1. Technology overview

○ Utilizing EMG signals from teeth-clenching, users are able

to operate computers, electronic devices and power

wheelchairs. (EMG:bioelectric signal generated by muscle

use)

○ Using this technology, commercial products can be

developed for the various applications.

○ Short-term Target products :

Wireless control power wheelchairs, PW control modules,

User training games

○ Long-term Target products :

Games, information input devices, computers

442. Handicapped in the spinal cord

○ The spinal cord : Located in spine. Between the cervical vertebrae 1

and the lumbar 1, 2. Major data path between brain and body.

○ Heavily handicapped in spinal cord : The spinal cord in no.4 or no.5

of the cervical vertebrae is damaged, and can’t use both legs and

hands

===

○ Very limited to do rehabilitation

○ Required to have indirect control of mobility aids or IT devices

3. Comparison with the others

Power wheelchair control using breath : Breath is not related

with power wheelchair directly. Taking long time to use it.

Our technology is using the movement of teeth and

chin(teeth-clenching), and it gives direct control to the

moving direction of power wheelchair. In addition,

supporter can control power wheelchair for the user within

some distance.

Input Devices

Who hasn't wished for more freedom? Our input

devices let you control your wheelchair just as

you like, making you independent and mobile

again.

Suck and blow controlThe wheelchair remains directly steerable; due to the continued mode, a signal is only required for a necessary change of direction.Chin controlThe complete chin control can be moved behind the seat by means of a swivel arm; swiveling, On/Off and MODE are activated by means of a separate multifunction switchFoot controlCan be used in 3-switch or 5-switch mode; the continued mode makes control of the wheelchair easier for the user; all functions can be activated.5-button keyboard controlLarge-surface touch sensors for MODE and driving direction as 5-switch mode.Buddy ButtonFreely positionable function/driving keys for entering driving signals and/or menu navigation.Calibratable mini joystickCalibration can be activated at any time by the user; self-control by means of force vectors and movement vectors display on the LCD.

3.6 Comparison(Breath and EMG-teeth)

○ Practice of heavily handicapped people in

spinal cord (no.4 or no.5 of the cervical

vertebrae is damaged, and can’t use both

legs and hands). 10 people in tests.

○ Speed of powerchair : 0.4m / sec

○ Test : Passing test path, and checking the

time and driving suite errors

If the user is out of the path more than 3

times, don’t count in test results(2 people)

4.1 EMG : ElectroMyoGram)

EMG is bio-electric signal generated by using muscles

- Measured with various noise. Stable differential signal.

- Easy to acquire from skin.

- Signal processing is easier than

eyeball-movement or brain waves
