Grades 1 - 8 SUMMER 2020 SUMMER READING & MATH ASSIGNMENTS

Since it’s very important for us to encourage our students to read and to appreciate literature, ALL students entering Grades 1 thru 8 are required to do “Summer Reading”. All reading books can be purchased online through BarnesandNoble.com or Amazon.com. Students must read the assigned books listed below during the summer and submit the Reading and Math Assignments the first week back to school.

In addition to our traditional Summer Reading practice, we are once again including a Summer Math Practice Book as part of the required work to be completed during the summer break. Our goal is to ensure our student’s transition into the next grade level is as smooth as possible. By keeping their math skills current, students not only refresh their abilities, but are better prepared for the upcoming grade when school commences. These Math Skills Practice Books will be distributed to students on June 3rd with their Report Cards.

SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT: (Select only ONE option) • OPTION ONE Assignment: Parts of a Story for “The Kissing Hand” Included: Worksheet for Beginning, Middle, and End. Students will cut clippings of certain parts of the story and have to glue them in the boxes they belong as well as in the order

they happen in the story. • OPTION TWO Assignment: Sequencing a Story for “If You Take a Mouse to School” Included: Worksheets (2) for sequencing the events in the story. Students will clip the squares/images from page 2 and arrange them on the diagram on page 1 in chronological order as they occur in the story. SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT: (Complete BOTH) • Assignment #1: Making Predictions What will happen next? Worksheet. Students will answer the prompted questions in complete sentences. Remember to start

your sentence with a capital letter and end your sentences with a punctuation mark. • Assignment #2: Sequencing a Story Included: Worksheets (2) for sequencing the events in the story. Students will clip the squares/images from page 2 and arrange them in order in the spaces marked on page 1 to retell the story in the order the events occurred.

Each paragraph must be 4 to 7 sentences long.
