Oracle Grid Infrastructure
ASM and Oracle Clusterware are
installed into a single home directory
called Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g
Release 2.
This directory is referred to as the Grid
Infrastructure home.
What Is a Cluster? A group of independent, but interconnected,
computers that act as a single system
Usually deployed to increase availability and
performance or to balance a dynamically

which also includes Automatic Storage Management (ASM)
and the ASM Cluster File System (ACFS).
Oracle Clusterware Networking
Grid Plug and Play
With past releases, adding or removing
servers in a cluster required extensive
manual preparation. With the release of
Oracle Database 11g Release 2, Grid Plug

installing, configuring, and managing
server nodes by using a Grid Naming
Service within the cluster .
Single Client Access Name
The single client access name (SCAN) is theaddress used by clients connecting to the

In essence, Oracle Automatic Storage
Management (ASM) is a volume manager and file
system built into the Oracle Database server
