Introducing the PMD sensor from ifm efectorA new price-to-performance benchmark
“Shelf occupied” detection
Backgroundsuppression andultrasonic sensorsare lower-costalternatives for distancemeasurement buthave shorterranges. Traditionaltime-of-flightsystems offer animproved level of performancebut are muchhigher in cost. The efector pmdsensor combinesthe advantages ofthese systems: a 10meter range at anaffordable price.

efector pmd sensor for distance measurement
The sensor’s 4-digit alphanumericdisplay precisely indicates the meas-ured distance. Models available withsimple teach function or parametersetup via pushbutton.

Developed for a broadrange of applications
Two efector pmd sensor models canprovide an analog signal (4...20 mA)that is proportional to the object-to-sensor distance. The analog output canbe scaled to fit a variety of applicationsincluding automated storage andretrieval systems.
Absolute distancemeasurement
The efector pmd sensor can operate as a background suppression sensor at distances up to 10 m. Using a laserlight source with a spot size of only 6 mm, the sensor accurately detectssmall objects – such as a nut on a cardoor panel.
Long range backgroundsuppression
To monitor the position of an objectin a continuous process, the sensorcan be programmed to provide twoseparate outputs that will activate atpreset distances. Typical application is web tension monitoring.

The efector pmd laser sensorfrom ifm efector is designed to measure distance based on the "time-of-flight" principle. Each transmitted photon requiresa certain period of time to travel to the target and back to the sensor. This time period is directly proportional to thedistance traveled.
Traditional time-of-flight sensors use a photodiode for a receiverelement with additional externalelectronics for signal acquisitionand processing. This type ofsensor design can be expensive, large in size, and not ideal forindustrial applications.
In comparison, the efector pmdsensor’s receiver element is aSystem-on-Chip design. Thecomplete sensor element andelectronics are integrated on a silicon chip called a PhotonicMixer Device (PMD).
This innovative design by ifmoffers the right balance ofperformance, size, and price forindustrial distance measurementapplications.
