Fly ash, generated from thermal power stations is having enormous potential for gainful utilization as a valuable resource; in spite of this, it remains in the category of industrial waste till its potential is fully explored and put to correct use. Gone are the days, when it was treated as a waste and a pollutant, rather it

has now emerged, not only as a resource material but also as an environment protector.

As a pozzolanic material, use of fly ash in manufacturing of cement, part replacement of cement in concrete/mortar, complete replacement as river sand, manufacturing of bricks etc. saves generation of carbon dioxide, saves good quality lime and coal up to a distinguished level. Thus, Fly ash plays a vital role in conservation of mineral resource, reducing mining activity and degradation of environment. Other utilization of fly ash in construction of road embankment as replacement of soil, reclamation of low-lying areas and mine void filling etc. conserve top soil, precious river bed sand and river ecology.

Fly ash along with suitable additives, is used to stabilize the road subgrade in order to reduce plasticity, enhance strength, and improve workability of weak soils. Fly ash mixed with Soil and suitable additives can increase California Bearing Ratio (CBR).

Being a pit head power station, OPGC has various limitations for utilization of fly ash, still IB Thermal is continuously exploring new avenues for utilizing fly ash as resource material. With combined team effort, ash utilization in OPGC has picked up. OPGC is successfully dispatching fly ash to different Cement plants across the Country from its Silo, constructed for utilization of dry fly ash with state-of-the-art technology. OPGC is also using Fly ash in cement, mortar and concrete as a pozzolanic material, saving equal amount of Cement, which otherwise would have been used. Production of cement apart from being quite energy intensive also uses lime stone and coal. Thus, replacement of cement by fly ash would save corresponding volume of these natural resources, and reduce associated mining activity to corresponding extent, resulting related environment benefits.

OPGC is also using fly ash effectively as a substitute for natural soil in almost all kinds of geo-technical applications. Use of fly ash for construction of roads / embankments, reclamation of low-lying areas, construction of dykes etc. not only saves the earth but prevent creation of low-lying area which otherwise would be created by excavation of soil and would again have potential to become a source of environmental hazard in future.

We at OPGC Continuously striving for cutting edge technology; so that, fly ash the convenient resource, can be utilized to maximum possible extent in all walks of our life for betterment of environment and society to a greater extent.

FLY ASH IS NOT A WASTE; IT IS A USEFUL RESOURCE
