VEGACONNECT 4 is designed for use in an industrialenvironment. Nevertheless, electromagnetic interference fromelectrical conductors and radiated emissions must be takeninto account, as is usual with a class A instrument according toEN 61326. If VEGACONNECT 4 is used in a differentenvironment, the electromagnetic compatibility to other in-struments must be ensured by suitable measures.

2.6 Safety instructions for Ex areasPlease note the Ex-specific safety information for installationand operation in Ex areas. These safety instructions are part ofthe operating instructions manual and come with the Ex-approved instruments.

2.7 Environmental instructionsProtection of the environment is one of our most importantduties. That is why we have introduced an environmentmanagement system with the goal of continuously improvingcompany environmental protection. The environment man-agement system is certified according to DIN EN ISO 14001.Please help us fulfil this obligation by observing the environ-mental instructions in this manual:l Chapter "Packaging, transport and storage"l Chapter "Disposal"

3.2 Principle of operationVEGACONNECT 4 is an interface converter for connection ofcommunication-capable VEGA instruments to the USB inter-face of a PC. It can also be used as a universal HART modemfor sensors from other manufacturers. An adjustment softwaresuch as PACTware™ with VEGA DTMs is required forparameter adjustment of these instruments.VEGACONNECT 4 can be connected to the following VEGAinstruments. All currently available electronics versions aresupported (HART, Profibus PA, Foundation Fieldbus). Wheninstruments from the plics® series are used, VEGACONNECT4 can be inserted directly into the respective instrument.l VEGAPULS radar sensorsl VEGASON ultrasonic sensorsl VEGAFLEX guided microwavel VEGABAR process pressure transmitterl Pressure transmitter D seriesl Capacitive electrode EL/EKl VEGADIS indicating instrumentsl VEGAMET signal conditioning instrumentsl Wireless Gateways PLICSRADIOConnection cable, adapter and terminals for connection to thedifferent instrument series are attached to all VEGACONNECT4. These adapters can be kept in the storage space of theconnection box.The VEGACONNECT 4 interface converter is connected viathe USB connection to a PC. It converts the signals andprotocols of the USB interface into the corresponding signal/protocol of the connected instrument. The following systemsare supported:l 4 … 20 mA with superimposed HART protocoll Profibus PA via I²C protocoll Foundation Fieldbus via I²C protocolVoltage supply of VEGACONNECT 4 is provided via the USBinterface of the PC.You can find detailed information on the power supply inchapter "Technical data" in the "Supplement".

3.3 OperationThe adjustment is carried out via a Windows PC with aparameter adjustment software such as PACTware™ withrespective DTM. There are no adjustment elements on theinstrument itself.

3.4 Storage and transportYour instrument was protected by packaging during transport. Its capacity to handle normal loads during transport is assuredby a test according to DIN EN 24180.The packaging of standard instruments consists of environ-ment-friendly, recyclable cardboard. For special versions, PEfoam or PE foil is also used. Dispose of the packaging materialvia specialised recycling companies.

4 Connection4.1 Connection to the PCNote:First of all you should install the driver before connectingVEGACONNECT 4 to the PC.

An USB interface (1.1 or 2.0) is compulsory for connection ofVEGACONNECT 4 to a PC. The connection is provided withthe supplied USB cable. Voltage supply of VEGACONNECT 4is provided via the USB interface. If the supplied USB connection cable is replaced by anotherone, make sure that the isolation thickness of this cable ismore than 0.65 mm.

To operate VEGACONNECT 4, a suitable driver is requiredwhich is included on the CD "DTM Collection". As analternative, the software is also available free-of-charge fromour homepage. You should always use the latest version toensure the support of all instrument functions. The systemrequirements for operation correspond to those of the "DTMCollection" or of PACTware™.When installing the driver package "VEGA-DTM for Commu-nication", the suitable instrument driver is installed automati-cally. When connecting VEGACONNECT 4, the driverinstallation is finished automatically and is ready for operationwithout a restart.

4.2 Connection of the sensor/signal conditioninginstrument

VEGACONNECT 4 can be connected to virtually all commu-nication-capable VEGA instruments. With instruments of theplics® series it can be mounted directly into the sensor. In thiscase, you can remove VEGACONNECT 4 out of theconnection box and insert it into the plics® device instead ofthe indicating and adjustment module.Connection to all instrument series can be provided withoutproblems via the supplied adapters.

Note:Communication with the sensor is carried out with VEGAMET624/625 and VEGASCAN 693 also via the front I²C interface ofthe signal conditioning instrument. The connection of VEGA-CONNECT 4 directly to the 4 … 20 mA sensor cable is notpossible.

5.2 Connection via HARTIf the resistance of the connected processing system is lessthan 230 Ohm, the digital adjustment signal is extremelydamped or short-circuited. Digital communication with the PCis then no longer possible. With low impedance processingsystems, a resistance of approx. 230 Ohm must be integratedinto the 4 … 20 mA connection cable. The connection can beeither carried out in parallel to the sensor or via the resistor.

Note:When connecting to a VEGAMET 381, VEGADIS 371 orVEGATRENN 149 there is no additional HART resistorrequired. These instruments have also connection sockets fordirect connection of the 2 mm pins.
