Interjection GamesWhat IS Bardic Instrumagic?

It is said that the music of a bard has a magicall its own. It has the power to Inspire thosewho hear it to new heights, to Fascinate withthe myriad harmonies weaved therein, orsimply to Suggest entirely new ways ofthinking about the world in general. One ofthe clearest meand by which bardsdifferentiate themselves from each other istheir repertoire of songs. Some may chooseto raise up hope and heroism, while anotherfocuses on the depths of despair with hissoulful dirges. The important thing to notehere is that, despite the bard being thoughtof as the great generalist in an adventuringparty, his selection of musical preference isone that tends to be mutually exclusive withrespect to many other choices.Bardic Instrumagic presents a second layerof musical specialization that sits upon thebard’s choice in instrument, not in songselection, thus allowing a level ofdifferentiation that is not mutually exclusiveto other layers already in existence. Whetherthe bard plays a trumpet, lute, drum, orclarinet now matters because each taps intothe primal sources of the magic of music, thehuman psyche and the natural world, in adifferent way, thus giving the bard access todifferent instrumagic.

Mechanics of BardicInstrumagicBardic Instrumagic is focused within certainparts of an instrument and is treated as aconsumable magic item. Drums contain it inthe drumhead, stringed instruments in thestrings, woodwinds in the mouthpiece, andbrass in the mouthpiece. Given the specialnature of Bardic Instrumagic, three fieldshave been added to the description of eachBardic Instrumagical item.Duration – Bardic Instrumagical itemswith a duration have a total lifespan of somany rounds before becoming nonmagicalhusks of what they once were. Whenever anBardic Instrumagical item is part of amusical instrument that is used for bardicmusic, the effect granted by the drumhead,mouthpiece, or strings begins immediatelyand the duration begins ticking down. Thissecondary granted effect, and its durationcountdown, ceases when the bard himselfceases to play, thus allowing items with aduration to have this duration split betweenmultiple uses of bardic music.Charges – Bardic Instrumagical items mayhave a number of charges rather than a setduration. Unless otherwise noted in theentry, a charge is consumed when the bardbegins to play bardic music, creating thecorresponding Instrumagical effect, but willnot recur until the bard ceases to play andbegins to play anew.

(In otherwords, Perform (peruvian pan flute) is not anacceptable Perform check for use with drumBardic Instrumagic, but Perform(drums) is.)If the bard fails by less than 5, he does notproduce any Instrumagical effect this song,but does not lose any duration or charges forhaving failed. If the bard fails by 5 or more,the Instrumagical item loses one round ofduration or one charge and does not produceany Instrumagical effect this song.The parts of an instrument imbued withInstrumagic are very integral to thefunctionality of an instrument. Should thebard choose to play an instrument withoutusing its Instrumagic, the DC is increased by5. In this case, if the bard fails by less than 5,the Instrumagic is used anyway. If the bardfails by 5 or more, the Instrumagical itemloses one round of duration or one chargeand does not produce any Instrumagicaleffect this song.

Instrumagical CrossoversAny Bardic Instrumagical item can becrafted for any of the four instrument typeslisted in this supplement, but taking certainrhythms and feels out of their natural hometends to cost money. Simply double the priceand add 5 to the DC of any Instrumagicalitem to be made into another instrumenttype. Note these can be rather difficult tofind in stores and are prime candidates forDM price gouging.

Interjection GamesBrass – When presented with brassinstrumentation, those with the poetic mindof the bard are wont to conjure up images ofthe lone bugler sounding his horn amidst theutter devastation wrought by pitched battle.A single beacon of certainty and order in avast panorama of chaos, brass bardicinstrumagic focuses the combat prowess ofthe player’s allies to a sharp point honed inequal measure by courage and camaraderie.Brass bardic instrumagic is focused in themouthpiece of the instrument. Removing amouthpiece from or adding a mouthpiece toa brass instrument is a full­round action thatprovokes attacks of opportunity.CamaraderieAura moderate enchantment anddivination; CL 6th; Slot instrument;Price 1,000 gp; Duration 10 rounds;DC 20DESCRIPTIONWhenever this brass mouthpiece is used toplay Bardic music, all allies that can hear thebard sing gain an additional +1 to hit whenflanking an enemy, gain a +1 morale bonusto AC if within reach of an ally, and grant anadditional +1 to skill checks when using theAid Other ability. Bardicinstrumagic of this sort lends its performerthe power to misdirect and confound, as wellas the ability to strike with the power of thestorm itself, the most transient naturalaspect of all.String bardic instrumagic is focused in thestrings of the instrument. Removing stringsfrom or securing strings to a stringedinstrument requires one minute ofuninterrupted work and provokes an attackof opportunity every round.GaleAura weak evocation; CL 5th;Slot instrument; Price 1000 gp;Charges 5 ; DC 20DESCRIPTIONWhenever the bard is charged in melee whileactively playing Bardic music using thesestrings, the charging creature is hit with apowerful gust of wind, knocking him proneunless he makes a DC 17 Strength check.Medium and smaller creatures that makethis Strength check still have their basespeed reduced by 10 ft.
