January 2017 Warburg School Dear Warburg Families, Thank you all so much for participating in our Bus Lane closure during the very beginning and very end of the day. The road in front of the school is usually closed for around ten minutes in the mornings and around 15 minutes in the afternoons. Just a reminder that those of you using the “kiss and go” drop off/pick up area that if you are actually parking to do so appropriately and not block other vehicles or the exit. Over the course of the fall and into the new year, I have had the opportunity to talk with several parents re- garding issues with their junior high school children. It seems that many of the peer issues kids are having circle around social media and cell phones. Just before Christmas we had Ralph Cervi, a former RCMP, now working with the Sexual Assault Support Centre in Red Deer at the school. He spoke with all junior high kids and the grade ten students about the dangers of using social media inappropriately. Students of today have to deal with the pressures of school and growing up in a digital world. It is so easy for kids to post things on Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Kik, etc that they would never say to someone straight to a “friend’s” face. These digital platforms are not anonymous for the most part but they take away the human-ness of one-on-one conversations. I encourage you to discuss with your children how they are using social media with their friends. I also recommend that if your child is having issues with someone; that someone be blocked on the phone at the least. A great APP for you to download is the Warburg School App. It is available on Google Play and iTunes for free. much and will be greatly missed by all students and staff. Over her many years at Warburg School, Joanne

has made a difference to countless students from Kindergarten all the way up to grade 12. We wish her the

January:

Highlighted Habit of the Month:

Often we listen with the intent to respond. Let’s try lis-

tening, acknowledging and understanding what the

speaker is saying...then responding. Let’s practice:

Listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.

Be confident in voicing ideas.

Try to see things from their viewpoints.

Look people in the eyes when talking.

Our Elementary classes visit the Cloverleaf Manor residents through out the year for musical performances, games

and reading. This inter-generational experience is incredibly rewarding for our students and has created a bond with

adopted “grandparents” who truly enjoy the visits.

Grade 3 student, Larissa D. says “We read Beauty and the Beast and played a card game called “21”. We ask them

questions about their life and how old they are. The lady I visited said she loves horses and reading!”

Thank you to the Manor staff for helping to facilitate these visits and giving our students special snacks to share with

their Manor friends.

Happy New Years from the Career Counselling office:

Mrs. McDonald

Well, here we are halfway through this school year and a good time to consider your options for post second-ary. The earlier you apply the more likely chance you have of landing a spot in the course you want. I am at this time organizing visits from both Grant MacEwan and NAIT for either February and /or early March. The representatives from these schools will put on a short presentation in the PAC and then be available for one on one counselling to help students navigate the course selection process. If you think you would like a one on one session with the representatives please come see me in my classroom.

ALBERTA EDUCATION SURVEY FOR PARENTS:

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning.

From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. · In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from

Alberta Education in the mail. · In February, students in grades 4, 7 and 10 and all teachers will be completing their

surveys online at school.

All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school.

Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2017, and will be reported pub-licly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

PARENTS OF CHILDREN IN GRADE 4, 7 AND 10. PLEASE COMPLETE THIS SURVEY WHEN IT COMES IN THE MAIL. WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK. Call

Mrs. Maltais at the school if you have any questions.
