50 Years Of Proud Service

C an you imagine Guilderton without the Country Club? The Visitors Centre? Or the Library? The GCA was the catalyst behind

these, and many, many more community initiatives.

In fact it started as the Guilderton Progress Association in 1960. By 1964 it had got the old hall - now demolished - financed and built. It also had a First Aid room built, equipped and maintained for many years - sadly no more. By 1970 the GPA’s agitation had seen both telephone service and water supply established in the town. The GPA set up the Country Club as a separate organization in 1972, so as to keep the liquor license in the town under community control.

As a small town represented by a large local government, Guilderton has always needed a persistent and independent voice. It was the GCA’s persistence that saw the town streets bituminized and, later, some foot paths constructed. It lobbied to get the access road bituminized. It conducted the surveys needed to get the SEC to provide power to the town. We take for granted today so much that our community predecessors struggled for.

Nor has the GCA rested on its laurels. More Recent Accomplishments include: *The Establishment of the Lower Moore River Working Group. *Setting up the Friends of the Moore River Estuary to protect the Estuary from destructive development. *Leading the campaign for River Safety which resulted in the Department of Transport’s recent effective steps to control boat behavior. *Continuing Local Government Advocacy:

The GCA is the ‘go to’ body for the Gingin Shire on issues relating to Guilderton. The GCA has input into shire budget decisions and is said by the council to “punch well above its weight”. The People behind the Place Promotion of Appropriate Development: The GCA actively supports developments that will enhance our town and preserve its natural environment, whilst strongly opposing those developments that will not. The GCA has been a key player in the opposition to the south of river housing development.

Community Engagement: In response to community concern regarding the annual ‘schoolies’ influx, the GCA host regular barbeques which bring school leavers, residents and police together.

GCA Members: The GCA is a member driven organization. Our members are a diverse mixture of local residents, weekenders and regular vacationers. All GCA activities are carried out by dedicated volunteers.

We continue to need the high rate of volunteer participation and consistent membership renewal which express the commitment our members have towards the GCA’s work and its ongoing value.

So Join us and Get Involved

When you get involved, you will be informed and have a say on what happens in your community. That ‘Moore River magic’ does not just happen – it takes the combined effort of dedicated community members.

For more information on the GCA please talk to a committee member, visit our website at www.gca.asn.au or email [email protected]

T he Guilderton Visitor Centre promotes the WHOLE of the Shire of Gingin inviting visitors to

explore the area and enjoy their stay. Maps and information are given that cover the River (environment, boating, fishing etc), four-wheel driving and other enjoyable activities in the local and

wider area. This is achieved by a small but dedicated group of volunteers who encourage visitors to enjoy a safe visit, and to return.

If you enjoy the Moore River and would like to share with visitors the Moore River and Indian Ocean beaches, the flora, fauna and general positive ambience, do please come and help us. We need more volunteers! It's just a most enjoyable roughly three hours, perhaps every other month or so. Obviously if you are unable to attend a scheduled duty this matter may be easily resolved by phone.

Please join us and our volunteers at morning tea and discover what it means to be a GCV Volunteer on Monday 24th September 2012 at 10.30 in the Cafe Amoore. RSVP (Please) to:- Sylvia: Phone 95771366, or email [email protected] Zoe: Phone 93051131/95771651, or email [email protected]

PORTUGUESE MILLIPEDES

W e at Guilderton have certainly experienced infestations of these millipedes within the Guilderton Community Hall and surrounds,

and presumably within the Guilderton Country Club too. They have been found in a number of residences in Guilderton and appear to be increasing in number. My understanding is that they originally "jumped ship" in South Australia some years ago, have now arrived in WA "on foot", being first noticed in Rolystone and now becoming increasingly noticeable elsewhere. I don't know if some Shire-wide effort may be appropriate, but at least the following web pages may be useful to some.

The following web sites were kindly provided by Ashley Rob NACC:

http://www.mantispestcontrol.com.au/millipede-control-perth

http://www.millipedecatchers.com/

http://www.howtoaustralia.com.au/pest_control/a_guide_to_managing_black_portuguese_millipedes/

The first is a local company which advertises some expertise in the area, the second sells devices designed to catch/kill, the third sets out more general principles. If we regard the millipedes a sufficient nuisance to require control, then we as the GCA would need to initiate appropriate action. This subject will be an agenda item for the August 2012 Committee meeting.

An example of preventative measures:

Lighting Portuguese millipedes are attracted to light. If you are able to do so, turn off any external lights which are close to your house or other buildings and minimise any escape of light by closing curtains and blinds. Use weather-strips on doors as good door seals will also help prevent entry into the home.

Compost/Mulch While compost is good for gardens, it also allows higher populations of millipedes to breed. If you can, reduce the area covered by organic matter such as compost, leaf litter and mulch as it decreases a source of food and shelter. Don’t forget your gutters.

Fire Brigade Report

R ecently there was a report about the Margaret River Fires where 40

houses were burnt down last year.

Fire-fighters trying to put fires out around houses encountered many problems, including finding firewood stacked close to homes. Remember at the end of winter to stack your wood away from the house.

Fire-fighters had trouble with firebreaks that were used as BMX tacks.

Fire-fighters have asked for woodchip to be banned as a groundcover in that area; maybe we should think twice about using it so freely.

We know our own fire-fighters who went down to help had trouble getting into properties that had locked or electronic gates. Can a big fire truck turn round in your drive? They will not enter if they would be putting themselves into danger.

Branches overhanging houses or verandas or worse over firebreaks making it impossible to defend properties.

The fire-fighters down there are asking their Shire to have a compliance officer and tougher penalties for people who continue to ignore that their property is in a dangerous condition.

It’s time for you in this area to self mitigate and make sure that now, in the cooler months, you prepare your property for the next fire season.

There is lots of advice on the internet and your local Fire Control Officer and or Brigade Captains are all willing to make a home visit. All phone numbers are available in the local telephone directory or at the Shire.

Now is the time to burn those grass trees that have grown a large skirt again. Wait until it is raining, put on the rain coat and go light them up. This action takes a lot of fuel off your property.

A big “Thank you” to all the residents who are diligently going about cleaning up and making their block “Fire Safe”. It is great to see spirals of smoke as people are working to achieve their own safety.

Having watched in horror the tragedy of the Margaret River/Augusta fire last season, we want to make sure our community never suffers that fate. Please do clean up your area, if needed contact the Volunteer Fire Brigade to do a controlled burn through your property.

Be a good neighbour and help out where necessary, we have a lot of “getting older” people in our community who would be delighted to be offered assistance.

Also if you are in contact with non-residential block or house owners, please pass on this very important message.

Lastly make sure your home and contents insurance is up to date with today’s prices.

From the Moore River News team..

R ecent printing cost increases has caused the team to reassess finances. As a result, we have been forced to increase

our front page sponsorship to $140 for half page and $260 for full page as from the beginning of 2013 (February issue). This decision has not been made lightly, but as we are experiencing a shortfall of nearly $200 per issue, it has proved essential. While we receive support from the Shire by way of a donation each year, we also rely on other donations to keep us afloat. We would like to put a request out to anyone who will be donating items to this year’s Spring Fair Auction to dedicate the funds to the Moore River News. We’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the Crafty Patch ladies for their donation of $223 from their recent Christmas in July raffle. Thank you ladies, not only for the money, but also for your support. Thank you, also, to the thoughtful, anonymous person who left $10 in the post box for us; all donations are gratefully accepted.

Volunteers’ “Thank You” BBQ

G ingin Shire President, Mike Aspinall, recently sent invites to all emergency response volunteers in the Shire of Gingin to join him for a sausage sizzle in Seabird.

Ambulances and Fire Trucks lined up on the oval and the volunteers enjoyed a lunch with drinks. It was good to catch up with so many old friends and colleagues.

5 and 10 year medals were given out to Guilderton and Gingin West Fire Brigade members.

The new CEO of the Shire was present and we all had a lovely day. Anne Stroud

Computer Group Report The Woodridge hall was busy with clicking mouses and lots of helpful conversation last month at the Lower Coastal Computer session. We had visitors from Seabird, Redfield Park, Sovereign Hill and Woodridge. Everyone heard a presentation about what Skype can do to lower your phone bills and have more fun with family and friends. Following on from last month, one lady had bought an external hard drive and a home visit was made to help her set it up. We then fortunately had some more people who know a little, help people who know less, with their own individual project or problems. Please remember it is NOT a club, there is no joining fee, and you do not have to come every month. For just $4 all you need to do is to turn up and either help out or come to learn. Our aim is to make sure every person attending goes home with a little more confidence to do what they want to do on their own computer. Don’t worry if you do not have a laptop, you can listen and observe. Thursday September 6th @ 9am (helpful to turn up at 8.50 to set up). We will have a presentation on pictures, (cameras, scanning old photos, filing pictures in My Pictures and having them scroll on your desktop).

Neergabby News

W e have all been working hard to get the grounds looking beautiful and it is working. Repairs have been made to the big gazebo

but there are more to come.

A private function was held there on Saturday night and there were so many positive comments about ‘the perfect place’, ‘the perfect setting’, so why not consider having your next party at the grounds? Your family and friends will welcome the difference an outdoor venue can bring; the kids will have a ball. No problems with noise and parking. This is also a great place for a child’s birthday party.

Please contact the committee via the website for information: http://www.lccdwa.com/Associations/ncai/ncai.aspx

Our Fireworks night is coming up on the 29th September and we have raised the bar a little this year with our pyrotechnic display. This decision is based on the amazing support we get from the surrounding communities and we are looking forward to welcoming you all again. Put the date in your diary.

Don’t forget your membership, Neergabbians, and remember we are here for you and all of our meetings are open to the community.

Do You Ride a Motorbike?

A new Social Riding Group is being formed for the North West of Perth (Joondalup to Lancelin). The “Northern Knights” will not be

a formal club but will be for riders of any age and any bike. We will meet in the Two Rocks Tavern once a month as a get-together, to arrange rides, overnighters, camping/ cabins, join in rallies and charity rides etc. Don't ride alone, phone Dave on 9577 1498 or Paul on 9577 1555 to register your interest. The date for the first meeting is the 6th of Sept.

CRAFTY PATCH NEWS

W ell what a busy month we have had! Our first delight was a lovely letter of thanks from the Margaret River/Augusta Shire for the

blankets and quilts we sent to the Fire victims. They kindly sent some photos of the families receiving the quilts. The Ladies all enjoyed a very happy and fun-filled day celebrating Christmas in July with some delicious food supplied by themselves. A number of the 38 ladies brought an item to show what they had been working on this year. The question was “who is Jacob Marley”… A big thank you to all who participated and helped out on the day. A request came to the group to help make bags to distribute items to many needy children in Northern Australia and other parts of the world. The ladies rallied around and set to bringing their machines to sew while others spent the morning cutting out ready for the sewers. Well done ladies, a fine effort. If you are a lady wishing to meet a friendly lot…. Crafty or not… maybe wishing to learn a skill, please join us any Tuesday morning at the Woodridge hall. Tea or Coffee on tap as well as many lovely ladies willing to pass on their skills.

1st Gingin Scout Group hosts Operation Nighthawk

S aturday August 11th 2012 saw over 600 Scouts along with hundreds of leaders, parents, Venturers and Rovers descended on the Gingin

Racecourse area, home of the 1st Gingin Scout Group for Operation Nighthawk. Operation Nighthawk has been run in Queensland for over 26 years. It is an annual night orienteering, navigation event for Scouts aged 11 to 14 years of age. In 2008, Gingin hosted the first Nighthawk event to be held in WA with about 350 Scouts attending. It has since been to three other host towns, which are Pinjarra, Beverley and Boddington and is getting bigger every year.

Gingin 1st Scout Group would like to thank Simon Van Blitterswyk, Norm Wallace, Terry Green and Murray Hyne and their respective families for allowing bases to be erected on their private properties. Thanks also goes to Gingin Hire for distributing portable toilets to each base and to the Shire of Gingin for the loan of event signs and also for allowing a base on their land and for taking an interest in the event. Michael Mighall, who holds a ticket for traffic management, also deserves a commendation for erecting and taking down the event signs. We would also like to acknowledge the two equestrian groups who share the racecourse area with the Scout Group for tolerating an event this size.

The Expo Committee donated $3500 to the Scout Group to line and insulate the walls of the Scout Hall, which had been virtually a tin shed. Kelly Strahan acquired the paint for a great saving and has agreed to paint a Junglebook mural as a feature wall at the hall. Parents, leaders and Francis White all worked very hard before the event to get the hall looking great by sanding, filling and painting these interior walls. A community grant from the Shire of Gingin assisted with the purchase of new stainless steel benches and sinks for the kitchen and the Bendigo Bank assisted with a grant for a new large kitchen stove. All of these items were picked up in Perth by Murray Hyne, and the installation and fittings for them were donated by Eddy’s Plumbing & Gas. Thanks also goes to all of these people who made the group very proud of their facility for this special event.

T he Spring Fair Committee have

been busy getting ready for this year’s fair, hoping that it will be as good as

the past fairs. There are new rides for the kids, and we are calling on everybody who has a ride-on lawnmower for the lawn mower event. The scarecrows last year brought lots of laughs so we would like everybody to get involved this year and make one to bring down to the fair. Calling all community groups - don’t forget to book in early for your stalls. Bookings can be made with Nic 9577 1404. We are looking for auction items - if you have anything you might like to donate ring Maureen 0428 104 545.

A great time was had at the Christmas in July pot luck dinner that was held at the Woodridge Hall recently. Lots of

fun with the Secret Santa Raffle which was won by Kym Manning with the amount of $110 raised. We are looking at having a theme dinner every three months, so keep a look out for dates so you don’t miss out on a great time.
