Open Data, Big Data, External and Explicit Structured Data

Size– Yahoo CRM Cube (24Tb)– Library data – The U.S. Library of Congress Web Capture team claims that "As of April 2011, the

Library has collected about 235 terabytes of data" and that it adds about 5 terabytes per month.[1]

– Online databases – Ancestry.com claims approximately 600 TB of genealogical data with the inclusion of US Census data from 1790 to 1930.[2]

– Encyclopedia – Wikipedia's January 2010 raw data uses a 5.87 terabyte dump.[9]

– Climate science – In 2010, Germany's Climate Research Centre (DKRZ) was generating 10,000 TB of data per year

– The first 20 years worth of observations by the Hubble Space Telescope has amassed more than 45 terabytes of data.[11]

Variation in Schema- Industry Codes (ANZIC etc)- The Package problem, Changes

Variation in Definition – 01/04/2012– BOM Windspeed on Land :Knts to Kmh

Open Data, Big Data, External and Explicit UnStructured Knowledge

• Reading the “Interwebs”• Twitter has its own problems• The Semantic Web is one approach

. RDF format (Tim Berners-Lee){Mike | Hosts | Meeting}

• Babelfish for the web.

Other Approaches

• Sentiment Analysis/Voice of Customer• Semantic Inference – Syntax based equivalents

– “Covers motors up to 15yo”– “Excludes motors over 15yo”

• Autoresponders for Twitter, Help Desk• Replace Order Entry Application with a robot

which uses Emails in and out to negotiate.

What is the role of Metadata?

• Taxonomy • “Clarify Control and Operations Point”

– “Electronic solution to be considered”– “Careful selection of roles for Team personnel”

• Tag=Review of Training, Skills or Knowledge• We can do better – Enterprise Search/

Autotagging

Page 13: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Back off the power, Henry !• “The movement of practical knowledge

between people”• Possible Outcomes

– Default tag with SME override,– Advise SME, – Dialogue Training – 2 –way

• That is the KM Solution• Without some form of Metadata, Can you

direct new incoming external open big knowledge to those who need to know?

Page 14: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Knowledge ContextThe Challenge of our Age

• GRI Project – ARC Research• Melbourne based. Microsoft/Fuji Xerox

support• To use semantic processing to supplement /

replace quantitative survey with text• To analyse and define “Materiality”

Page 15: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Knowledge Context• GRI Conversation (SA Water Treatment Plants)

Me GRI

Outfall to Sea (ML):

You have 0 for Aldinga ?

Aldinga discharges to Land

You have 0 for Bolivar High Salinity?

That discharges to Bolivar Low Salinity

Electricity Used (kwh):

Is it Gross or Net?

Don’t Understand

Plants have Methane Capture and Power Generation supplying a large part of our needs

Context determines Information out of Data

Page 16: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Research Project• Sharing Knowledge means you need to capture

context so that you share Understanding.• What is the practical Metadata for context?

• Approximate AUS/USD rate tomorrow?– Anni 1.05 – Mike 1.06– Actual 1.055

Yesterday

Today

Little Data

Page 17: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Research Project

• The Cat Sat on the Mat• White Men can’t Jump• Arvo is the Finnish High Jump Champion with

a jump of 2.9m• Negation of which statement?• Regime for a possible new context

Page 18: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Research Project• Truth /Validity/Trust indicator as Metadata• What is Truth?

AUS/USD rate tomorrow?

– Anni 1.05 – Mike 1.06– Actual 1.055

• Rules of evidence / Last Validated or Confirmed/By whom• Is all our current Knowledge proven?

• How do we validate Open Big Knowledge for our own use ?• What practical Knowledge Metadata contributes to safe re-use.• Apply KM to hierarchy of contexts, taxonomy schema

• Any collaborators?• Any sponsors?

Page 19: Open Research - collaboration and partnership to create new opportunities

Summary

• Intro to KM• Intro to Big Data, particularly Unstructured• Intro to Natural Language Processing, KM• Little Data, Knowledge Context• Research Project around Metadata for that.
