led by Larry Rachleff, our Music Director and Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Orchestral Conducting, will showcase Professor of Piano Jon Kimura Parker as soloist in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F; and Ravel’s Daphnis & Chloe, Suite No. 2 and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 39. We are delighted to welcome Michael Heaston, our new Professor of Opera and Director of Opera Studies with the presen- tation of Francesco Cavalli’s La Calisto, on October 31, November 2 and November 4. The performances will be conducted by guest Gary Wedow and represent a collaborative effort between the School’s opera and cham- ber orchestra programs. The recently conceived Shepherd School Chamber Players enter their second year. This unique initiative features the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra arranged in smaller ensembles of six or more musicians in a new format comprised of three consec- utive, hour-long concerts interspersed with audience receptions. The Shepherd School is the only American educational institution to devote four weeks of each semester to prepar- ing such a program, affording our students the opportunity to finely-tune repertoire not typi- cally explored in a chamber orchestra setting. The performances/receptions will take place on Thursday, November 29. The highly successful “Sharing the Spotlight” series comprised of performances pairing faculty with students enters its fifth concert season. Hearing our gifted young students perform alongside their teachers is particularly gratifying so I urge to you take special note.
