Issue No 25
31st March 2017
Dear Parent/Carer,
It is
hard to
know
where to
begin
with so
much
happening
this term.
With so many trips, sporting
fixtures, curriculum focused events,
intervention and support classes,
House Day, D of E, it would seem
unfair to single out any as they all
contribute in making Trinity school
such a great place to be. That said, I
must draw attention to the opening
ceremony, which was such a special
event to mark the official opening of
the new building. It was wonderful
to share the experience with so
many visitors and the feedback from
the occasion has been so uplifting.
Yet again, the students were an
absolute credit to the school. It was
also so good to share the
experience with many of you and I
just want to take a moment to say
how appreciative we are of your
ongoing support, which you show in
so many ways. Examples include
attendance at events such as the
Year 10 study support and options
evenings. We are also grateful for
those of you are have given time to
helping in the library, serving
tea/coffee at each parent’s evening
and sharing your expertise with
groups of our students. I also want
to thank Friends of Trinity for all
their work in organising special
events, which not only strengthens
the community feel but also raises
invaluable funding for the school.
On a related note, I again want to
thank those parents who have given
to the school fund.
In conclusion, I want to update you
on staffing at Trinity. To date, we
have recruited exceptional teachers
in Chemistry, English, Performing
Arts and Music. We have also
successfully recruited a Deputy
Head this past week from an
impressive field of applicants. I will
of course give you more
information about these teachers in
due time.
We welcome Nicola Johnson who
joins us after Easter and will be
teaching English. I also want to
congratulate Mr Birks-Agnew who
was successfully appointed as Head
of Sixth Form. The recruitment
drive continues with all posts being
advertised via the Times Educational
and the school’s website. On a
more poignant note, we bid farewell
to Mr Barratt. I would like to say a
huge thank you to him, in particular,
for establishing the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at
school, which is no easy task. Miss
Howard, who possesses lots of
experience in this area will be taking
over.
I hope you all manage to have a
restful Easter break.

Trinity Official
Opening
Ceremony
On Friday 24th March Trinity
celebrated the official opening of
our new school building.
It was an amazing day and we were
pleased to welcome many special
guests including the Bishop James of
Rochester, the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael
Fallon MP, members of the DfE,
KCC and local council members,
our school architect, Mr Tate, our
governors and many parents as well
as all our staff and students.
The day started with a lovely
opening service in which Bishop
James blessed the school and all
who will use it. There were
readings from students, Sir Michael
Fallon and local ministers. We also
had an amazing first performance
from the newly formed Rock
Gospel Choir.
There were prayers for both the
recent sad events in Westminster
and for the school.
Education for life in all its fullness
We then had two important and
symbolic events outside – a prayer
balloon release and the planting of
an olive tree, with prayers read by
student council members.
The day continued with
refreshments – and cakes for all the
students provided by the governors
– and many guests received a tour
of the school from our prefects.
The students were also treated to a
fantastic performance and testimony
from Rebirth Dance, a Christian
dance company.
All staff and students received a
commemorative key ring at the end
of the day, and I am sure it is a day
we will remember for a long time to
come.
Reports for Year
7 to 10 Parents will have noticed on the
calendar that Year 8 and 9 reports
were due to be published during
this last term, and that Year 10
reports are due to be published
after the Easter holidays.
We have been reviewing the way
that we do reports as many parents
commented that the reports
published last year gave information
about their child, but not a personal
comment about how their child had
progressed in class throughout the
year. As a result of this feedback
we have redesigned the reports so
that parents will receive progress
data about their child, and also a
brief comment from each of their
child’s teachers about how they
have worked in class during the
year. In addition, form tutors will
comment on the wider
development of students and wider
contributions to Trinity school life.
We have also made the decision to
publish these reports towards the
end of the school year rather than
part way through as this will give
parents a much clearer picture of
progress throughout the whole
school year. Year 10 parents will
receive the results of assessments
currently being undertaken in class
after the Easter holidays; all parents
will receive reports with teacher
and tutor comments in July.
These redesigned reports will be
more detailed and informative and
give parents a much clearer
understanding of how their child is
progressing at school. If you
currently have any concerns about
your child’s progress at school,
please do not hesitate to contact
your child’s form tutor.
Year 10 Extra
Classes and
Mentoring
Year 10 students have been
following a programme this half
term of extra classes to support
them in their GCSE studies. Some
students have also had a mentor
who has been monitoring progress
and achievement in class. This cycle
of interventions has gone very well,
but is coming to an end at the end
of this term. There will be another
programme of extra classes and
mentoring support which will start
again in Term 5 after the results of
Year 10 assessments currently being
Education for life in all its fullness
undertaken have been
published. We are very grateful to
Year 10 parents for their support
and we are confident that we can
continue to rely on the support of
parents in the next cycle of extra
classes and mentoring.
Geography Field
Trip From the 22nd to 24th of March my
fellow students and I embarked on a
grand journey to the unknown
wilderness, otherwise known as
Surrey. This feat was done in aid of
our geography GCSE exams which
are being taken next year. During
the trip we spent three days
learning about and becoming one
with, nature. On the first day of our
endeavours we learnt about the
great mysteries of Surrey’s
woodland comparing the conditions
of both coppiced and mature
woodland. This was received well by
most, however, the two to three-
hour write ups that followed were
not taken to as kindly. At night we
managed to avoid camping and
instead chose to lodge in the
residence of the quaint Juniper hall.
The next day was met with a
welcoming sunrise to brighten up
the morning and consequentially the
coming day. Alas it seemed that
many of us were still fatigued from
the night prior. Consequently, some
caffeine was needed to get many
through day two. This day involved
looking at the course of the River
Tillingbourne and exploring how it
changed at different areas. Some of
us got wet, some got cold, but none
drowned so I’d call it a successful
day. Leading to our final day in the
wild; day three saw us enter the
urban jungle of Leatherhead to
further understand urban
development.
Leatherhead itself isn’t the most
exciting place in the world however
it did have a Greggs. Upon finishing
this final task, we were able to call
our jaunt to an end. We packed
home with many accomplished goals
and welcomed the weekend.
Daniel Hopper - Year 10
Instrumental
Music/Drama
Tuition Students at Trinity have the
wonderful opportunity to learn a
musical instrument with a private
tutor during school time; this is in
addition to their class music lessons.
Research indicates that students
who study instrumental music often
achieve higher academic results in
other subjects, gain in self-
confidence and have a greater
connection to each other and the
world around them.
Lessons are on a weekly basis and
can either be a fixed time: before
school, after school, break or lunch,
or will rotate weekly during lesson
times to ensure learning is not
hindered in any subject. Charges
for lessons are at the discretion
of each teacher, however they
average around £17 per half
hour for an individual lesson.
Instrumental music lessons are
charged by the school term and are
payable directly to your
instrumental teacher.
Lesson schedules and rooms are
displayed on the lower ground
music display board and students
are responsible for attending their
instrumental lessons at the correct
times. As part of their tuition,
students taking instrumental or
singing lessons are expected to
participate in appropriate Trinity
music ensembles.
To sign up, or for more information
please contact the preferred
teacher directly on the email
address which can be found at the
end of this newsletter.
I welcome and look forward to you
and your child becoming involved in
the many varied aspects of the
performing arts programmes
provided by Trinity.

NACE Poetry
Competition You may recall that we entered a
number of poems written by our
G&T English students into a national
poetry competition earlier this year;
this is a yearly competition run by
NACE, the National Association for
Able Children in Education. Students
were asked to write a poem around
the theme of ‘New Beginnings’.
I am delighted to tell you that two
of our entries have been shortlisted
Education for life in all its fullness
in the Secondary Category, those
written by Isla and Samantha in Year
9. They have both kindly allowed
me to share their work with you
and, as you can see, they are both
exceptional and thought provoking
entries.
The final winners and runners-up
are being announced at the end of
April so we wish both Isla and
Samantha every success in the
competition!

News - Library
and Twitter! I would like to publicly thank the
many parents who have worked
tirelessly to bring our library into
being; they have been doing so since
the start of the year and continue to
do so. A special thanks to Helen
Sullivan - I couldn’t have done this
without you. Between them they
have covered and organised several
thousand books and we are now
able to share those books with the
students. I would also like to thank
those that have so kindly donated
books to us, there have been so
many and we are incredibly grateful.
Year 7 students shall be taking out
their first Accelerated Reader books
during the first weeks back after the
break. I shall keep you posted with
updates which leads me into my
next exciting development…
The English department now has its
own Twitter feed to keep you up to

New Beginnings by
Isla Bence The world has changed; we live in
fear
of not communicating or being clear
There are touchscreens and emails
but never a face
We are losing contact with the
human race
My hair may be grey, my knowledge
is vast
But this world of technology didn’t
live in my past
I want to evolve and learn to email
My fear is growing deeper and I’m
growing frail
Chatting has long gone, we rely on
the iPad
When did we stop talking, it’s making
me sad
I sit at the bus stop watching a screen
10 mins till the arrival of number 13
Today I am starting a lesson for IT
Learning to email, it’s all free
Maybe I will be a silver surfer one day
But my new beginning starts this way
My palms are sweating, I will make
new friends
But I’m determined to have a go and
stay till the end.
And if nothing else goes in I will enjoy
the tea
Chatting with the old folk and just
being me.
Sweet Tomorrows by
Samantha Hurst I look beyond the meadow, and too
beyond the hill.
Tomorrow is still hidden; hidden
from me still.
I cannot wait on tomorrow or know
what it shall be,
Still I must move forward, the
unknown will not limit me.
I watch as new buds bloom, as the
older petals fall,
As leaves turn colour on the trees,
and cold wind stills them all.
I used to ask the question,
‘What happens when tomorrow
starts without me?’
If the sun should rise and meet your
eyes, all filled with tears for me.
But soon I realised I must make
something of what I have,
I’d be a fool to let it slip away,
As my best preparation for
tomorrow,
Is doing my best today.
So, what if it starts without me?
Beyond the meadows and too
beyond the hill.
Tomorrow may still be hidden, but
tomorrow I shall still fulfil.
Cryptography
Club After the Easter holidays we are
starting a cryptography
club. Cryptography is the science of
codebreaking (and making) for the
Education for life in all its fullness
purpose of secure
communication. It is a really
fascinating subject, a good
enrichment activity and a great
example of how mathematics is
used in the real world. Please do
encourage your child to come along
if you think they would enjoy
it! Starting from 26th April we will
meet every Wednesday after school
in S7, speak to Mr J Taylor for more
information. Also, make sure to
have a look at the attached poster
and see if you can crack the first
code!
School Uniform We remind students that they may
after the Easter break wear summer
uniform. Girls can opt for the
summer dress with skin coloured
tights or black ankle socks or kilt
with black ankle socks. Students
may wear short sleeve shirts if they
wish. Students may continue to
remove their blazers during lesson
time but must wear them to and
from school and when moving
around the school building. Please
ensure a full length tie is worn, the
tip of the tie should end in the
middle of a child’s belt buckle or
waistband.

Chaplaincy:
Then the angel spoke to the women.
“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you
are looking for Jesus, who was
crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen
from the dead, just as he said would
happen.
Matthew 28:5-6
Easter is nearly here, and though it
might not feel like more than 5
minutes since Christmas, it is an
opportunity to spend time together
and to think about what Jesus did
for us all those years ago. It’s
amazing how God’s plan to save us
and Jesus’ sacrifice affect our lives,
two thousand years later.
I wish you all a very Happy Easter
and a wonderful holiday.
Giving thanks for:
Our wonderful official
opening ceremony
All our dedicated staff,
governors and supporters
Praying for:
A good end to the term and
a restful Easter holiday
A chance for all to reflect
on the joy and gift of Easter
