1. Try playing as a duet with the bass part on page 1.2. Listen to Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" for a great example of simple rhythmic blues ideas just like this exercise.

AESTHETICS OF SIGHTREADING

1. Mentally study the music from beginning to end before playing it.2. Break the piece up into sections before playing. Label each section with

A, B, C, etc. if necessary.3. Mentally or literally map out how you will interpret the notes, thinking of

the musical result of using different options for interpreting the music. For example, playing with a pick may be brighter and edgier than the round warm sound you could get from playing with your thumb.

4. Decide on ways to play the notes rather than playing them arbitrarily:I. Choose dynamics — be extremely descriptive

*many big bands go as far as to coordinate cutoffs on the ends of notes.i. general dynamic level for each section (evaluate multiple options)ii. add hairpins (crescendos and decrescendos)iii. subito F

II. add articulation to the notes and chords*eventually you should be able to add things like without writing them in, however, it’s important to write this stuff in until you can do it from rote.

i. single notes - staccatoii. single notes - marcato — usually more punchy and heavy than

regular staccato5. single notes - legato6. single notes - slurred staccato7. single notes - tenuto (notes are longer and/or louder and/or detache)8. single notes - mixture of legato and staccato9. single notes - with thumb or finger10.single notes - with pick11.single notes - tremolo12.single notes - vibrato13.single notes - detache14.single notes - ornamentation (trills, mordents, turns)15.chords - roll with fingers16.chords - pinch with fingers17.chords - brush with fingers18. chords - brush with thumb19.chords - play with pick20.chords - up roll/rake with pick21. chords - down roll/rake with
