Dear brothers in Malaysia,

Respected Brother Mr. Anwar Ibrahim and brothers in People’s Justice Party, May Allah protect

them all,

Respected Brother Sheikh Abdul Hadi Bin Haj Awang and brothers in Islamic Party, May Allah

protect them all,

Respected Brothers in Chinese Association,

I greet you with the Islamic salutation. May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you!!

I take this opportunity to extend the most beautiful greetings and the purest regards to you and pray to

Almighty Allah to show you the right path in all your affairs, guide your steps, help you achieve more of

goodness and righteousness for the benefit of Islam and Muslims in general and the sisterly Malaysia in

particular, and to keep them all under His care and attention, give them peace and help them achieve

development and progress and propagate social justice.

My dear brothers,

Malaysia has a great place in our hearts and we sincerely love its people. Malaysia is our hope to achieve

a moderate, civilized, advanced, contemporary Islamic model.

We have followed up its renaissance ever since it began. We followed up its sons who came from Malay

to Al-Azhar, and we are still following up the youth of ABIM and Islamic Party and the supporters of the

call towards Islam and towards development and peace.

We were dismayed by the split that occurred in the past in UMNO Party followed by serious and

unfortunate abuses faced by Mujahid Brother Mr. Anwar Ibrahim who had become the second person in

Malaysia, as he was the party’s Vice President as well as Deputy Prime Minister. We seek reward from

Allah for the plight and falsehoods he was subjected to, and which were exposed later on so that Allah

justifies truth and proves falsehood as false, distasteful though it be to those in guilt.

A lot of Malaysians took position against this blatant falsification and this fraudulent falsehood. Among

them was the courageous Islamic Party which stood by truth and stood beside the People’s Justice Party

headed by Mr. Anwar’s wife. Chinese Association also allied with them rejecting the fraud and

fabrication.

We, the Islamists in Arab world and we, at World Federation of Muslim Scholars, were so happy and

pleased with the position taken by the Malaysian Front which united and helped one another in

righteousness and piety and did never cooperate on sin and rancor, insisting to build and not to destruct

and to stick together and not to divide. It vowed to support Anwar Ibrahim and oppose those who did

injustice to him with their lies and falsehoods until Allah helped the truth and exposed the falsehood to

the world.

That’s why we were very happy by the stance taken by this front which allied with Anwar Ibrahim,

supporting him in his position. This front has been taking steady steps with a straight approach to achieve

Malaysia’s blessed goals in past years. It did not back off or refrain from this united stance. It continued

with this solidarity, cohesion, consultation and constructive cooperation, knowing that “Allah helps those

who are united” and “Allah is the third among two partners if they are united and cooperate with each

other”. But if they oppose each other or a breach of trust occurs between them, “Satan comes in between

them”.

Hence we emphasize the importance of unity in Islam which is well known to you. This religion is based

on the belief in oneness of Allah and oneness of the people in their goals and acts. “This community of

yours is one community, and I am your Lord; so hold Me alone in fear” (Al-Muminun: 52). That’s

why Allah has made it a religious obligation and it is a realistic need too. Allah says’ “And hold fast, all

together, by the rope (which Allah stretches out for you) and be not divided among yourselves” (Al-

i-Imran: 159). “Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin

and rancor” (Al-Ma’ida: 2).

The Holy Qur’an has also warned strongly against division and disunion. Describing the magnitude of its

criminality, Allah says, “Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into

disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty” (Al-i-Imran: 105). Also,

Allah has described its grave worldly implications, saying, “And fall into no disputes, lest ye falter and

are no longer held in awe” (Al-Anfal: 46). Prophet Mohammad, Peace be Upon Him, said, “Do not

create divisions amongst you, for your predecessors perished after they created divisions”. Al-Bukhari has

narrated this Hadith.

Because of this great principle, Prophet Aaron kept patience after his people started worshipping calf,

fearing division that could destroy them and tear them apart. Quoting Prophet Aaron’s words while he

was talking to Prophet Moses, Peace be Upon Him, Allah says in Holy Qur’an, “Aaron replied: O son of

my mother! Seize me not by my beard nor by the hair of my head! Truly I feared lest thou shouldst

say, ‘Thou has caused a division among the children of Israel, and thou didst not respect my word”

(Ta-Ha: 94).

These verses of the Holy Qur’an and quotes from Prophet Mohammad’s Hadith are well known to you.

Also you are well versed with the effects of unity and unison and consequences of division and disunion

experienced by previous nations as well as our Islamic nation. We only wanted to remind you, as

reminding is always beneficial for the believers. Allah says in Holy Qur’an, “Keep on exhorting them,

for exhortation benefits the believers” (Adh-Dhariyat: 55). Also, we wanted to offer advice which was

taught to us by Prophet Mohammad, Peace be Upon Him, when he said, “Religion is all about being

Page 3: Open Letter from Prof. Yusuf Al Qaradawi

sincere in offering advice”, so we (companions of Prophet) asked: To who O Prophet of Allah? The

Prophet replied: “To Allah, His Prophet, His Book, and to Muslim leaders and common Muslims”.

Muslim has narrated this Hadith.

So there is no Muslim who is too small to offer an advice and there is no Muslim who is too big to be

given an advice.

We know that one can avoid failure in this world and hereafter only by exhorting one another to hold fast

to the truth and to steadfastness. As Allah says, “I swear by the passage of Time! Man is surely in a

state of loss. Except for those who believe and do good deeds and exhort one another to hold fast to

the truth and who exhort one another to steadfastness.” (Surah Al-Asr)

Based on this, I sincerely appeal you, O Malaysian brothers, by God, from the core of a lover’s heart,

along with supporting Sharia and logical substantiations, to continue what you were doing and not to

deviate from it. Be united and don’t create divisions. Remain cohesive and don’t break up into many. Be

mutually supportive and do not disintegrate. Because a Muslim is like a building for the other Muslim;

each block of it binds the other.

I appeal you for the sake of Allah and in the interest of Islam and Muslims and also in the interest of all

sections of Malaysian people to be united in one rank, like a solid cemented structure and to solve all your

minor problems that stand in your way by yourself and through mutual understanding, because you

represent the bright future of Malaysia.

I advise you to abide by the agreements and contracts reached by you among yourselves and not to cancel

them, because Allah says, “O Ye who believe! Fulfill all your obligations” (Al-Ma’ida: 1). And Allah

says in another place in Holy Qur’an, “Fulfill every promise, for every promise will be enquired into

(on the Day of Judgment)” (Al-Isra: 34).

I advise you to study all outstanding issues through consultative committees to be formed from the

constituent parties of the Front, because consultation leads to goodness. “One who seeks goodness

doesn’t fail, and one who consults doesn’t rue”. This was the method adopted by Prophet Mohammad,

Peace be Upon Him, and his noble companions. Allah says, “They conduct their affairs by mutual

consultation”. (Ash-Shura: 38) And Allah ordered his Prophet the same as He said in Holy Qur’an,

“Consult them in the conduct of affairs” (Al-i-Imran: 159).

I believe that Anwar Ibrahim, with his history, experience, wisdom, struggle, patience, endurance since

his early youth till today and for the love he gets from the kindly people of Malaysia, whether they are

Malaysians or Chinese, deservers to be on top of the list to head the government and to be at the helm of

the country’s leadership. He is the right person to be in this top position and he is capable of performing

what is required at this juncture for the sake of Malaysia’s development and progress in all aspects. This

is what you have agreed upon in the past.

All the advocates of truth must help him and stand by him so that they earn Almighty Allah’s help. As

Allah says, “Allah will certainly help those who help His cause. Verily Allah is immensely Strong

and overwhelmingly Mighty” (Al-Hajj: 40).

I stand by my scholar brothers who love you and pray for your help and support and are waiting for the

good news of unity, harmony and concord among the brothers at the earliest.

I advice you O my brothers and stress that you remain united in one bloc in such a manner that each one

of you loves, for his brother, what he loves for himself and hates for him what he hates for himself. That

is where all the goodness lies for you, your brothers, your country and all those who love you. Do not

allow division to enter your ranks, because it leads only to destruction and devastation.

The Muslims around the world, whether in the east or the west and whether in Arab countries or abroad,

are behind you. They support you, commend you and pray for you. And before all that, you have

Almighty Allah’s support and help. “Every help comes from Allah alone. Surely Allah is Mighty and

Wise” (Al-Anfal: 10).

May Allah bless you and guide you to do what is good and wise for you, your people and your country in

your religious and worldly affairs. May He unite you on the right path, widen your means of livelihood,

provide you with food lest you go hungry and save you from fear.

(O Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way) (Al-

Kahf: 10)

May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you!!
