Chapter 4 Optical Biotelemetry Koichi Shimizu ABSTRACT The usefulness of biotelemetry (remote measurement of biological information) has been recognized in clinical medicine and animal sciences. In biotelemetry, the radio wave has been commonly used as a transmission medium. To answer many new demands for biotelemetry and to overcome various problems of radio telemetry, a technological method called optical biotelemetry has been developed. Using light as a transmission medium, the bandwidth for signal transmission is gre atl y inc rea sed and man y EMI proble ms can be sol ve d. T echnic al con sidera tions re quir ed to real ize the opti ca l bi ot el emet ry were pr esented. On the de vi ces for opti - cal bio tel eme try , the wa ve len gth of lig ht, lig ht source s, lig ht det ect ing ele ments and the mea sures for opt ica l noi ses wer e dis cus sed. On dat a tra nsmiss ion, ana log ue and digital communication, modulation methods, intelligent transmission and multi- ple xin g met hods were dis cus sed. To deve lop an opt ica l biotel eme try tec hni que , we need to know the characteristics of light propagation. The optical characteristics of body surface tissue and the distribution of indirect light in a room were dis- cus sed for tra nsc uta neous tel eme try and ambulatory tel eme try usi ng ind ire ct light, respectively. Two techniques were proposed for multi-channel optical bioteleme- try. They were the applications of a pulse-burst method and the spread spectrum metho d. As concr ete examples of optic al biote lemet ry , some applicati ons of this me thod to pr ac ti ca l use are pr esente d.
