    OPEN HOUSE

    Pilot

    ACT ONE

    FADE IN:

    INT. KARENS OFFICE - DAY

    KAREN, an attractive woman in her mid-40s, sits at herdesk talking on the phone. She holds a paper in her otherhand.

    KAREN(into phone)

    I need this fixed right away. No,

    its not just a little typo,Penny. New appraisal shows poofof value. Poof of value?

    (beat)Just get it done.

    She hangs up the phone. JOSE (30s) knocks, then enters.

    JOSEMax said you wanted to see me,seorita?

    KAREN

    Yes, seor. Please, have a seat.

    Jose sits hesitantly.

    KAREN (CONTD)Jose, youre a really great guy --

    JOSE(panicked)

    Oh, no. Im being fired. Please,chiquitita, one more chance! I begof you! I have my little nios totake care of.

    KARENYouve been with this company forsix months and havent even listeda house. Then, today I get a callfrom one of your clients. Sheasked you to find out where theproperty line ends on the houseshes interested in buying.

    JOSEYes?

    KARENAnd you told her to watch theneighbors cut the grass.

    JOSE(clueless)

    Yes?

    KARENLook, all my agents have workedvery hard to get where they are. Itry to keep this office as stress-free as possible. I have my ex-husband out of my life, mydaughter left for college lastmonth; everything in my world is

    great right now. The last thing Ineed is an unproductive agent.

    JOSECan you write me a letter ofrecommendation?

    KARENYoure clearly not grasping thiswhole fired concept, are you?

    JOSEJust say something nice. Like,

    Your company would be veryfortunate to have Jose Garcia workfor you.

    KARENId be fortunate to have JoseGarcia work for me.

    MAX, a decent looking guy approaching 40, jogs into Karensoffice wearing a track suit.

    He pauses, looks at Jose, then back at Karen.

    MAXYou didnt fire him yet?

    Jose lets out a soft whimper, then exits.

    KARENI told you to fire him.

    MAXI pretty much just did.

    MAXGreat movie.

    (off her look)Im training for that 5K Imrunning next Sunday.

    KARENWell good luck.

    She pats his belly.

    Maxs cell phone RINGS. He answers it.

    MAX

    (into phone)Hey, baby. Yeah, Im with herright now...Is everything okay?...Well be right there.

    Max hangs up.

    MAX (CONTD)It was your sister. Your moms inthe hospital.

    Off their concerned looks --

    INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM - DAY

    Karen and NADINE sit next to each other. Nadine is about 5years younger than her sister. Shes very mellow andrelaxed. Semi-hippie. Max sits in a chair near them. He isflipping through an AARP magazine.

    KAREN(genuinely concerned)

    God, a broken hip.

    NADINE

    I know. So old lady-like.

    KARENGetting out of the bathtub, too. Iknew we should have gotten her oneof those walk-in showers.

    NADINEBathtub incident my ass. Thatwoman was wasted at 9:45 on aTuesday morning.

    MAX(from behind themagazine)

    Happy Hour with Regis and Kelly.

    KARENMom doesnt drink like that.

    MAXObviously youve never seen her atone of our keggers.

    INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - LATER

    An older woman in her mid-60s lies in bed sleeping. Thisis HAZEL.

    A NURSE enters. Shes way too chipper for Hazels taste.

    NURSE(whispering)

    Hazel. Hazel?

    She doesnt wake up. The nurse grabs the bed remote andslowly rotates Hazel upright.

    Gravity catches Hazels head and she suddenly awakens. Shepicks up the claw grabber designed for the elderly andholds it as a weapon.

    NURSE (CONTD)Its alright. Its just yournurse, Hazel. You have a verypretty name.

    HAZELBite me.

    NURSE

    I know youre tired, but yourefamily is on their way in to seeyou.

    Hazel snatches the remote from the nurse and reclines back.

    HAZELIm sleeping.

    Karen, Nadine, and Max enter.

    NURSEIll leave you all alone.

    She exits. The girls approach Hazels bed. Max sits in achair.

    After what seems like a touching moment of the daughtersadmiring their mother --

    NADINEShe looks dead.

    DR. KLINE enters.

    DR. KLINENadine?

    KARENHow is she doing, Dr. Kline?

    DR. KLINEShe just came out of surgery, soshell probably be a little loopyonce she wakes up.

    NADINEProbably from the alcohol.

    KARENStop it, Nadine.

    DR. KLINE

    Anyway, we did a full hipreplacement, and she should bedischarged within 48 hours.

    KARENThats great news.

    DR. KLINEWe also recommend a rehabilitationcenter after shes released.

    KARENPhysical therapy?

    DR. KLINENo, for the alcohol.

    NADINEIm just happy shes alright.

    DR. KLINEIts a good thing you found herwhen you did.

    DR. KLINEActually, for your motherssafety, I would advise a differentsolution.

    NADINEWhatever it is, doctor. I would doanything for my mom.

    DR. KLINE

    She shouldnt live alone anymore.

    Nadine turns in horror to Karen.

    NADINEI think Ill let my older sisterhandle this one.

    KARENNo. Oh no. Absolutely not.

    She looks to her family for help. They say nothing.

    KAREN (CONTD)You dont understand, doctor.I...my mom would want her freedom.I want my freedom. I dont knowif...I couldnt take it. I love mymom, but she...shes like Satan ina muumuu.

    HAZELI heard that.

    Off Karens confused face --

    FADE IN:

    INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

    Hazel enters with her walker.

    HAZELNeed any help back there, Karen?

    KARENNo, mom. I got it.

    Karen enters dragging a luggage cart full of bags. She isclearly frustrated with Hazel.

    HAZEL

    That thing heavy?

    KARENNope. Menopause has not onlygraced me with a mustache, but Ihave twice the strength I used to.

    HAZELReally? I guess you learnsomething new about your childrenevery day. Even after 45 years.

    Hazel sits.

    KARENI am 44 years old.

    HAZELSame thing.

    KARENNo, mom, its not the same thing.If it were the same thing I wouldbe 45. But Im not, Im 44.

    HAZEL

    And a half.

    KARENAnd a half. You know, Im about ahalf a second from -

    Hazel yawns loudly.

    HAZELWhat was that, dear?

    KARENNothing. So are you glad to be outof the hospital and stayingsomewhere more comfortable?

    HAZELOf course I am. That place was anightmare. It was so depressing. Ithink it was because of all theold people.

    KARENIm glad, mom.

    HAZELMe too. Anyplace is better thanthat rotten pit of hell.

    She looks around with a bit of a sour face.

    KARENLook, if you dont like it hereIm sure we can make arrangementsfor something else. No one isforcing you to stay, trust me.

    HAZELHoney, that thought never evencrossed my mind.

    Hazel sneezes then stands and heads to her luggage.

    KARENYou alright?

    HAZELYeah, Im just not used to dust.

    KARENMom...

    HAZELOh, I didnt mean anything bythat. Its just that the nursinghome was so clean. Im perfectly

    happy staying here with myfavorite daughter.

    Hazel searches through her bags.

    KARENYour favorite?

    KARENI dont know. Why dont you calland ask her?

    HAZELIts probably not a good idea forme to walk all the way into thekitchen to use the phone. Thedoctor said to put no unneededpressure on my recovering hip.

    She rummages through more bags, violently tossing heavyones onto the couch.

    HAZEL (CONTD)

    Now where the hell is my hardcandy?

    KARENTake it easy. I put it in yourpurse.

    HAZELIn my purse? Dont you know thathard candy will melt in a purse?Especially one with a short strapwhere the candy is so close to theheat of my armpit.

    KARENIm sorry. Next time yourpersistent cough kicks in and youhave nothing to soothe yourthroat, Ill just sit back andwatch you hack up a lung.

    HAZELI dont believe I like your tone.

    KARENOkay, mom. What do you say we go

    down to Megans old room and getyou unpacked?

    HAZELMegans room? You said I would bestaying in your room.

    KARENHow could I forget?

    HAZELSorry. There are 365 days in theyear. How was I supposed to knowthe night I need something

    important would be the one nightyou actually have a date?

    KARENSomething important? You called meall the way up there for asweatshirt.

    HAZELRight. My maroon sweatshirt withthe kittens on it. And you saidCertainly. And when you move inwith me, you can have my bed,

    too.

    KARENI believe my exact words were:Sure mom, and when you move inwith me, why dont I just give upmy bed, too?

    HAZELSee.

    KARENI left in the middle of a

    wonderful date for nothing.

    HAZELIts my favorite sweatshirt. Wellit was my favorite sweatshirtuntil it mysteriously caught onfire.

    KARENIm sorry, mom.

    HAZELNo, its fine. Ill just have todeal with a dangerous bed and abathroom I may or may not get toin time.

    KARENDamn it, mom. Now youre making mefeel bad.

    (beat)You can have my room.

    HAZELYoure a great daughter, Karen,you know that?

    KARENNo, Im just a sucker. Now what doyou say we go into my - I meanyour room and get you settled in?

    HAZELWell, Dr. Phil is almost on. Youknow its my favorite program.

    She grabs the remote off the night stand and flicks on theTV across the room.

    KARENFine. You stay there. Ill unpackfor you.

    Karen struggles to push the heavy cart down the hall.

    HAZELYou sure you dont need any helpwith that?

    KARENAnd how could you possibly help mewith this?

    HAZELWell for one, it would be mucheasier to push if you lifted thebreaks off the back wheels.

    She does so, then exits with ease.

    HAZELShe still falls for that migrainebit.

    INT. KITCHEN - DAY

    Hazel is standing at the counter icing a cake. Karenenters.

    KARENGood morning, mom. What are youdoing?

    HAZELLaundry.

    KARENBaking a cake at eight in themorning?

    HAZELI just figured after all thetrouble I put you throughyesterday Id do something nice inreturn. So I made your favorite,German chocolate with walnut

    sprinkles.

    KARENI appreciate the gesture. Butthats Nadines favorite. No bigdeal though; well eat it.

    HAZELWell actually, we might as wellsave it. Didnt I mention yoursister was stopping over thismorning before church?

    KARENNo, you didnt. Wait, beforechurch? Since when did Nadinestart going to church?

    HAZELShes always been a very religiousperson.

    KARENWhat? I had no idea they werehaving problems. Im always keptout of the loop on these kind ofthings.

    HAZELDont feel badly, Karen. We justfeel that as a family, youre notone to handle crisis very well.

    KARENI let you move in here, didnt I?

    The DOORBELL RINGS.

    HAZELThats Nadine. Remember, dont saya word.

    They exit to --

    INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

    Hazel and Karen enter. Hazel sets the cake down on thetable then heads to the front door.

    HAZELAnd please dont bring up thechurch thing.

    KARENThats just so unlike her. Shehasnt gone to mass since juniorhigh.

    HAZELMaybe so. But lets just be gladshes finally gone back to hergood, old fashioned Catholicroots.

    Hazel opens the door. Nadine stands there wearing atricivara.

    NADINEMorning, mom.

    HAZELMy goodness, what are you wearing?

    NADINEIm headed off to temple. Wouldyou like to walk with me down theNoble Eightfold Path?

    HAZELTemple? I baked you a cake for youto take to a Catholic church andnow youre going to temple? Whatsthe meaning of this?

    NADINEIts okay, mom. Buddhists eatcake, too.

    HAZELWell no Buddhists are eating mycake. Oh my chest is tensing up. Icant handle it.

    KARENWill you calm down? Nadine is agrown woman and can choose to be a

    part of any religion. Howeverfashionably hideous it may be.

    HAZELThis is an abomination of God. Ineed to go lie down.

    Hazel exits holding her chest.

    KARENGreat, now Im going to have todeal with her cardiac episode allday. Buddhism? What were you

    thinking?

    NADINEChill out. Its one of my ideasfor that costume party theyrehaving at my work next Fridaynight. I knew shed freak so Idecided to have a little fun withit.

    Nadine takes off her costume to reveal cut-up jeans and ablack t-shirt with a skull print.

    KARENYoure terrible.

    NADINEI know. Hey, theres somethingIve been meaning to talk to youabout. It has to do with me andMax.

    The two women sit on the couch.

    KARENOkay?

    NADINEWell, we started couples therapy

    last week and its been goingpretty well, but theres stillsomething Im not quite sureabout. You and Max are businesspartners; have you noticedanything off about him at theoffice lately?

    KARENOff is normal for him. Why?

    NADINEEvery night after work for the

    past month or so, hes been cominghome sober.

    KARENAnd?

    NADINEAnd? This is Max were talkingabout. He always stops for drinksafter work. But now, hes cominghome sober because instead ofdrinking, hes out having sex!

    KARENThats ridiculous. I think yourereading too far into it.

    NADINEI dont know Karen, hes just beenacting so weird lately. Even moreso than usual. Its gotta be somecheap little whore.

    KARENIts nice to hear youve solvedall your marital issues.

    NADINEYeah. Well, Im out of here.Wheres that cake mom promised me?

    KAREN

    On the table.

    NADINEHopefully the women at church likeit.

    KARENYoure really going? And in that?

    NADINEI told you: its a costume. Goodluck at your open house.

    KARENSure.

    Nadine exits.

    KAREN (CONTD)And I wasnt talking about thecostume.

    INT. OPEN HOUSE - KITCHEN - DAY

    Max enters from the rear of the room wearing jogging pants

    with no shirt. He has a towel wrapped around his neck. Helimps to the table and sits down. He then slams his footonto the table and checks out the bottom of it. A blister.He swabs some rubbing alcohol on it and winces in pain.

    Then, Max searches for something. A band-aid -- the box ison the counter behind him. Not wanting to get up, he leansbackward and stretches to reach it.

    STEVE enters.

    STEVEYo, my man!

    This startles Max and he wildly tips back in his chair andcrashes to the ground. Steve laughs but comes over to helphim up.

    STEVE (CONTD)Are you alright?

    MAXDamn it, Steve. Who the hellinvited you?

    STEVEThis is an open house, right? Imlooking at it for some out of townclients.

    Max stands.

    STEVE (CONTD)Wait a minute, did you shower atyour open house house?

    MAXDo it all the time. No one knowsthe difference.

    Max sits and begins treating his wound.

    STEVE

    Since when did the big boss startdoing open houses?

    MAXSince we lost three agents thisweek.

    Max winces again.

    STEVEFrom your marathon today, huh?Looks like someone isnt the manhe once was.

    MAX(indicating the shoeson the chair next tohim)

    Its these damn shoes.

    Steve looks at them.

    STEVETheres your problem right there.No jelly-bellies. Theyre what mygirls call them. Shoe inserts.

    CUT TO:

    INT. OPEN HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

    Karen enters with files in her hands. She cannot hear whatis being said in the other room though.

    STEVE (O.C.)Here, try mine. Youll be inheaven.

    Karen approaches the door and hears Max talking.

    MAX (O.C.)Fine, but youre going to have todo it for me; my back is on fire.

    She stops and listens intently.

    MAX (O.C.) (CONTD)Well, cmon. Take them offalready.

    Karen doesnt know what to think.

    MAX (CONTD)

    (struggling)Its a little tight...Cmon, push.

    HER EYES LIGHT UP. She cant believe what shes hearing.

    CUT TO:

    INT. OPEN HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

    Steve is kneeling in front of a standing Max, pushing theshoe onto Maxs foot. They finally get it in and Max takesa big sigh of relief.

    CUT TO:

    INT. OPEN HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

    Karen stands there in horror and disgust.

    MAX (O.C.)Oh that feels so good.

    Karen appears even more sickened. She contemplates what todo.

    MAX (O.C.) (CONTD)Its firm and yet squishy at thesame time. Youre right, this isheaven.

    STEVESee, I told you youd love it.

    Karens eyes are now bulging! A man!? She opens theswinging door ever so slightly.

    From her P.O.V. -- Max is standing with his bare back toher. Down in front of him we can see part of Steves head.

    Karen is trembling. She immediately closes the door.

    MAX (O.C.)You better get going before peoplestart showing up. I need to getdressed.

    Karen races to the front door, stubbing her knee on an endtable. She hobbles out frantically. And we --

    FADE OUT.

    END OF ACT TWO

    ACT THREE

    FADE IN:

    INT. LIVING ROOM - LATER

    Hazel sits on the couch watching Dr. Phil. She changes thechannel once the commercial break hits, and now Ellen is onTV. It is the beginning of the show where she dancesthrough the audience.

    Hazel, who is still supposed to be recovering from her hipreplacement, gets up off the couch rather easily and startsdancing right along with Ellen. Very modern moves, too.

    Karen enters and sees what is going on. Hazel realizesshes home and immediately turns the dance routine into anexercise routine.

    KARENNice try.

    HAZELWhat are you doing here?

    KARENWho pays the mortgage?

    HAZELSomebodys testy.

    KARENDont call me testy. You know Ihate that.

    Hazel sits. Karen sets her briefcase down and sits as well.

    HAZELSorry. So why are you so crabby?

    Karen gives her a look.

    KARENIts nothing mom.

    Hazel scoots closer to Karen, putting an arm around her.

    HAZELNow if you cant tell your ownmother about something thatsbothering you, who can you tell?

    After a moment of hesitation, Karen finally gives in.

    KARENIts Max. Nadine was right, he ischeating on her.

    HAZELI knew it! The mans a douche bag.

    KARENMom!

    HAZELWhat? Hes two-timing your sister.

    KARENWith a man.

    Hazel stands.

    HAZEL

    What?

    She starts to breathe heavily.

    HAZEL (CONTD)Well that would explain his lovefor ABBA.

    KARENI dont know what to do. Should Itell Nadine?

    HAZEL

    Yes, right now.

    KARENI cant now. I havent had time toprocess this yet. Ill call herlater. I hope she takes it well.

    Nadine enters from the kitchen.

    NADINEWho takes what well?

    KAREN

    Nothing.

    Karen is completely shocked. There is an awkward moment oftension.

    HAZELYour husbands been getting hispipes cleaned.

    NADINEWhat? What is she talking about?

    KARENNadine, I saw Max today withsomeone else.

    NADINEHow so?

    KARENWith someone else.

    HAZELA man.

    Nadine stands in shock for a moment, then busts outlaughing.

    NADINEYeah, right. Oh, I get it. This isa little pay-back for having Sadammove in with you, huh?

    HAZEL(offended)

    Excuse me?

    KARENNot now.

    (to Nadine)Im serious. I overheard

    everything at his open house.

    Nadine realizes she may be telling the truth.

    NADINEWhy the hell would you tell methis?

    KARENYou wanted to know.

    NADINENo I didnt! No wife wants to find

    out her husband is cheating onher.

    HAZELWith a man!

    NADINEI cant believe this. You shouldhave just kept your mouth shut.

    Nadine exits in a huff.

    INT. MEGANS ROOM - NIGHT

    Karen is lying in her daughters bed. She begins to tossand turn, not getting comfortable.

    The time on the clock reads 11:20.

    She tries switching ends of the bed. Still not comfortable.

    12:16. Karen now struggles to flip the mattress. Shefinally gets in back in place, lays down, and a springpokes up into her back.

    She takes her blanket and pillow and heads to a chair. Shesnuggles up in it and finally begins to get comfortable.

    Then, LOUD Johnny Cash music begins playing. It immediatelysends Karen jumping up.

    INT. KITCHEN - SECONDS LATER

    Hazel, and 5 other SENIOR CITIZENS, 3 MEN, 2 WOMEN, sitaround the kitchen table playing cards. Some of the men areshirtless, including HARRY, whose name fits very well. TheJohnny Cash music is coming from a CD player on thecounter. Empty wine bottles scatter the room.

    MARTY lays his cards on the table.

    MARTYStraight.

    ROSEMarty, you need five cards in arow for a straight.

    MARTYFine. King high.

    Hazel lays her cards down very happily.

    HAZELPair of threes!

    She goes to collect the pot.

    HARRYNot so fast, hot momma. Threesevens.

    Hazel looks very disappointed. The men cheer and bang onthe table. She hesitantly stands and begins to unbutton herbottoms.

    Karen enters.

    KARENMom?! What the hell are you doing?

    ROSEPartying! Its Friday night.

    Nadine comes in and Karen closes the door.

    NADINEIts Max. I talked to him aboutwhat you said.

    KARENOh, Im sorry, sweetie.

    They sit.

    NADINEYou should be. You were wrong. Heexplained the whole thing to me.He was trying on Steve Turnersnew shoe inserts.

    Karen thinks for a moment.

    KARENOh that was Steve, wasnt it?Hows he doing?

    Nadine begins to cry again.

    Then, the sound of pebbles hitting the glass window.

    Megan slowly awakens, heads to the window and opens it.

    Outside, Harry begins playing the song again. Hes in hisown world and doesnt realize its Megan.
