    1. With nothing connected to the generator, start theengine as described in this manual.

    2. Plug in andturn on the first load, preferably the largestload you have.

    3. Permit the generator output to stabilize (engine runssmoothly and attached deviceoperates properly).

    4. Plug in andturn on the next load.

    5. Again, permit the generator to stabilize.

    6. Repeatsteps 4 and 5 for each additional load.

    3. Reattachthe screen with four screws.

    Clean CoolingSystem

Over time debris may accumulate in cylinder cooling fins andcannot be observedwithout partial engine disassembly. Forthis reason,we recommend you have an authorized servicedealer clean the cooling system per recommended intervals(see MaintenanceSchedule in the Maintenance section).Equally important is to keep top of engine free from debris. Also see Cleaning.

    CheckValve Clearance

Regular valve clearancecheck and adjustment will improveperformance and extend engine life. This procedure cannotbe done without partial engine disassembly and the use ofspecial tools. For this reason we recommend that you havean authorized Service Dealercheck and adjust valveclearanceat recommended intervals (see MaintenanceSchedule in the Maintenance section).

    CarburetorAdjustment

The carburetor on this engine is low emission. It is equippedwith a non-adjustable idle mixture valve. Top speed has beenset at the factory. If adjustment is required, see anauthorized service dealer.

_i, CAUTION Excessively high operating speeds increase

risk of injury and damage to generator.Excessively low speeds impose a heavy load.• DO NOTtamper with governed speed. Generatorsupplies

correct rated frequency and voltage when running at governedspeed.

    • DO NOTmodify generator in any way.

    23

  • StorageThe generator should be started at least once every sevendays and allowed to run at least 30 minutes. If this cannot bedone and you must store the unit for more than 30 days, usethe following guidelines to prepare it for storage.

    GeneratorStorage

    • Cleanthe generator as outlined in Cleaningin theMaintenancesection.

    • Checkthat cooling air slots and openings on generatorare open and unobstructed.

    LongTerm StorageInstructions

Fuel can becomestale when stored over 30 days. Stale fuelcauses acid and gum deposits to form in the fuel system oron essential carburetor parts. To keep fuel fresh, use Briggs& Stratton FRESHSTART® fuel stabilizer, available as aliquid additive or a drip concentrate cartridge.

There is no needto drain gasoline from the engine if a fuelstabilizer is added according to instructions. Run the enginefor 2 minutes to circulate the stabilizer throughout the fuelsystem. The engine andfuel can then be stored up to24 months.

If gasoline in the engine has not beentreated with a fuelstabilizer, it must be drained into an approved container. Runthe engine until it stops from lack of fuel. The use of a fuelstabilizer in the storage container is recommended tomaintain freshness.

_i, WARNING Fuel and its vapors are extremelyflammable and explosive._ J

_, _ Fire or explosion can causesevereburns or death.

WHENSTORINGFUELOREQUIPMENTWITHFUELINTANK• Store away from furnaces, stoves, water heaters, clothes dryers

or other appliances that have pilot light or other ignition sourcebecausethey can ignite fuel vapors.

    WHEN DRAININGFUEL

    • Turn generator OFFand let it cool at least2 minutes beforeremoving fuel cap. Loosen cap slowly to relieve pressure intank.

    • Drain fuel tank outdoors.

    • Keepfuel away from sparks, open flames, pilot lights, heat, andother ignition sources.

    • DO NOTlight a cigarette or smoke.

    ChangeOil

While engine is still warm, drain oil from crankcase. Refillwith recommended grade. See Changing Engine Oil in EngineMaintenance.

    OtherStorageTips

    1. DO NOTstore fuel from one seasonto another unless ithas beentreated as described in Protect Fuel System.

    2. Replacefuel can if it starts to rust. Contaminatedfuelwill cause engine problems.

    3. If possible, store unit indoors and cover it to giveprotection from dust and dirt.

    4. Cover unit with a suitable protective cover that does notretain moisture.

_i, WARNING Storage covers can be flammable.

LookFor RelevantEmissionsDurability Period andAirIndex InformationOnYour EngineEmissionsLabel

Engines that are certified to meet the CaliforniaAirResourcesBoard (CARD)Emissions Standard must displayinformation regardingthe Emissions Durability Period andthe Air Index. Briggs & Stratton makes this informationavailableto the consumer on our emissions labels. Theengine emissions labelwill indicate certification information.

The EmissionsDurability Perioddescribes the number ofhours of actual running time for which the engine is certifiedto be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenanceinaccordancewith the Operating & Maintenance Instructions. The following categories are used:

Moderate:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 125 hoursof actual engine running time.

Intermediate:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 250 hoursof actual engine running time.

Extended:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 500 hoursof actual engine running time.

For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to25 hours peryear. Therefore, the Emissions DurabilityPeriod of an engine with an intermediate rating wouldequate to 10 to 12 years. Briggs & Stratton engines arecertified to meet the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency (USEPA)Phase2 emissions standards. For Phase2certified engines, the Emissions Compliance Period referredto on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the numberof operating hours for which the engine has beenshown tomeet Federalemissions requirements.

    For engines less than 225 cc displacement.Category C = 125 hoursCategory B = 250 hoursCategory A = 500 hours

    For engines of 225 cc or more displacement.Category C = 250 hoursCategory B = 500 hoursCategory A = 1000 hours

PowerRatings:The gross power rating for individual gas engine models is labeledin accordancewith SAE(Society of Automotive Engineers)code J1940 (Small EnginePower & Torque Rating Procedure), and rating performance has been obtained and corrected in accordancewith

SAEJ1995 (Revision 2002-05). Torque valuesare derived at 3060 RPM; horsepower valuesare derived at 3600 RPM. Actual gross engine

power will be lower and is affected by, among other things, ambient operating conditions and engine-to-enginevariability. Givenboth the wide

array of products on which enginesare placedand the variety of environmental issues applicable to operating the equipment, the gasengine

will not develop the rated gross power when used in a given pieceof power equipment (actual "on-site" or net power). This difference is due to

a variety of factors including, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuel pump, etc.), application

limitations, ambient operating conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude), and engine-to-engine variability. Due to manufacturing and capacity

limitations, Briggs & Stratton may substitute an engine of higher rated power for this Series engine.
