When people ask me to name my proudest accomplishment, my answer is simple. Other than my family, it is the Mitchell Institute. As we celebrate the Institute’s 15th year, I’m proud to say that we’ve awarded $10 million in scholarship assistance to more than 2,000 students from every corner of Maine.

As you’ll see in this report, scholarships are only the beginning of how we help these young minds grow. Throughout the college experience and beyond, we partner with scholars, helping build leadership qualities and enabling them to create their own future, full of possibilities. We have designed programs to further support the professional and personal development of scholars, and have watched our scholars pursue and succeed in a wide range of meaningful careers–most of them right here in Maine.

We have also engaged in research and public policy work to help make college more accessible to all of Maine’s young people.

These scholarships and tailored program opportunities are only possible through your generous support and the tireless work of our volunteers and the entire Mitchell Institute community. For this I am eternally thankful, as are our Scholars and Alumni.

Your support is so vital to the continued success of the Institute. I’m deeply grateful for your commitment to Maine’s young people and the future of our great state. Please consider investing in Maine’s brightest minds today. The return will be immeasurable.

“The scholarship from the Mitchell Institute takes a huge weight off of my shoulders each semester, but the Institute is so much more than that. I was unsure what I was getting myself into when I signed up to attend the Millinocket weekend in the Fall of 2012. Spend a weekend with 30 other people I had never met before? As soon as the first “icebreaker” activity began, I knew that I had made the right choice in attending. As the weekend went on, I found myself constantly amazed and energized. Each person that I met and each person that I talked to had a different story. When the weekend came to an end, I found myself not wanting to leave. Attending that weekend was one of the best decisions that I have made this year, and I feel so fortunate to have been provided the opportunity.”

— Abby Roy

Abby RoyWinslow High School 2012 Bowdoin College 2016

The Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience (MILE) is a weekend-long leadership and professional development event that takes place in Millinocket and involves as many as 50 Scholars each year. This intimate experiential and professional learning program includes guided outdoor exploration activities and a group community service project. Throughout MILE weekend, individual and group leadership,

team building, lively group dialogue around decisions, and awareness of the views of others all become vitally important–whether participants are canoeing down a river, reaching the summit of Mt. Katahdin, or at a dinner table discussing professional ethics. Since 2007, MILE has been fully funded by a single donor–Unum. We are deeply grateful to Unum for playing a critical role in this important program.

The Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience II (MILE II) is sponsored and hosted by Unum and organized by the Mitchell Institute Alumni Council.

This day-long professional development opportunity brings Mitchell Scholars and Alumni together with business and community leaders from across Maine. Exciting professional opportunities and emerging new career paths are presented by speakers and discussed in interactive sessions.

“Along with four friends, I co-founded the University of Maine Business Challenge as a way to give back to Maine and our statewide economy. The Business Challenge is an annual competition intended to give collegiate entrepreneurs in Maine the support they need to transform business dreams into reality. In addition to a cash prize, successful competitors gain access to consulting and networking services as they take the first steps toward developing and growing their businesses.

The Mitchell Institute and the University of Maine Business Challenge are similar in nature,

and that’s no coincidence. The Mitchell Institute gave me far more than a scholarship. It taught me the value of leadership, professional development, and mentorship. The Institute constantly strives to give back to Maine, and that was enough motivation for me to pay it forward and find a creative way to help other young leaders in Maine.”

Receiving a Mitchell Fellowship Award allowed James to conduct key strategic planning in his path to starting the University of Maine Business Challenge.

James Morin | Lewiston High School 2006, University of Maine 2010

A signature program of the Institute, our Fellowship Awards offer support to qualified Scholars and Alumni in their pursuit of internships, service projects, and professional development experiences. These one-time investments empower scholars to pursue professional development opportunities regardless of financial factors. Last year we awarded 52 Scholars and Alumni fellowships ranging from $500 to $1,500, thanks to the generous support of the J.A. & E.S. Hughes Fund at the Maine Community Foundation.

“Aquariums are so much more than just what the public sees when they visit. Aquarium science requires knowledge of plumbing, electrical, water quality, collection (acquisition), ecological relationships and habitats, and animal nutrition and behavior. If just one of these pieces is not working or is not in balance, it can cause a negative domino effect. I love the complexity and the challenges provided on a daily basis in an aquarium.

Karin Paquin was excited to share with the Institute the news of her appointment as Lead Aquarist at the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for the 2013 season. She is thrilled to return to Maine to continue her work in aquarium sciences. Karin credits the Mitchell Institute with helping her achieve her goal of coming back to her home state to become an aquarist during the summer. Ultimately, she hopes to bring her passion for science back to Maine’s classrooms.

The Mitchell Institute has done so much for me throughout the years—from the four - year scholarship as an undergraduate to the professional development scholarship most recently awarded to me as an alum. They even helped me write and edit my first cover letter and resume and provided me with valuable interview advice. The Mitchell Institute has been at the forefront of helping me make a name for myself in my field.”

KeyBank Mitchell Scholars

Each year, 16 scholars–one from each county in Maine–are selected as KeyBank Mitchell Scholars. KeyBank generously supports these $6,000 scholarships, which are awarded with preference to students who are the first in their family to attend college.

“The Mitchell Institute is contributing to the big-picture challenges facing the future of Maine’s economy in notable and far-reaching ways. An educated workforce is of paramount concern to Unum, along with most other Maine employers, and these young scholars are our future workforce. Mitchell Scholars are not just college graduates, they are prepared college graduates. Our investment in the Mitchell Institute has paid tremendous dividends to the students, our company, and the state of Maine overall.”

The Achievers Study promises to provide insights that will refine and improve our programs for Mitchell Scholars and Alumni, and more broadly to support college aspirations, access, and completion in Maine.

In 2012, in partnership with Bowdoin College, the Mitchell Institute launched a pilot study of the factors that influence the achievements of Mitchell Scholar Alumni. Fewer than 6 in 10 college-going high school graduates in Maine (59%) complete a college degree within six years. By comparison, Mitchell Scholars—the majority of whom are first-generation college students or are from lower-income families—achieve a remarkable 85% college graduation rate. One goal of this study is to learn how the Mitchell Institute’s support system can be replicated for more young people in Maine.

Inspired by research at the University of Pennsylvania on black male achievement in higher education, our Achievers Study explores how Mitchell Alumni develop and fulfill college aspirations. Working with Bowdoin professor Ingrid Nelson and students in her fall 2012 sociology course Transitions to Adulthood, we conducted individual interviews with 30 Mitchell Scholar Alumni from across Maine.

Emerging findings from the first round of interviews include:

• Experiences that helped Scholars become well-prepared for college include overcoming a personal challenge, taking early college courses and other academically rigorous courses while in high school, and learning good time management by juggling extracurricular activities, jobs, and family responsibilities while maintaining good grades.

• A number of participants described doing poorly on their first test or paper in college, and how they responded: spending more time studying, seeking out friends who were academically motivated, learning the expectations of college professors and taking advantage of campus tutoring and academic support resources.

• Completing college usually isn’t a goal in itself—Mitchell Scholars see it as a necessary avenue to achieving their larger goals.

• Many Mitchell Alumni find it challenging to link their academic passions with available jobs and familiar career pathways.
