Back to our Motherland:

Trip To China – Part 2

Our last trip was in 2007, and we traveled from Beijing all the way down to Hong Kong, passing through many popular cities such as Xi’an, Shanghai, Suzhou, Zhuhai, and of course, our hometown village of Oo Syak.

For this next trip we will plan a similar itinerary where we will have the focus of our trip being in Oo Syak. What’s fascinating is that if you have certain information on your ancestors, the Zhongshan / Oo Syak officials may be able to help find other relatives still in Oo Syak(that you didn’t even know about!). There will be other side trips to popular Chinese cities as additional options.

After we speak to the travel agent, we will publish a rough itinerary in our next newsletter. If you have any ideas or suggestions, or if you are interested in attending our trip to China, please contact Jamie Chang at [email protected] or call her at (808) 373-1714.

Congratulations to our 2011-12

Scholarship Recipients!

This past July, we awarded our 2011-12 Oo Syak Gee Lu Scholarship to four deserving recipients. This is the 13th year we have given away scholarships. Today, scholarships are worth $1,000 each.

We are in the planning stages again for our next China trip. The trip is being planned for next year 2012.

From left to right (Bold indicates scholar winners): Alexis Chang,

Judge Theresa Chun, Judge Vernon Ching, Teralyn Chang, Flora

Chang (for Nicole Chang), and Daeton Chang. (Missing: Judge

Jean Kawamoto)

Each year we have an outside panel of judges to score our applicants. Our judges this year were Vernon Ching, Theresa Kam Chun, and Jean Kawamoto. We thank them for their time and (continued on page 3)

DOUBLE TEN PARADE

Where: Chinese Cultural Plaza CourtyardWhen: Sunday, October 9, 2011Time: Meet at 9:30am

(Parade festivities start at 10:00am)RSVP: Call Ellen Chang at 623-5910 by 9/30/11

Wear your OSGL t-shirts and hats!

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China (Taiwan). We have had a number of events to celebrate this ear-marking journey. Double Ten is the actual national holiday, and we will commemorate Taiwan’s nationalism and freedom from China with a parade around the Chinese Cultural Plaza on Sunday, October 9th. We

will meet at 9:30am in the plaza courtyard. Festivities will begin at 10:00am with a flag raising ceremony. Since we are celebrating the 100th centennial celebration, this will probably be a larger parade than usual.

OSGL has been participating in this event every year. It is a short walk around the plaza block, and we present a lei to the Founding Father, Dr. Sun Yat Senstatue on Beretania and River streets. After the parade, we will be treated to a Chinese luncheon at one of the nearby restaurants.

If you would like to participate in this short parade, please call Ellen Chang at 623-5910 by September 30th.

hard work to evaluate our applicants.

Our applicants are judged on their academic scholastic achievements, extra curricular activities, leadership, and community involvement, as well as communication, writing skills, presentation, and creativity. They need to write thorough essays about their experiences, aspirations, and thoughts.

For information and pictures of this year’s recipients turn to pages 4-5.

Scholarships (cont’d)

Our annual banquet was held last month at Hee HingRestaurant. We had another near sell-out event with 40 tables! That’s 400 people packed into the restaurant.

This year, our banquet was quite simple compared to other societies banquets. We had a really short program, especially since we miss the entertainment provided by our friend, Frank DeLima (he was out of town). So basically, it was just sharing the great company of the members, families, and friends.

The food was great! There were 8 courses with dessert. Nobody went home with an empty stomach.

We have another opportunity to get together and share the camaraderie at our Christmas Luncheon in December. Turn to page 7 for more details.

DAETON GA MING CHANG

Parents: Duane Koon Fong Chang and Shirleen Wai Yung Ng ChangGrandparents: George Tai Hung Chang and Eldora Lau Chang

Daeton has a passion for flying. He attends the University of North Dakota since 2005 majoring in flight aviation, with hopes of becoming an air traffic controller.

Besides flying, Daeton’s other passion is computers and technology. Along with his sister, Teralyn, for the past seven summers, Daeton volunteers with Seniors Helping Seniors on how to use computers. Although he teaches them the basics of word processing, emails, and internet searches, he also finds unlimited information on the World Wide Web such as couponing, mapping directions and bus routes, and up-to-the-minute news stories.

Applying computers and technology to his schooling, all of Daeton’s aviation classes are taught on a computer using a power point presentation or by running scenarios through computer programs to train students how to vector aircrafts to their destinations properly and safely.

Daeton received OSGL scholarships in 2005 and 2006, and 2010.

TERALYN GA LING CHANGParents: Duane Koon Fong Chang and Shirleen Wai Yung Ng ChangGrandparents: George Tai Hung Chang and Eldora Lau Chang

Teralyn has been at Idaho State University for three years now. She continues to pursue a career in pharmacy by tackling some of the toughest science classes to most of us. Although it has been a challenge, Teralyn is still excited to learn how the body functions, and to see how different things affect the human body.

Brother and sister duo, Daeton and Teralyn Chang, have each won one of our 2011-12 scholarships. Their parents served as Board of Directors in the past, and their grand-parents regularly attend our BOD meetings. Daeton and Teralyn have participated in many OSGL events in the past.

Although they attend different schools on the mainland, they always come back home for the summer and work together. Read on to see what kind of work they do as a team.

In addition to pharmacy, Teralynwill also minor in Business. She feels that a business background will not only help her gain a higher position in the pharmacy field, but also help manage her personalbusiness finances.

As we mentioned in previous years, Teralyn volunteers her time with her brother, Daeton, at Seniors Helping Seniors, an organization where volunteers teach senior citizens how to use computers four months out of the year. After six years of being an instructor, Teralyn became a Head Instructor.

This is her fourth consecutive year receiving our Society’s scholarship.

Annual Picnic at Kapiolani Park

It was a breezy summer day, near the end of August. A perfect way to have a picnic. The weather just cool enough, where it is not too hot, and gentle trade winds blowing throughout Kapiolani Park.

We all gathered for the annual picnic, hosted by the Congress of Chinese Societies United. Many other Chinese Societies came with their families to have some summer fun before school got back in session.

There was a lion dance to kick off the festivities. And there were many games, such as musical chairs, pass the bu-look, scavenger hunt (picking up new cans of soda and packets of snacks), water balloon toss, etc. All members that were in attendance had a lot of fun participating in the games. Our very own 1st Vice-President Jamie Chang paired with member Ernest Chang won first place in the water balloon toss!

After all the fun and games, it was time for lunch. Box Chinese lunches were handed out to each of the societies, and ice cold watermelon was served.

Lucky numbers were called out as door prizes for the attendees. If you missed it, there’s always next year….

1) Lillian and Ernest Chang waiting to play games. 2) Ernest Chang

and Sarah (grand-daughter to Connie Mark) passing the bu-look. 3)

OSGL gang just after the soda can scavenger hunt. 4) Vice President

Jamie Chang in the water balloon toss. 5) 1st place winner of the water

balloon toss Jamie Chang and Ernest Chang. 6) Lillian Chang and

English Secretary Connie Mark getting ready for lunch.

The seventh annual Splendor of China is coming the Neal Blaisdell Center again. It is sponsored by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, and showcases some of the most spectacular Chinese culture and arts performances in Hawaii.
