Ed.) by Terrell, Andrade, Egasse, Muñoz. !Hola! The main focus of Spanish 180 is on listening and speaking with reading and writing as supporting skills. Content areas include: expressions relating to daily life, environment, routine activities, and descriptions of people and places. Vocabulary will include simple greetings, leave takings, courtesy expressions, family members, numbers, time, dates, weather, colors, and basic objects in the immediate environment. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and produce simple sentences dealing with schedules, addresses, telephone numbers, weather reports, short information articles, signs, and postcards. You will also learn about various aspects of Hispanic cultures. The course and the text are based on the Natural Approach to foreign language acquisition. That is, you will be acquiring language in the classroom, as opposed to learning it, much like a child acquires a first language. Emphasis will be on acquisition and not on learning. EXAMS We will cover Pasos A-C and Capítulo 1-Capítulo 5. There will be 3 (three) exams, a final exam, and an oral exam. Yay! The lowest exam score will be dropped and, therefore, will not count. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Exams will be graded on a Curve. Yay. You’re welcome. However, the curve for the last exam will be an average of the previous two exams (since often many students don’t take the last exam.) If you miss an exam, that’s the exam you get to drop. Please do not ask if you can make up an exam. If you miss an exam, you get to drop that one. The final will be cumulative (from Paso A–Capitolo 5) and will be administered during the last day of class. The final exam cannot be dropped! The final exam will also be worth 100 points.

IV. Written Assignments

• Many of the written assignments from the online workbook will be assigned as outside “written” homework since most students will never go back and see their corrections.

• They will be unassigned from Centro and assigned as homework and graded. • Each written hard-copy assignment will be worth 10 points. • Don’t use “Google translator” to do your assignment, I’ll be able to tell and you’ll lose points if it

doesn’t sound right. Better to have your Mom’s boyfriend’s Mexican nephew help you with it instead.

• Written assignments will be graded thoroughly. Spelling mistakes = -1; grammar mistakes = -2 points. Any English (besides Walmart, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Orange Coast College, etc) = -1 point.

• Students can get 1 point extra credit if they type AND spell check their written assignments perfectly. Yay. Click here to learn how to spell check in Spanish http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/2012%20Fall%20how%20to%20spell%20check.docx

If you did it in a blue pen, use a red pen for the corrections. If you did it with a pencil, use a blue pen, etc. Homework turned in without corrections done in a different color will not be accepted. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Students will not be allowed to do late homework during class time and turn it in on the same day for full credit. OTHER ASSIGNMENTS Spanish Dictionary

• Your Spanish dictionary will be your first 10 point assignment due the second week of class Wed, September 5.

• I recommend buying a good Spanish dictionary and spending about $5.00-$10.00 ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION:

• Attendance is extremely important. • You are allowed 2 “Almost Free” absences • Beginning with the third absence, you lose 10 pts. of a 100 point attendance and participation grade. • Students who leave early will lose ½ an absence. • 3 tardies equals one absence • There is no such thing as an excused absence. An absence is an absence.

Almost free absences

• To get those points back, you may (1) attend a museum (preferably MOLA in Long Beach) or (2) watch a Spanish movie.

• You cannot do 2 of each. You must do one or the other or both. • After you watch the movie or go to the museum, you’ll need to fill out the required attendance or

movie summary slips. • Attendance and movie summary slips can be turned on any exam day. • Here are the links for the movie summary slip

http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/Movie%20worksheet.pdf • Museum summary slips

http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/Museum%20Visit%20Worksheet.pdf • The best Spanish director is Pedro Almódovar.

English in the classroom

• During class, English is not permitted, except for the last 10 minutes of class. Students who speak English will lose 1 pt towards their Attendance and Participation grade.
