervalued.

In this musical narrative of love, loss and compassion, Tinalley and Lior perform a new song cycle by Melbourne composer, Ade Vincent. Three of Dvorak’s rousing love songs from his collection of Cypresses; echoes of love cherished, tormented and forgotten, are paired with Barber’s haunting ‘Adagio’ from his String Quartet Opus 11 and Lior’s achingly haunting ‘My Grandfather’. In a final quest for peace, Lior and Nigel Westlake reimagine Sim Shalom (Grant Peace) from ‘Compassion’, merging the symphonic world with that of the string quartet.

CARIBE Havana Return, por favorThrough a lens both retrospective and current, Caribe’s ‘Havana Return, por favor’ shares recollections of a first-generation Cuban migrant returning home after many years in Australia. This striking and varied stage production with its steamy Caribbean rhythms will transport the audience straight to the heart of Cuba.Cuban dancer Adrian Medina exudes elegance, exoticism and Cubanissimo against a backdrop of archival footage from 70s and 80s Cuba accompanied by an 8-piece band. The culmination of this blend of skills is a unique stage performance, making the show a memorable experience. As Master of Ceremonies, Medina keeps up a narrative between the musical numbers, filling in the historical background with juicy anecdotes and humour.

AUSTRALIAN ROMANTIC & CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA

The SouvenirAustralian Romantic & Classical Orchestra is a world-class orchestra of leading Australian musicians who are dedicated to the performance of Classical and Romantic orchestral and chamber music repertoire in historically informed style on period instruments.

Tchaikovsky’s impressions of visiting Italy in the late 1800s were so profound that he composed one of the main themes of Souvenir de Florence while there. The Souvenir is a program of references and influences, and continues the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s cycle of showcasing world-class soloists performing Mozart Concerti. This year’s featured artist is a regular guest – natural horn specialist Anneke Scott from London. She performs Mozart’s Horn Concerto No.3, a work that transports the instrument from its hunting-horn past into the modern age.

Gypsy Swing, Ragtime & Hot JazzDown a dusty road from the 1930s comes Doctor Stovepipe, a rollicking, old-time ensemble of guitar, bass, fiddle and sweet vocal harmonies. Each appointment is a swinging dose of fun, and a demonstration of how songs evolve and change over time, as they are passed on from one musician to the next. Students learn how the simplest sounds and stories can be turned into toe-tapping tunes and can even write their own lyrics for Doctor Stovepipe to perform in the show.

Every Child Can Be An InventorRoberta, a talented girl living in 16th century Italy, dreams of becoming an apprentice to the greatest inventor of all, Leonardo da Vinci. Along the way, she meets a trio of musicians equipped with the weird and wonderful instruments of their time. With jazz-infused music by Australian composer Sally Greenaway and script by writers Catherine Prosser and Paul Bissett, Da Vinci’s Apprentice encourages students to hear the music in the world around them, and inspires them to make their dreams a reality.

MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOOLS

2020 ORCCHAMBER MUSIC SERIES

Combining our love of education and performance. In 2019, our annual Chamber Music Series tried something a little different. In the lead up to each concert the musicians visited local schools to demonstrate their instruments, perform selections of works and inspire young minds. After such a successful trial run we are pleased to offer this program again in 2020.

The professional musicians and teachers of the ORC are our greatest asset and invariably this series showcases just how talented and diverse they are. As always, there will be music from the greatest composers of all time, challenging modern works and original compositions.

Join us for these relaxed Friday evening concerts, the perfect way to wind down the week.

The Beginning of Something BigThe Orange Chamber Music Festival (OCMF) is an art music festival crafted by classical musicians from diverse chamber music backgrounds. Based in Orange, and with extensive national and international experience, these artists have created a new platform for chamber music performance, adding to the already diverse and vibrant cultural scene of Orange.

The Inaugural OCMF will feature two of its own resident and loved ensembles, Acacia Quartet and Nexas Quartet, as well as two highly regarded international artists Niels Bijl (NL) – saxophone, and Emily Granger (USA) – harp.

New Works, Old MasterpiecesThe OSO will start the year off with a concert featuring 2 new compositions. The first has been composed by local Noel Annett, music teacher at Orange Anglican Grammar School, entitled Sketches of Notre Dame. The second composer is a young Spaniard by the name of David Centenera Morate. His work, The Reflexion of the Red Moon is a work for piano, flute and orchestra and David will be travelling from Spain with his family to perform the piano part, alongside David Shaw performing the flute solo. The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, Pastorale which will celebrate Beethoven’s 250 year anniversary of his birth.

TUITION ENSEMBLESLearning a musical instrument is one of life’s most rewarding pursuits and has proven academic and social benefits. Our goal is to engage with, and find a place for, every member of the community no matter of age, background or skill level.

The Orange Regional Conservatorium is your community music resource with a commitment to Inspire - Create - Enjoy.

The ORC employs over thirty professional musicians, educators and conductors drawing on a wealth of experience from across Australia and the world.

Hundreds of community members take part in our ensembles and choirs each week. We offer over thirty different groups for all ages and skill levels. From our beginner Sing & String class for toddlers right through to the Come Together Choir that has over 100 members stretching well` into their 80’s, all led by some of Australia’s finest conductors and band directors.

Rehearsing and performing in a group is not only a vital part of music education but also a fun and enjoyable social experience. Each day our we are delighted to see students from different schools making new friends, people of diverse backgrounds coming together and new residents finding a community to be a part of.

Our staff provide the highest quality and most diverse music education in regional NSW, resulting each year in our senior school students gaining entry to Australia’s top tertiary music institutions.

The ORC offers individual tuition in almost every instrument across our brass, guitar, keyboard, percussion, string, voice and woodwind departments. Along with ever expanding Early Childhood Music and Musicianship programs.

In 2020 we are excited to expanding our ensembles program even further with three new Brass groups. Victoria Chatterley and Philip Rees OAM will be directing a Junior Brass Ensemble, Senior Brass Ensemble and pBuzz, a class for beginners who will learn on instruments specially designed for young learners.

One of our most exciting growth areas is participation by adults in our many vocal or instrumental adult ensembles. Make inquiries about joining one today.

THE NEW BUILDINGWe have been dreaming of a purpose built music education and performance facility since the very beginning. Now that time has come!

After securing $10 million of federal infrastructure funding, Orange City Council are now in the process of applying for the remaining amount needed to fully fund this project. With construction expected to begin within the next couple of years, it is a very exciting time for the Orange Regional Conservatorium.

This new building will be a combined Arts, Education and Science faculty, comprised of a Conservatorium, Recital Hall and Planetarium.

In 2020 our goal is to build public awareness and support for this one-of-a-

kind project and demonstrate the urgent need for a new building as we continue to grow beyond our current means.

The new building will feature:• A 250 Seat Recital Hall• 40 Teaching Studios• 5 Dedicated Rehearsal Spaces• Early Childhood Music Room• Musicianship Classroom• Music Library• Administrative Spaces and Offices• Dedicated Instrument Storage• Dedicated Green Rooms and

Backstage Facilities• An 80 seat Planetarium and science

education facility

ACACIA QUARTETENSEMBLE IN RESIDENCE

In 2018 we invited Acacia Quartet to perform as part of our visiting artist program and work with the Orange Youth Orchestra. Violinist Lisa Stewart and Violist Stefan Duwe enjoyed their time in Orange so much that the following year they decided to make it their home.

We were thrilled when Lisa and Stefan expressed an interest in working with the ORC in a teaching and mentoring capacity . They soon became two of our most enthusiastic staff members, immersing themselves in the community as teachers, performers and friends.

This led to the idea of formalising our relationship with the Quartet as Ensemble in Residence. Ahead this will see Acacia use the ORC as a place to rehearse, prepare

programs and more. In return students and staff can attend open rehearsals and members of the Quartet will mentor some of our students and ensembles.

We are honored that Acacia Quartet have chosen to make the ORC their home and we look forward to future collaborations with much excitement.

PHILANTHROPY SUPPORT USThe Orange Regional Conservatorium is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on, in no small part, the generous support of philanthropic individuals and organisations.

These contributions help to support educational programs, workshops, masterclasses, performances, purchasing and maintenance of musical instruments and much more.

As we look toward the construction of the new Conservatorium building, the need for philanthropy will increase in order to outfit this state of the art facility with items such as a Concert Grand Piano, equipment for each studio, works of art to hang on the walls and much more. There will be a suite of sponsorship and giving programs offered in return for naming rights, brand recognition and more.

MembershipBecoming a financial member is one of the easiest ways to support and be a part of the ORC community. Membership lets you vote at the Annual General Meeting, join the ORC Board of Members if nominated, and includes discounts on concert tickets and more. To become a valued member, please visit www.orangecon.org.au. Standard membership: $55/single and $95/double.

VolunteerOur volunteers are a like-minded group of individuals who make so much of what we do, possible. They collect tickets at concerts, help organise our library, stage manage and so much more. We are always looking for new friends to join our list of volunteers. For more information please contact ORC Admin.

The ORC would like to recognise the generosity of the community for their kind donations.
