InspiredBY FABRICS ...

Fabrics are inspirational and one of the best places to start when designing a room

As a designer, I look forward to the startof a new project. I enjoy poring overfabric books gathering ideas and direc-tion, and have been known to design an entirespace just from the inspiration of one fabric. Ilove the feel of lush velvets, the beauty ofsome richly wovensilks and the simplicityof linen. But as beau-tiful as some fabricsare, not every fabric issuitable for all applica-tions. When workingwith our clients we try to educate them inall aspects associatedwith the fabrics we aresuggesting for theirhome, such as durabil-ity, care, pattern intri-cacy and colour.

Durability is determined by the double-rubcount of a fabric. Fabrics are tested for thenumber of times a machine can pass back andforth over the fabric before it wears down.Personally, I tend to stay away from the lowerrub counts for residential use, and tend not todo any upholstery in a fabric less than 9,000 -12,000 double-rubs just to be safe; or Iwould use these fabric on a low-usage pieceof furniture like an occasional chair for high-usage areas, the higher the rub count the bet-ter. You may have recently been hearing a lotof buzz about Crypton fabrics, or fabrics withNano-tex plus Dura-Block. These are high-performance fabrics that are anti-microbial,stain and moisture-resistant. These are fabricsthat are beyond forgiving and are fantasticfor busy areas like family rooms.

As important as durability is in your fabricselection, equally important is pattern intricacyand colour. I love mixing colours and patterns,but it is important that the fabric you haveselected is relevant for the required usage.Selecting the right fabric for your furniture and

window treatments can be challenging. Youshould consider that the pattern scale andrepeat of a particular fabric you love may notbe the best choice for upholstering a diamond-tufted sofa, or for inverted-pleated draperypanels.

Continue the inspiringcreation of your livingspace by introducingseveral different pat-terns, colours and tex-tures. There are so manygreat fabric lines in the market to choosefrom. One of my all-timefavourites is RobertAllen Fabrics. Be bold inyour choices. If you finda pattern you love butare a bit hesitant to useit on a larger scale, try

it in some toss cushions or perhaps and an ottoman. Many different fabric patterns, scales and colours can be mixed together tocomplement your rooms just remember tokeep a common element throughout.

Selecting art can be one of the most fun parts of the design process. Its a chance for home-owners to express their personality and truly pick something that speaks to them. As much asit can be a romantic meandering shopping experience, my clients also tell me it feels like themost difficult. Taking the plunge from ALL those giant blank walls is scary.

OF SELECTING THE ART

SCALEIf the piece or pieces are going over furniture,use the outside limits of the bed, credenza orcouch as your guide. Dont extend the artbeyond those outside edges. So if the sofa is sixfeet wide, your art should be under six feet in

width. Anything bigger will look and feel tootop-heavy. Again the same rule applies for multiple pieces of art. Plan groupings of art tofit within the overall boundaries a single largerpiece might.

Some might say to jump in and buy apiece you love and then design the roomaround it. It happens and Ive seen somebeautiful spaces with art collections thattruly do play the starring role. For me, Iprefer to select my clients art, towardsthe end of a design project. That is afterthe furniture, the drapery and the hardsurfaces and around the same time as thepaint. Art can be the finishing detail thatsoftens and connects the overall designor, it can be a bold demanding statement.Its tricky to pinpoint the perfect visualweight, scale and colours without themajority of the room already complete.Fear not, there are a few simple things tokeep in mind that will help you take theplunge with confidence.

FEATURE OR FILLERArt can be a bold statement, striking up con-versation and demanding attention. Large-scale canvases, graphic imagery and dark orbold colours will ensure the piece commandsthe attention you intended. On the other hand,a photograph framed to blend with the adjacent wall or a soft watery landscape willprovide some relief from the vast blank wallsbut for the most part blend quietly with theoverall palette. Spend a bit of time in the roombeforehand and decide what your messageand overall intent is for the piece.

STYLEThis is where there really are no rules. Art whendone well expresses the journey and personal-ity of the homeowners. A traditional piece can as easily live in a contemporary home asan abstract might in the den of a traditionalhome. A great tip to bridge the styles is thechoice of frame. Selecting a frame that is inkeeping with the overall design style andmaterials will easily connect the pieces. Likeframing and old oil painting in a cleanunadorned black frame.

PROPORTIONSAs a general rule of thumb take your cues fromwhat is happening around the piece. If its atall, narrow wall without any furniture to worryabout, then look to mimic the wall area bychoosing a tall, skinny piece that fills the areawith a nice bit of relief around it of six feet orso. You can also opt for two smaller pieces thatwhen stacked visually fill the same tall thinarea.

Remember not every piece need be thefinest or most expensive. I love mixing invest-ment paintings along with more personalizedand affordable framed photography. One of myfavourite ways to buy original art is to attendthe more grass roots arts fairs showcasingemerging students. You can pick up originalworks starting at $100.

Another terrific way to test out differentstyles and sizes is to opt for art rentals. Mostmajor galleries offer the service, as does theAGO through their Rental Gallery. Typically,theyll credit part or all of the rental fee towarda purchase should you choose to keep some-thing permanently. Ive done it many timeswith clients and its such a fun and useful wayto explore your style.

Armed with these tips and tricks, youreready to venture out and begin building yourown art collection today. OD


Whether you choose from classic andnatural materials such as marble,granite and limestone, or from awide array of man-made materials and com-posites, it is the one element which can deter-mine the style, level of luxury and functionalityin a kitchen.

We all know that marble and granite areclassic choices for a countertop, whether in akitchen or a bathroom. They are both naturalstones which must be quarried, leaving anenvironmental impact which must be consid-ered when we make our choice. Though gran-ite is virtually indestructible and heat proof, itcan be very expensive and have a heavy lookin the space. With prices beginning at $50 persquare foot and up, there are options for various budgets.

Marble provides a very desirable high endlook and depending which strain of marble youchoose, it has very good heat and waterproofproperties, although it can scratch and stainunless it is professionally sealed. When choos-ing marble, you must be ready to accept that itwill age over time and the patina of your lifewill be reflected in the marble.

One of the most abundant minerals in the world, quartz is often considered thealternative to granite and marble. Available in numerous colours and now even in the lookof marble and limestone, quartzs non-porousquality makes it highly resistant to mold, bac-terial contamination, stain, heat and all of lifes accidents making it a perfect choice formost residential or commercial applications.Because it is man-made, the availability of

consistently sized and coloured slabs is adesigners dream. Slabs of quartz are normally55 x 122 and they are often available asjumbo sized slabs at 63 x 132, which is fan-tastic for design flexibility and often fewer cutlines. Priced from $80 per square foot, it is notinexpensive, but it is a perfect choice for thosewho want many customization options.Soapstone is a metamorphic rock com-

posed primarily of talc as well as magnesium,mica, quartz, chlorite and iron. It is verydurable and has been used for centuries to create everything from fireplaces to sinks. It iscoming into vogue these days because of itsnatural beauty and durability; hot pans, lemon

juice and wine will not damage it. The colourranges from light gray to black with randomveining which gives it an ability to look great in rustic or traditional interiors as well as inmodern and contemporary spaces. At about$80 to $100 per square foot installed, it is onthe pricey side, but will provide a lifetime ofenjoyment.

The desire to be eco-friendly makes recy-cled glass a perfect option for a contempo-rary space. Available in multiple colours andtextures, it is perfect for a bar or as a secondarycounter surface because it is easy to clean and resists heat and stains. Cement is oftenused with glass to create a textural look with

just about any material because they are completely man-made. The ability to mouldsinks, drains and creative shapes makes this adesigners dream while the ease of mainte-nance makes it a wonderful investment forlong term use.Metal counters such as copper and zinc

are not common, but they make a powerfulstatement. At about $100 per square foot andup, it is a creative choice which will patina overtime and be the conversation starter in yourkitchen or bar area.

Sustainably harvested wood will bringany serious cooks kitchen to the next levelwith its natural beauty and ability to work as abuilt-in cutting surface. Maintenance of regularsanding and oiling will bring out a beautifulpatina and enhance the inherent properties.Even though it is porous, wood has an inherentability to protect from bacteria build up as longas it is cleaned regularly with mild soap andwater. Prices vary from $35 per square foot andup depending on the type of wood and how itis fabricated.

Lets not discount laminate counters as they are still the best option for budget conscious projects. Improvements in quality,fabrication, colour and textural choices make this a surprisingly good option wheninstalled with no backsplash, simple edges andaccented with beautiful tiles. Be creative andexpressive in the design of the countertop bycombining metal finishes and interestingtranslucent combinations, high gloss and textural surfaces. With starting prices at around$8 per square foot, it is an attractive choicewhen your budget is tight.
