The refrigerant system is tested for leaks. This appliance complieswith statutory safety requirements.

This appliance contains the refrigerant Isobutane (R600a), a natu-ral gas which is environmentally friendly. Although it is combustible,it does not damage the ozone layer and does not increase the green-house effect. The use of this refrigerant has, however, led to a slight increase inthe noise level of the appliance. In addition to the noise of the com-pressor, you might be able to hear the refrigerant flowing around thesystem. This is unavoidable, and does not have any adverse effecton the performance of the appliance.Care must be taken during the transportation and setting up of theappliance that no parts of the cooling system are damaged. Leakingrefrigerant can cause severe irritation to the eyes.In the event of any damage:

– avoid open flames and anything that creates a spark,

– disconnect the appliance from the electrical power supply,

– ventilate the room where the appliance is located for several min-utes, and

– contact Miele Technical Service.

The more coolant there is in an appliance, the larger the room itshould be installed in. In the event of a leakage, if the appliance is ina small room, there is the danger of combustible gases building up.For every 11 g of coolant at least 1 m3 of room space is required. Theamount of coolant in the appliance is stated on the data plate insidethe appliance.

To avoid the risk of damage to the appliance, make sure that theconnection data (fuse rating, frequency and voltage) on the dataplate corresponds to the household supply.Check that this is the case before connecting the appliance. Consulta qualified electrician if in any doubt.

The correct temperature

25

It is very important to set the correcttemperature for storing food in the ap-pliance. Bacteria will cause food whichis not stored at the correct temperatureto deteriorate rapidly.

The temperature in the appliance willrise:

– if you open the door frequently orkeep it open too long,

– the more food that is stored in it

– if you put food in it that is too warm,

– the higher the ambient temperaturesurrounding the appliance. The appli-ance is designed for use within spe-cific ambient temperatures (climaterange). Do not use in ambient tem-peratures for which it is not designed.

. . . in the refrigerator sectionWe recommend a temperature of 39°F(4°C) in the refrigerator section.

Automatic cold air circulation (Dyna-Cool)

The fan automatically turns on when thecooling system for the refrigerator sec-tion turns on. It distributes the tempera-ture in the refrigerator section to all ar-eas evenly so that all the food inside willbe chilled to about the same degree.

. . . in the freezer sectionTo freeze fresh food and to store frozenfood for a long time, a temperature of0°F (-18°C) is required. Partially de-frosted or fully defrosted food must notbe re-frozen. Food may be re-frozenonce it has been cooked.

The correct temperature

26

Temperature display

In normal operation, the upper tem-perature display shows the currentaverage refrigerator section tem-perature and the lower temperaturedisplay shows the highest freezersection temperature currently beingrecorded within the machine.

Depending on the ambient temperatureand the temperature setting, it can takethe machine a few hours to reach thetemperature required and for this tem-perature to then be shown as a con-stant temperature on the display.

If the temperature in the freezerremains above 0°F (-18°C) for a longtime, check that the frozen food hasnot started to defrost. If it has, use the food as soon aspossible or cook it before freezing itagain.

Setting the temperature Use the two  and  sensor buttons

for the relevant section to set thetemperature higher or lower.

The following changes will be seen onthe display when the sensor buttons aretouched:

– With the first touch: The last temper-ature set flashes.

– Each subsequent touch: The temper-ature changes in 1° increments.

– Keeping your finger on the sensorbutton: The temperature changescontinuously.

Approximately 5 seconds after the lasttime a sensor button was touched, theactual temperature inside the appliancewill automatically be displayed.

The correct temperature

27

Temperature range

– The temperature in the refrigeratorsection can be set between 36°F(2°C) and 45°F (7°C).

– The temperature in the freezer sec-tion can be set between 7°F (-14°C)and -15°F (-26°C).

Tip: If you have adjusted the tempera-ture, wait for approx. 6 hours if themachine is not very full and for ap-prox. 24 hours if the machine is fullbefore checking the temperature dis-play. It will take this long for an accuratereading to be given.

If, after this time, the temperature isstill too high or too low, adjust itagain.

Storing food in the refrigerator section

36

Do not load more than a maximum of35 lb (16 kg) of food in the appliancedoor.

WARNING! Fire hazard!Do not operate any electrical equip-ment inside the appliance. This cancause sparking.

Danger of explosion!Do not store any explosive materialsor products containing flammablepropellants (e.g., spray cans) in themachine.

If storing food which contains fator oil in the machine or the machinedoor, stress cracks may be caused inthe plastic, resulting in it breaking.Make sure that no oil or fat leaksonto the plastic parts of the machine.

Various cooling zonesDue to natural air circulation there aredifferent temperature zones in the re-frigerator section.

Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowest sec-tion of the appliance. Make use of thedifferent temperature zones when plac-ing food in the appliance.

To allow air to circulate efficiently, donot pack food too closely together inthe refrigerator.

If there is insufficient air circulationthe cooling performance will de-crease and energy consumption willincrease.Do not cover the fan in the rear wallof the refrigerator.

Food must not touch the back of therefrigerator section as it may freeze tothe back wall.

This appliance has DynamicCooling, which helps to keep an even tempera-ture when the fan is running. WhenDynamicCooling is turned on, the dif-ference between the various zones isless pronounced.

Warmest area

The warmest area in the refrigeratorsection is in the top section of the door.Use this for storing butter so that it re-mains spreadable and cheese so that itretains its flavor.

Coldest area

The coldest area in the refrigerator sec-tion is directly above the fruit and veg-etable drawers and at the back.

Storing food in the refrigerator section

37

Use these areas to store all delicate andhighly perishable food, e.g.,

– fish, meat, poultry,

– cold cuts, ready-made meals,

– dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream,

– fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orpie dough,

– raw milk cheese and other raw milkproducts,

– pre-packed vegetables and otherfresh food whose best-before daterequires storage at a temperature ofat least 39°F (4°C).

Food which is not suitable forstorage in the refrigerator sec-tionNot all food is suitable for refrigerationat temperatures below 41°F (5°C) be-cause it is sensitive to cold. Dependingon the type of food, the appearance, consistency, flavor and/or vitamin con-tent may be altered if stored at too colda temperature.

Food that is sensitive to cold includes:

– pineapple, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, mangos, melons, pa-paya, passion fruit, citrus fruit (suchas lemons, oranges, mandarins, grapefruit),

– fruit that is not yet ripe,

– eggplant, cucumbers, potatoes, pep-pers, tomatoes, zucchini,

– hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan.

Storing food in the refrigerator section

38

What to be aware of whenshopping for foodThe freshness of food when first placedin the appliance is the most importantfactor in determining how long it staysfresh, and how long it can be kept in theappliance.Always observe the use-by date andthe recommended storage temperature.Time out of the refrigerator should bekept to a minimum, for example, whentransporting food in a hot car.

Tip: Take a cool bag with you whenshopping and on return place food intothe appliance immediately.

Storing food correctlyEnsure that food stored in the refrigera-tor section is in packaging or coveredproperly. This will prevent food smellsfrom affecting other foods, food fromdrying out, and also any cross-contami-nation of bacteria. This is especially im-portant when storing meat products.By ensuring that the temperature set-tings are correct and by taking appro-priate hygiene measures, you can pro-long the storage life of your food con-siderably.

Fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables can be storedloose in the fruit and vegetable drawers.

Protein-rich food

Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others. Shellfish, for example, deteriorates faster thanfish, and fish deteriorates faster thanmeat.

Freezing and storing food

42

Always observe USDA food safetyguidelines.

WARNING! Fire hazard!Do not operate any electrical equip-ment inside the appliance. This cancause sparking.

Maximum freezing capacityTo ensure that fresh food placed in thefreezer freezes through to the core asquickly as possible, the maximumfreezing capacity must not be ex-ceeded. The maximum freezing capac-ity for freezing within a 24-hour periodis given on the data plate: "Freezing ca-pacity ....lbs/24 hrs."

What happens when you freezefresh food?Fresh food should be frozen as quicklyas possible so that the nutritional valueof the food, its vitamin content, appear-ance and flavor are maintained.

The longer food is frozen, the more wa-ter it loses from each individual cell in tothe intermediate spaces. The cells thenshrink. During the defrosting process, only some of this water is reabsorbedby the cells. In practical terms, thismeans that the food loses a substantialamount of liquid, which can be seen bythe fact that a large pool of water col-lects around it.

If food is frozen quickly, the cells haveless time to lose moisture, so theyshrink less. As there is not so muchmoisture loss, it is easier for the food toreabsorb it during the defrostingprocess, and very little water collectsaround the defrosted food.

Storing frozen foodWhen buying frozen food to store inyour freezer, make sure to check:

– that the packaging is not damaged,

– the expiration date and

– the temperature at which the frozenfood is being stored in the shop. Thelength of time it can be kept is re-duced if it has been stored at a tem-perature warmer than 0°F (-18°C).

Buy frozen food at the very end ofyour shopping trip.

Store it in the freezer compartment assoon as possible.

Never re-freeze partially or fullydefrosted food. Defrosted food mayonly be re-frozen after it has beencooked.

Freezing and storing food

43

Home freezing

Only freeze food that is fresh and ingood condition.

Tips for home freezing

– The following types of food are suit-able for home freezing:fresh meat, poultry, game, fish, veg-etables, herbs, fresh fruit, dairy prod-ucts, baked goods, leftovers, eggyolks, egg whites, and a range of pre-cooked meals.

– The following types of food are notsuitable for freezing:grapes, lettuce, radishes, sour cream, mayonnaise, whole eggs in theirshells, onions, whole raw apples andpears.

– To retain color, taste, aroma, and vi-tamin C, vegetables should beblanched before they are frozen. Todo so, place them portion by portioninto boiling water for 2–3 minutes.Then, remove and plunge the vegeta-bles into ice-cold water to coolquickly. Leave the vegetables todrain.

– Lean meat freezes better than fattymeat and can be stored for consider-ably longer.

– Separate chops, steaks, cutlets, etc.with a sheet of plastic freezer film. toprevent them from freezing togetherin a block.

– Do not season raw food or blanchedvegetables with herbs or salt beforefreezing. Cooked food should only belightly seasoned. The flavor of someherbs intensifies when frozen.

– Placing hot food or drink in thefreezer causes food that is alreadyfrozen to partially thaw and increasesenergy consumption. Allow hot foodand drink to cool down before plac-ing it in the freezer.

Packaging food for freezing

Freeze food in portions.

– Suitable packaging

– Plastic films

– Freezer bags

– Aluminum foil

– Freezer containers

– Unsuitable packaging

– Packing paper

– Parchment paper

– Cellophane

– Garbage bags

– Plastic shopping bags

Remove as much air as possible fromthe packaging before sealing.

Close the packaging tightly with

– rubber bands

– bag clips

– string or bag ties, or

– freezer tape.

Tip: Freezer bags and tubular polyethyl-ene film may also be sealed using homeheat sealing kits.

Label the packaging with the con-tents and the date of freezing.

Freezing and storing food

44

Before placing food in the freezer

When freezing more than 4.4 lbs(2 kg) of fresh food, turn on the Su-perFrost function for some time be-fore placing the food in the freezer(see "Using SuperFrost, AutomaticSuperCool, and DynaCool – Super-Frost function").

This helps food which is already storedin the freezer to stay frozen.

Placing food in the freezer

The following maximum loadsmust not be exceeded: – freezer drawer = 55.1 lbs (25 kg)– glass plate = 77.1 lbs (35 kg)

Unfrozen food should not touchfrozen food, as this will cause thefrozen food to begin to thaw.

When placing items in the freezer, en-sure that the packaging and contain-ers are dry to prevent them fromfreezing together or to the walls of thefreezer.

- Freezing small quantities of food

Place the food in the upper freezerdrawers.

Place the food flat in the bottom ofthe freezer drawer so that it freezesthrough to the middle as quickly aspossible.

- Freezing the maximum amount offood (see data plate)

Ensure that the ventilation slots atthe back of the freezer section are al-ways free from obstruction. If the ventilation slots are obstructed, the cooling performance will de-crease and energy consumption willincrease. When arranging food on the glassplate, make sure that it does notblock the ventilation slots.

Remove the upper freezer drawers.

Place the food flat on the upper glassplates so that it freezes through to themiddle as quickly as possible.

Once the freezing process is com-plete, place the frozen food in thefreezer drawer and push it back in.

Freezing and storing food

45

Storage time for frozen food

The storage life of food is very variable, even at a constant temperature of 0 °F(-18 °C). Decomposition processes alsotake place in frozen food, albeit at avery reduced speed. For example fatcan become rancid from contact withoxygen in the air. This is why lean meatcan be stored approx. twice as long asfatty meat.

The storage times quoted are guide val-ues for the storage life of different foodgroups in the freezer section.

Food group Storagetime(Months)

Ice cream 2 to 6

Bread, baked goods 2 to 6

Cheese 2 to 4

Fish, oily 1 to 2

Fish, lean 1 to 5

Sausage, ham 1 to 3

Game, pork 1 to 12

Poultry, beef 2 to 10

Vegetables, fruit 6 to 18

Herbs 6 to 10

Where the storage time given on thepackaging differs, follow the advice onthe packaging.

Defrosting

Frozen food can be thawed in variousways:

– in the microwave,

– in a regular oven, using the "Fan" or"Defrost" setting

– at room temperature,

– in the refrigerator section (the coldgiven off by the frozen food helps tokeep the other food cold),

– in a steam oven.

Flat pieces of partially thawed meat orfish can be placed directly into a hotskillet.

Meat and poultry (e.g. hamburger, chicken, fish) should not come into con-tact with other foods while defrosting.Catch the defrosting liquid and disposeof it carefully.

Fruit can be thawed at room tempera-ture, either in the packaging or in a cov-ered bowl.

Most vegetables can be cooked whilestill frozen. Just put straight into boilingwater or hot fat. The cooking time isslightly less than that of fresh vegeta-bles due to changes in the cell struc-ture.

Never re-freeze partially or fullydefrosted food. Defrosted food mayonly be re-frozen after it has beencooked.

Making ice cubes

47

For the automatic ice cube maker tooperate, it must be connected to awater supply (see "Water supply").

Danger to health! The first three batches of ice cubesmade after the ice cube maker isstarted up must not be consumed,as the water will have been used forthe initial rinse through the watersupply line. This applies to the initial commis-sioning as well as when using themachine again after it has beenturned off for a long while.

Turning on the ice cube maker

Only make normal domestic quantitiesof ice cubes with the ice cube maker.

After the initial commissioning of themachine, it can take up to 24 hours forthe first ice cubes to drop out of theice cube maker and collect in thedrawer. After the ice cube maker has beenturned off and on again, this processlasts max. 6 hours.

Check whether the non-return valvein the water supply line is open.

Touch the sensor button.

The display LED will light up.

If it was not turned on before, thefreezer section now turns on automati-cally. As soon as the water is frozen, theice cubes drop out of the ice cubemaker into the ice cube container. When a certain volume is reached, icecube production is automatically ad-justed.

Ice cubes can only be made when theice cube drawer is completely closed.

If the ice cube maker indicatorlight flashes, the ice cube maker hasan insufficient supply of water. Checkthat the water inlet is open.

Making ice cubes

48

Making a large quantity of icecubesThe amount of ice cubes made by themachine depends on the temperature inthe freezer section. The lower the tem-perature, the more ice cubes are pro-duced within a given time. With a settemperature of 0°F (-18°C), around 100–120 ice cubes will be produced within24 hours.

The ice cube maker automatically stopsmaking ice cubes when the ice cubedrawer is full.

Tip: If you require a large quantity of icecubes, replace the full ice cube drawerwith the drawer to the right of it.

The ice cube maker will start making icecubes again as soon as this drawer isclosed.

If you want to make the maximumamount of ice cubes (up to 150 icecubes/24 hours), turn on the Su-perFrost function beforehand. Pleasenote, however, that this will increasethe energy consumption of the ma-chine.

Changing the size of the icecubesThe size of the ice cubes depends onthe quantity of water being taken in.You are able to set this quantity accord-ing to your wishes. To make larger icecubes, increase the amount of waterbeing taken in by the ice cube maker. The amount of water is set to medium(E 3) at the factory.

Instructions for how to set the water in-let time of the ice cube maker can befound in the section on "Selecting addi-tional settings – Changing the size ofthe ice cubes".

Touch the sensor button for turn-ing the ice cube maker on and off sothat the display LED goes out.

If the ice cube maker is going to beturned off for a long period of time

Risk of damage! If the water inlet is blocked while theice cube maker is still in use, the wa-ter inlet pipe can freeze up.Turn the ice cube maker off if the wa-ter inlet is interrupted (e.g. while onvacation).

Close the non-return valve in the wa-ter supply line.

If the display LED begins to flash, this means that there is still water re-maining in the ice cube maker.

Leave the ice cube maker turned onfor another day so that the remainingice cubes can be produced.

As soon as the remaining ice cubeshave been produced, touch the sensor button for turning the ice cubemaker on and off so that the dis-play LED for the ice cube maker goesout.

Defrosting

50

WARNING! Danger of injury anddamage!Do not use any mechanical or othertypes of aids which are not recom-mended by the manufacturer to ac-celerate the defrosting process.

Refrigerator sectionThe refrigerator defrosts automatically.

Condensate and frost can build-up onthe back wall of the refrigerator whenthe compressor is running. There is noneed to remove it. The condensatedrains through a channel and drain pipeinto an evaporation system at the backof the appliance and evaporates auto-matically with the warmth generated bythe compressor.

Freezer sectionThe appliance is equipped with a"NoFrost" system. The freezer defrostsautomatically.

The moisture generated in the appli-ance collects on the condenser, and isautomatically defrosted and evaporatesperiodically.

This automatic defrosting system en-ables the freezer to remain permanentlyice-free, but the food stored in thefreezer will not defrost!

Side-by-side combinations

As a general rule, refrigerators andfreezers should not be installed sideby side with other such machines soas to avoid a build-up of condensationbetween them and the damage thiscan cause.

However, your machine can be part of a"side-by-side" installation because it isequipped with built-in heating units inthe side panels.

Please contact your dealer for specificinformation about which combinationswill work with your machine.

Installation locationThis appliance should be installed in adry, well-ventilated room.

When deciding where to install your ap-pliance, please bear in mind that theenergy consumption will increase if in-stalled near to a heater, a cooker, orother appliance that gives off heat. Di-rect sunlight should also be avoided. The higher the room temperature, thelonger the compressor has to run andthe higher the energy consumption is.

When installing the appliance, pleasenote:

– The socket must be easily accessiblein an emergency and not concealedbehind the appliance.

– The plug and cord must not touchthe back of the appliance as theycould be damaged by vibrations fromthe appliance.

– Do not plug other appliances intosockets behind this appliance.

In environments with high hu-midity, condensation may appear onthe external surfaces of the machine. This condensate can cause corrosionon external machine panels. For prevention, it is advisable to in-stall the machine with sufficient ven-tilation in a dry and/or air-condi-tioned room. After installation, make sure that themachine doors close properly, the airgrille is not covered, and the ma-chine has been installed in accor-dance with these installation instruc-tions.
