The first clinical implantation into a human of a fully implantable cardiac pacemaker was in 1958 at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden. Innovation depends on individuals. Since then the pacemaker has been implanted in more than 3.5 million people.

One thing many of you know about Sweden is the Nobel Prize, the world’s most prestigious award in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace, as well as economics. This is a picture of the Nobel literature laureate from 2012. Does anyone know who is on stage behind the Nobel laureate? It’s not the previous winners, which most people think. They are representatives of the academies which award the prizes, many of whom represent Swedish universities.

One of the reasons that Sweden ranks high in these indexes, is the fact that we have a strong focus on research and innovation. The Swedish government invest 3,3% of the GDP (2010) annually on R&D. This is on the same level as Japan (3,3%). Only one country in the world invests more (Israel 4,2%). Research revenue to universities increased by nearly 20% in real terms between 2008 and 2012. Sweden has for a many years had a strong relationship between universities and industry. Many of the Swedish global companies would not be where they are today, without this close cooperation. For example: Pharmacia and Uppsala University Ericsson and KTH Volvo and Gothenburg University+Chalmers SAAB Aerospace and Linköping University Sweden also has a strong system of agencies and research financers. For example, VINNOVA funds and support strong research and innovation centers at universities, like the Uppsala Berzelii Technology Center for Neurodiagnostics in the photo, dedicated to research on complex neurodegenerative diseases and sydromes such as ALS, Parkinson, Alzheimer and chronic pain.

One example of how universities in Sweden provide for international researchers comes from Lund in Southern Sweden. At the International Researchers & Scholars Office (IRSO) staff work strategically & operatively in cooperation with international coordinators at the departments. IRSO aims to support PhD students, post-docs, visiting scholars and families and offer general information on settling in Sweden and also assist the inviting departments. They provide: Checklists-before arrival, during stay, prior to departure Contacts with public authorities & private industries & relocation service Introduction day in English Scholarship holders support Evaluation form prior to departure from Sweden Information about insurances for incoming international personnel & scholarship holders

The home of the future MedMAX, the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund is a synchrotron x-ray light source that continue serving some 1000 users per year and delivering science in a broad range of fields including electronic structure of solids, gases, aerosols, and clusters, catalysis, environmental science, soft-matter and protein crystallography. After almost 30 years of successful operation and research the three rings at the old facility will be closed at the end of 2015 to open the door for the new MAX IV facility. Some 800 metres north of the new synchrotron x-ray facility MAX IV, construction have started for the European Spallation Source, a neutron spallation facility. The two world-leading facilities, placed close together and with not only Lund University in the neighbourhood by but also the Universities in Copenhagen will provide excellent tools for scientists in life and materials science. In between the two facilities Science Village Scandinavia is under construction, a joint venture between the Lund University, Lund municipality and the regional government Region Skåne. Its purpose – to facilitate world-leading life and materials science by providing linfrastructure for laboratories, offices, hotels, restaurants and shops. Photo: Perry Nordeng
