General comments on safetyAs long as you use the bevel trimmer ROGAtrim KS4-3p correct your security is ensured at anytime. Due to the various adjustments possible and the wide working range, the cutting area cannot be totally protected. If not used properly up to most severe cutting accidents are possible. Therefore the apparatus may only be operated by personnel, that has been instructed by theproducer (or have obtained an instruction which permits to be aware of the possible riscsinvolved with non protected rotating knives and are capable to act in consequence). As long as not both motors are not switched off, do not leave the equipment unsupervised,. Donot operate the equipment in damp areas or with explosive hazard. Do not work on materialscontaining health-endangering substances. Due to the possible high number of revolutions of thehelical cutter, only our spare knives may be used.

Safety devicesSafety devices protect from injuries and are not to be altered or to be avoided (the only exceptionis described under SET UP; Guide bar and fixing down device)

ConservationThe packaging is recyclable.

DisposalThis equipment has been developed in regard of long-lasting and good recycling abilities.Due to the long life span it can not be excluded that upon this time the disposal of certain partswill be defined as precarious. INSTRUCTIONS

Controls:Start motor

Stop motor (pressed twice or for a long period motor coast to a standstill)

Change direction [only bevelling motor(s)]

Increase value

Decrease value

Start-up:- place the bevel trimmer ROGAtrim KS4-3p on a work bench or another firm base in order

to have a comfortable working height [a support (36) is available as accessory for the bevel

trimmer ROGAtrim KS4]- have a plug with earth pin wired up by an electrician and plug it into the mains (220 - 240 V

a.c.)- The speed indication (in Hz) should be negative (may be obtained by pressing )- Set on ( ). The helical cutter motor (10) will now run backwards and the knives might

make a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be movedto the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

- Press (no negative sign in the speed indication)The machine is now ready for use

Suction extraction:When operated, a suction extraction is necessary. Therefore attach a vacuum cleaner at thesuction extractor of the casting body (15)

Bevelling of samples:Select the minimum acceptable speed for the helical cutter (4). Knops need slower speeds thanvelours. Find the best speeds by experimentation and reuse these settingsa) without guide bar (28) (e.g. guidance of the samples by hand)

- Samples are held with the pile upward- Samples (except small ones) are taken in such a way between both hands: the two

thumbs lie behind the sample, the showing and middle fingers are on top, the distancebetween the middle fingers and the carpet edge should be about 3.5 cm (the thumbspress the sample against the index fingers and lift thereby the end slightly up)

- the sample is pushed against the rail (24). Then the hands rest on the conveyor belt andgo from right to left by passing the cutting line. Particularly in the beginning thismovement should start on the outer end of the guide bar and stop late

Notes:- for the first attempts, samples of about 15 x 20 cm should be used- start with an conveyor belt speed of about 20 Hz.- the guide bar II (5) has to be installed- no fixing down device (29)

Page 9: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

Operating instructions ROGAtrim KS4-3p - 9 -

b) with guide bar and fixing down device - put the sample with the pile upward between the rail (24) and the guide bar (28)- follow the movement of the conveyor belt until the pression of the fixing down device

(29) on the sample is sufficient that it is pulled by the conveyor (17)

Adjustment of the fixed blade:When the cutting quality diminishes, the fixed blade(12) may be readjusted a few times. In orderto prevent that the fixed blade is too much advanced [which may damage the fixed blade (12) andthe helical cutter (4)], this should be done while the helical cutter motor turns slowly.Use the pin-key to slightly slacken the inner star nut (13). Then push the fixed blade with theouter star nut (13) slowly, until the fixed blade (12) and the helical cutter (4) restart to contact(the noise should only slightly increase). Now rig the star nuts (13) against each other, withoutchanging the intensity of the noise. If the cutting quality remains insufficient despite this readjustment, the fixed blade (12) and thehelical cutter (4) must be ground in (see servicing; grinding in helical cutter/fixed blade)

Page 10: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

SET UP

Cutting angle:The cutting line is brought to the desired inclination after the locking screw (1) has been released(pulled out plastic handle is freely movable)

Adjustable safety shield (applies only to static cutting line):This serves also as fixing down device. After loosening of the knurled thumb screw (8) the safetyshield (7) can be adjusted. It should not rub on the conveyor (17)

RailThe distance between rail (24) and conveyor (17) amounts to approx. 2 mm.The guide bar II (5) is only used if samples are guided by hand. In this case it is aligned with therail. Otherwise the guide bar II is “parked” in the outermost position

Guide bar and fixing down device- After loosening of the locking screw (30) the guide bar is positioned to the sample width. It

should guide the samples without squeezing- The fixing down device (29) should be parallel to the rail and in the middle- The pressure of the fixing down device is adjusted by means of the adjusting ring (31).

Apply as little pressure as possible, but enough that the samples will not swivel easily

With very narrow samples, the finger protection prevents these adjustments. In this case thefinger protection may be removed

Warning! As soon as the sample size permits, the finger protection has to be reinstalled

For samples larger then approximately 150 mm it is suggested to use a second fixing downdevice (see accessories)

Movable cutting lines type A and BThe vertical position of the cutting lines is adjusted with the knurled thumb screw (35) (which isblocked by the locking screw (34)

By adjusting the position of the cutting line type B be careful to not cut into the conveyor. Forsamples with extra thin backing the slide bar may be necessary (see accessories). This slide barlifts the samples a little bit.

To move the cutting lines loosen the locking screw (32). To adjust to the width, the sample isstopped at the cutting position. Then the hand drive (33) moves the cutting line until the pile iscut as desired

Page 11: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

Due to the very sturdy construction and the lifetime-lubricated bearings an extremely long lifespan of the bevel trimmers ROGAtrim KS4-3p may be expectedThe maintenance is limited- daily:

cleaning- weekly:

- cleaning of the back of the conveyor (17) (compressed air and/or knive)- release the pulleys from rolled up threads

Page 13: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

DEALING WITH FAULTS

Torn corners:a) Check if the distance between cutting line and the conveyor (17) belt is about 2 mmb) Check the distance between the helical cutter and the fixed blade (see Servicing; Alignment

of helical cutter and fixed blade)

Samples get stuck:Check if the distance between cutting line and the conveyor (17) belt is about 2 mm

Basic fabric is cut:- Loosen the 2 hex cap screws (18) and then screw them up again slightly- Turn the head of the hex cap set screw (19) counter clockwise until the desired cutting depth

is reached (the normal setting is about 0.6 mm back from the fixed blade)- Re-tighten the 2 hex cap screws (18)

Do not loosen nut and locknut!

Pile is trimmed insufficiently:- Loosen the 2 hex cap screws (18) and then screw them up again slightly- Turn the head of the hex cap set screw (19) counter clockwise until the desired cutting depth

is reached (the normal setting is about 0.6 mm back from the fixed blade)- Re-tighten the 2 hex cap screws (18)

Pile is trimmed badly or not at all:a) Check position of cutting lineb) Check the direction of rotation of the helical cutterc) Re-grind (see Grinding in of helical cutter/fixed blade

Page 14: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

SERVICING

Servicing position of the cutting lineThe cutting line is released from the rocker mount (25) by swivellinga) static cutting line:

the rocker (9) is pushed into the rocker mount so that the first leading cam (26) fixes intothe rocker and is then swivelled above the second leading cam and the thread of the lockingscrew (1) which should then be tightened up

b) movable cutting line:Dismount the static finger protection and bring the cutting line into the holding fit (seeaccessories)

After servicing, check the correct position of the cutting line:a) static cutting line:

Adjustment either by the elevation of the rocker mount (25) or after the two screws (27)have been slightly loosened

b) movable cutting line:see Movable cutting lines type A and B

Replacing the fixed blade:- Put the cutting line in the servicing position (see servicing position of the cutting line)- Remove the two crank screws (16). Loosen the rigging of the left and right star nut (13/14)

and free the fixed blade by swivelling- Remount the new fixed blade and ground in (see Grinding in helical cutter/fixed blade)

Grinding in helical cutter/fixed blade:- Put the cutting line in the servicing position (see servicing position of the cutting line)- Change the direction of rotation by pressing [speed indication (in Hz) is negative]- Set helical cutter motor on and choose a low speed- Brush on a light coating of the grinding agent supplied across the full width of the helical

cutter (4) - Move the fixed blade (12) slowly into contact, so that the grinding agent can work freely.

Leave the motor running and continue to apply the grinding agent across the full width untilthe grinding noise ceases

- The helical cutter may have a ground face of about 0.2 mm- Disconnect the machine and clean off the grinding agent from the helical cutter, etc.- Plug in the machine and change the direction of rotation- Bring the cutting line in working state

Replacing the helical cutter:- Remove the fixed blade (12) (see Replacing the fixed blade). Check that its cutting edge is

in good condition- Loosen the 2 screws and remove the cover [or rocker (9) in case of a static cutting line]- Clamp a piece of soft material (aluminium / wood) between the helical cutter (4) and the

cast iron body (15) so that the fixing screw of the helical cutter can be released. The helicalcutter can now be removed

Page 15: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ROTTERMANNmake a slight scraping noise. If there is a heavy noise, the fixed blade (12) must be moved to the left and reground (see Replacing the fixed blade)

Operating instructions ROGAtrim KS4-3p - 15 -

- The motor shaft is slightly oiled and the helical cutter is replaced (since grinding workshopsnormally give no guarantee that a re-ground helical cutter is perfectly concentric andbalanced, this component should be returned to us for re-grinding) and the fixed bladeremounted

- Align helical cutter to the fixed blade (see Alignment of helical cutter and fixed blade)- Grind in the knives (see Grinding in helical cutter/fixed blade)

Alignment of helical cutter and fixed blade:The helical cutter (4) should be flush with the outer surface of the fixed blade (12). Check byplacing a ruler on the fixed blade and turn the helical cutter by hand. The highest point of theblade should just touchCorrect with the nut (14) after the two hex cap screws (20) have been slightly loosened

NOTE: Do not touch the two red marked socket head screws!

Re-sharpening of the fixed blade:After re-sharpening, the chamfer of the fixed blade (12) should be about 0,2 mm

Setting the conveyor belt:After the two hex cap screws (22) have been slightly loosened, the conveyor belt (17) can betensioned by turning the two hex cap screws with check nut (23). To check tension, try to holdthe conveyor belt by hand. The tension is correct if you can hold it, but barelyCheck the position of the rail (24), and if used also of the guide bar II (5) (see Rail)
