Dear Reader,

Youre holding in your hands the first issue of onspOt Magazine! Yes, Teenspot is now called onspOt Magazine. The name change is in line with our strategic direction aimed at eclipsing a larger section of the youths. Over time, we've realized that our target audience spans from teens, university scholars, young professional and adults too so our new name onspOt is meant to be more inclusive. Further to the name change, weve also assumed the use of our new identity and logo with the same slogan We Do It For the Youth. We promise to continually ensure the usual content and style upheld bearing strict relevance to todays young generation.

Weve covered a wider variety of topics in this summer issue. I had an interview with Dr. Gwamaka Robert Kifukwe, a 28-year old man, with a PhD. His respect for what I do and

my respect for him for managing his brand, made the interview one of my favourite interviews since becoming the editor of this great magazine. He is no doubt a man shrouded with selfless attitude.

We connect you with Ms. Liz Wachuka, the Managing Director and Co-founder of Inner Space Africa Company Ltd. Find what odds she has had to beat in her life to get where she is today.

These days everything is about young people so weve Mr. Othman Madati in Career Profile; Boniface and Mbwana as Young Movers & Shakers and Bakka and Joachim in our Moment On Top Column.

For all fashion lovers out there, be sure to check out the hottest trends and great buys. Weve also included some fashion donts for guys. Ms. Dyauli provides gourmet lovers with a feast theyll never forget. Need some help coming up with fun ideas this summer? Then check out some of the activities weve suggested to get you and your friends out and active.

Overall, we believe we have given you enough stories to inspire, challenge, educate and entertain you and have no doubt that you will apreciate the new

direction we have taken. This edition of onspOt Magazine will definitely be a reliable source in providing you with relevant information and entertainment, thus capturing the essence of youth life.

Till the next issue, enjoy your summer!

We ask four contributors from this issue to tell us what music means to them and

how music impacts their lives.

Music is the sound of my soul. What I feel, what I

know, and what Ive experienced, it is put into

one melody.

I definitely believe music is the reason Im on the positive path to enlightenment. Music

has such an impact on my thoughts and actions.

Music makes me feel alive. The barriers I put up around

myself come down - be it listening, dancing, playing,

whatever. It strips away the protection and lets me see

the human in me.

I enjoyed the June Issue of onspOt Magazine. Im particularly proud of Liz Wachuka, since shes proud of herself and shows us young women that we do not have to be like anyone! Let all young women consider her quote, Your life is your own, only you have the power to live it as you please.

Dorah, UDSM

As a young motivational speaker with big ambitions, I was inspired by Liz Wachukas article. It challenges me to take personal accountability in all my endeavors and not to blame anyone or anything else. Big up to everyone who contributes to making onspOt Magazine a success!

Edward, Arusha

I saw the premiere issue of onspOt Magazine and absolutely had to have it. Its unanimous, Gwamaka Kifukwe is hot. I really loved getting to know more about him and I really like his perspective on life. I read the magazine from cover to cover and Im still re-reading it. Keep it up the good work guys!!

Halima, Tanga

The Summer Issue was so great; you featured Dr. Gwamaka! I think hes become my role model and I cant stop talking about him. onspOt Magazine, you need to get the Magazine of the Year Award! Keep it up and look for more inspirational and phenomenal youths!!

Ann Lilian, Bagamoyo

Your magazine gives readers access to great mentors we never thought wed hear from. Thank you so so much for featuring Gwamaka and Liz and Im really glad to have invested in onspOt Magazine!

YAHAYA by Lady Jaydee

This is that song the song that will always mean Tanzania 2013 to us. What a jam! We love the fact that every Tanzanian had to bow down to this song. Yes, the song raced across age grades; from kindergartens to men and women well advanced in years. It is a massive hit and caps off the best songs that made 2013 so remarkable. The best way to listen to Yahaya is to have your volumes at full blast! If it doesnt charge you up into action, then we dont know what will! Our Art Director used to use it

to drum himself into action when designing our magazines! In any case, Lady Jaydee got it going this year!

JIKUBALI by Ben Pol

This is one of our favorite and top motivational songs of all time. We must also admit that Ben Pol did something completely fresh and classic. This song is about doing our very best for dreams. Dont be afraid to reach out and give your everything. Its only when you put your heart and soul into your goals that you live your life to the fullest so Jikubali!

MAJANGA by Snura

This hit single made budding actress Snura so proud. With an incredible energy and very exciting spirit, Majanga shot to top of charts in Tanzania days after it was released. It is one of the most cheerful songs with signature beat never to be forgotten. Its position as number 3 cannot be contested.

PERSONALLY by P SquareYou could hardly go a day without hearing this song in Dar! The Nigerians, in fact, are dominating the East African airwaves we call it pan-African pop. This song received positive reviews from many people who were addicted to its catchy beats and lyrical rhyme schemes. It

COOL PAGE

So heres a list of ten famous songs that we (onspOt Magazine team) liked and think that got a good amount of play in Tanzania in 20013, along with some context that explains why each shows something deeper about society. Enjoy!!

onspOt - Issue No. 8 | Sep - Nov 20138

was also tough for us to decide between this joint and Kukere by Iyanya.

NAKUPENDA PIA by Wyre Ft. Alaine

Wyre is one of the most consistent artists in Kenya with one of the longest running careers in the 254 music scene. He has done a whole of collaborations with international artists including Cecile and Morgan Heritage. Nakupenda Pia is a simple dancehall track; Wyre and Alaine balance each other out beautifully with each making their presence felt without outdoing the other. We just wish more people would do jams like this!

STILL THE ONE by Sauti Sol Every time we listen to a brand new

Sauti Sol track, we cant help but

appreciate the vocal and instrumental wealth the group possess: how each and every member release sounds so distinctively unique and yet so very well recognizable as one of their own. Still the One is a love ballad dedicated to the groups die-hard fans that are embodied as the love interest in the track.

POMBE YANGU by Madee This is one of the few songs that truly made anyone want to go crazy this year; clubs and parties shuddered under the madness. Madee metamorphosed from a rap singer into an energetic party-box that unleashed the insane side of everyone. The song is beautifully composed to move at breakneck

speed; fueling the madness. Madees success in this song is what we will

remember him for and thats why its at number 07.

KESHO by Diamond

Over the past few years award winning musician Diamond has quickly risen to fame and he has not slowed down since then. Kesho is one of the singles that you can listen to endlessly. We also love the video which features none other than Kenyan singer and actress, Avril as

the young lady that Diamond takes home for his parents approval.

SO CRAZY by Maua Sama Ft. Mwana FA

So we have to admit, So Crazy is one of the most beautiful songs that we have ever heard this year. Maua is an absolutely brilliant singer and as seen in her song, shes an extremely versatile singer who could virtually sing anything. This new act was discovered by Mwana FA and is currently a student at Moshi University College of Cooperative and Business Studies (MUCCOBS) taking Bachelor Degree in Marketing & Entrepreneurship.

MUZIKI GANI by Ney wa Mitego Ft. Diamond OK, so to be totally honest, this is

not our favorite song musically. But we still think of it as a phenomenon because (a) you couldnt switch to the radio for 20 minutes without hearing the song, (b) it gives any American pop song a run for its money and (c) it captures the sometime exhausting Tanzanian party spirit pretty well.

By: ONSPOT TEAMPAGE TURNER

You wrote a book known as Life and You. Could you please describe the experience? The experience was long and eventful but two challenges seemed to weigh in the most overall: 1) convincing myself that my thoughts were worth sharing with others 2) convincing someone to publish a first time author. I was 26 when I first expressed my intentions to author an inspirational book borne solely out of my experiences and thoughts over a period of more than 5years at the time. Visit my website www.magavilla.com and read the article Writing my book for a detailed account of how it all unfolded.

What did you learn from the experience?I learned in real terms that the opportunity of a lifetime must be taken within the lifetime of the opportunity. I captured that opportunity. I also learned that every experience, if well communicated, is an experience worth sharing. We cannot shy away from this communication, the most critical quality that makes us human. Inspiration is everywhere; we just have to allow ourselves to be inspired enough to see the importance of inspiring others. It was truly one of the most profound

moments in my life.

What is your take on African writers? We have a lot of great classical writers who informed what Africa is today through the power of the pen. Writing as an art-form has evolved making it easy for us to misunderstand its roll in todays Africa but now more so than ever before, the power of the pen needs to be called on. I see a looming gap in how we engage the youth of our era as authors.

What does your collection of books reveal about you?Im a complicated person. Im driven by passion, structure, and what I like to call the visual process (conceptualizing), but Im pretty functional when it comes to my book preferences, preferring non-fiction books.

What book has had a great impact on your career as a Marketing expert?Sun Tzus The Art of War is my all time favorite business/strategy read. It captures my passion for strategy, philosophy and psychology; which are at the core of why I wanted to be an influencer of people, which is what marketing has allowed me to do for more than 10 years now.

With Kilimanjaro Music Tour and Serengeti Fiesta, (the biggest concerts of the season in Tanzania), already underway as we write, and many more to come shortly, we thought this would be a perfect time to give

some advice on what to wear for outdoor music concerts.

If the concert is in afternoon then be sure to shield your eyes from UV rays with shades that offer 100% UV protection.

1) Hats Off to You

Accessorize your arm with these cool-as-hell cuffs!

onspOt - Issue No. 8 | Sep - Nov 2013

Block the sun from your eyes while looking totally boho chic. You

can decide to put on fedora, cloche, beanie, wide brim

or simple cap. The choice is all yours!!

Channel your inner-70s wild child and wear

headbands like these across your forehead.

3) Seventies Style

Try on one or more of these items, and we promise youll look

cool-as-hell while youre rocking out!!

2) Sunnies!

4) Cuff Love

Briefly about Lucci

The Tanzanian budding music writer, rapper, singer and most sought after producer of Kilimanjaro and Channel O Music Award nominated songs, Luciano Gadie Tseres music is infectious that it cuts across East African fans like a hot knife does to butter. Fondly known as Lucci this young man is a household name in the whole of East Africa for his very unique style of music Bongo Crank that sets him aside from many producers and artists in the region. In his own words, he draws us closer to him. Read on

And, how did you connect with Cpwaa?Well, Cpwaa was looking for a producer and it happened that we had a mutual friend who introduced me. After sampling my beat, the next day he called me like Lucci, lets do some business and we recorded the first part of Pwaa. Since then, my relationship with him has really been strong. I have produced about 95% of his music hits!

Can you describe, briefly, how the two of you work together on a musical project? We always start out with a musical idea. Great effort goes into creating a solid melodic core that means we have no rules or limitation. When we have some killer beats and musical starting points, we hook up and get cracking on the lyrics and melody. We make sure theres a lot of melody in the track, so it can inspire us. Together with our team, we simplify the song and never quit before we feel weve got a killer song!

What obstacles did you face on your way up? How did you overcome them? Not so much that I can remember, but at some point people were reluctant to the type of the music that I was doing and also some media houses never played my songs. I managed to overcome all these obstacles by doing undeniably good music that caught the whole society.

Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with?Yes, Ive been dreaming about working with Diamond. He is the biggest artist at the moment and his platform can change the whole direction of the music in Tanzania. Other artists I think I could create magic with are Timberland who is also a producer and Wizkid from Nigeria.

Please tell us about Transformax Records?Transformax is a recording studio with stands for maximum transformation. Our studio is

located at Kida Plaza in Mbezi. We aim to change the whole industry in East Africa. We produce radio jingles, radio spots and audio advertisement, all kind of music production from Bongo flava to Crank, Hip Hop, RnB, Gospel, Taarab you name it. We also produce audio for documentary. Transformax Records has also its own label artists (Jokate and Lucci).

What can we expect from Transformax Records in 1 to 2 years to come?We have many new exciting projects lined up for our people in East Africa and world at large. Were blessed to work with the best people in the industry, and well definitely do our best to be present on the charts. All we can do is just continue having fun and create the music that we love. At the end of the day its the public that will decide.

Do you have advice for young people who want to become music producers like you?Go for what you re feeling and what comes natural to you. Believe in your own original ideas, accept criticism and find people to collaborate with who share your vision. Finding the right management is also the key. Of course you also have to learn your craft and get experience. To get results tends to take longer than you think, but never give up your dream.

This Onspot being a music issue, I have been wondering how to relate this column to music but it is a tad too difficult. I have nothing musical, but then, music has different faces to it. For one, this column has always maintained an air of seriousness that it deserves a parents perspective of life to direct the youth. I have been mulling on Rihannas song Russian roulette and tried to relate it to todays youth and the danger that abound on their way to adulthood. Youth are more prone to playing Russian roulette, often with very serious results. In the game, when the youth pull the trigger, they often shoot themselves irreparably. Please

read on to understand.

Many are times when we live our lives with regrets for having engaged in one two acts of rebellion. These regrets remain embedded in our mind forever owing to the consequences that develop later in life. Later in life, one lives to regret the first puff of a cigarette stub we inhaled, the first dose of cocaine or ecstasy we sniffed, the first sip of hard liquor we swallowed or the unprotected sexual liaisons we had with someone we hardly knew.

All these have long run have consequences that are very direthey are things we wish we

PARENTAL EYE

never tried at all. Thats where the idiom playing the Russian roulette comes in. Why is it called so? It is because Russian roulette is a game of chances. The moment you try it, you are hooked forever and it will require divine intervention to get you out of it.

Russian roulette is a potentially lethal game of chance in which a player places a single round in a revolver, spins the cylinder, places the muzzle against their head, and pulls the trigger. The chances that the bullet lodged in one of the six chambers blows one brains to the roof are arguably very high.

It is synonymous with recklessly gambling with ones life by putting it in the line of fire. Someone doing drugs, engaging in unprotected sex or any other activity that is potentially dangerous is playing Russian roulette. Let us face the facts; at a certain point in our youth, and in order to be seen as worthy of the company of fellow youth, you may find youth engaging in casual sex, only

remembering that he or should have used protected themselves. The list of consequences is endless unwanted pregnancies, substance abuse and death.

Lately, the media has lately been awash with stories about drug consumption becoming a menace to Tanzanian youths. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. Research is showing that increasing numbers of users are taking it in dangerous cocktails of drugs because supplies are becoming more easily available while users had become increasingly complacent about the dangers.

Let us go back to the roulette analogy, the element of risk-taking and the spinning of the revolver's cylinder being a deliberate risk-taking. For instance, in a revolver that holds six rounds, the chance is one in six; for a revolver that holds five, the chance - or risk - is one in five well over twenty percent probability. That is too high a risk. You can take my word to the bank.

By sounding your success I dont mean blowing your own horn - Here I am referring to how you can use sound and music to achieve success with less effort and more fun. I am talking about the new interdisciplinary study of how music/sound impacts a persons brain, body and mind.

For the past few decades the

If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. ... I get most joy in life out of music. - Albert Einstein

SUCCESS

powerful impact of music and sound has been the focus of many eminent scholars, from neuroscientists to musicologists, from traditional healers to medical students. If you just google music and brain or music and healing you get an idea of the extent of the research being done in this area.

The power of music/sound is, however, not a modern-time discovery. Ancient wisdom from many cultures provides plenty of evidences of the important role music (or sound patterns) played in a society. In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, one of the most important Olympian gods, Apollo, ruled music, poetry (sound), arts as well as medicine and healing. In both the Judeo-Christian and Hindu tradition, there was the Word or Aum, the vibration of god and his creation. (That is the idea underlying all mantra- or chant-based therapy.) In the Chinese tradition, ancient Confucian classics referred to music as a powerful way to harmonize and unify a people. Emperors and kings were known to have used music for this reason.

In modern days, music is a big business. You probably consume quite a bit of it already, or maybe even do business in this industry. Now the question is: how much of the music you listen to on a daily basis is beneficial to your wellbeing, your career and your success? Or has it even crossed your mind that music is capable of providing you with such assistance?

The good news is: yes, modern music is capable providing us with

a lot of the help we desperately need. For the past few decades musicians have been working alongside with scientists, researchers and spiritual healers of many different traditions to come up with music that has specific targeted functions to help people increase focus, relieve stress, enhance creativity, etc. The bad news is: this type of music tends to get buried by the loud commercial sound-scape in which we all live.

One of the great benefits of using music therapy is: it takes no extra time. All you have to do is to turn it on. Otherwise what youre listening is just the white noise of your office or your house. By adding the right kind of music to your environment, you can bring about many changes you desire, such as harmony, energy, insight, and so on, without having one more thing on your to-do list.

In order to benefit from the uplifting or healing power of music, the first thing you need is attention. Observe how music affects you: the rhythm, the tempo, the melody, the voice, the orchestration, etc. Certain types of music tend to produce certain mental-emotional and physical state. Through observation you will very quickly find the right pieces that suit you and your specific purpose.

Well I hope you can try some of great inspirational albums as you work on your computer or drive in a car. Dont forget to enjoy your own sonic exploration, and find many ways to get more done with less effort.

For the past few decades musicians have been working alongside with scientists, researchers and spiritual healers of many different traditions to come up with music that has specific targeted functions to help people increase focus, relieve stress, enhance creativity, etc.

These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investorsintroducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.

The initiative kicked off in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Since then, it has grown to over 130 countrieswith nearly 24,000 partner organizations empowering nearly 20 million people.

Hopeful Futures Foundation (HFF) is an NGO initiative born in the UK aiming towards increasing literacy rates in remote and underdeveloped regions in Africa. Holding to education and literacy as the outmost essential values and premises for development, HFF strives to create, produce and execute initiatives that can promote and manifest those core values through influential projects.

In Tanzania, Hopeful Futures Foundation (HFF) was first launched in 2009. After extensive study and careful review, Tanga, was chosen as the first location in Tanzania to implement our initiative. Kids ages 3 to 24 are a part of our project and get direct access to the school and its facilities that we have constructed. They attend classes on an on going basis supervised and directed by the relevant aligned schooling curriculum in accordance and association with the ministry of education of Tanzania. few years of activity is to have had this privileged opportunity, to continuously bring countless smiles to those young developing bright minds that are now set on this endless road of knowledge and dreams. What makes our world so globally connected and accessible today is mainly knowledge and communication. Both essential elements become available through literacy and education. We believe that every kid, anywhere on the planet should have direct access within reach to those fundamental platforms that will be the base for learning and knowledge. It is our goal to raise awareness towards that cause and make it a global treated concern.

We are launching a series of events to promote our cause, raise awareness and funds. We want to continue and promote structured education programs and systems for the kids who today dream of hopeful futures and in time can pave their path into their bright futures. Our first event in the series is the World Food Day where we want to bring as many people together to get exposed and better acquainted with our cause, our initiative and the nature of our foundation. For this meaningful event we have selected the theme of food, more precisely, food from around the world more, tastes from all corners of the globe will be available. Nothing is more natural than food to bring people together to discuss, share and contribute. The theme for World Food Day is

to join the rest of the world for the first time ever in Tanzania to celebrate and bring to attention the importance of food, being that food is something that everyone anywhere can relate to as the essential ingredient for life and existence in general, comes to symbolize and represent how knowledge and education are just as essential ingredients for our survival and growth.

Hopeful futures always want to involve and relate our initiatives to the local communities and environments we work in, for this event

we will also bring and use local fresh produce grown and raised on local farms in Tanzania by national farmers. Farmers will be able to present their products and potentially extend their supply chain network.

We want to invite to you to join us for a meaningful event full of tastes, good cause and purpose. An event that will make you discover, know and an become an active participant in an ongoing struggle for life and the basic tenet of such a

blessing, nutrition, on which found education and knowledge which must be accessible for everyone to provide a better future for everyone, hopeful futures.

By: KIDUM KIDIBO

Dear East African Youths,It is a great honor and pleasure to be given this opportunity to say a few words to you. I am told the theme for this issue is music and I find this very exciting because music is so naturally united with us. Everyone enjoys some sort of music and that is evident in almost every important event from weddings and funerals to graduation ceremonies and presidential inaugurations. It is also my hope that at the end of the day, my story will inspire and motivate you to go out there and realize your dream.

So, who is Kidum?Interestingly though, very few people know the origin of my name Kidum. I was given that name at birth and literary Kidum refers

to a 20 litre gallon of water. I was born a big baby, and my family likened me to a Kidum due to my size but my real name is Jean Pierre Nimbona. I was born in 1974 in the remote village of Kinama, Northern Burundi. My mother is a Tutsi and my father is a Hutu. I think I was born a musician, even though I am the only one with a musical bone in my entire family.

At the age of 10, I was already singing and attracting audiences that not only marveled at my talent but also enjoyed the entertaining sound of my vocals. I would sing in church, at home and on the streets, with many people who flocked to my performances encouraging

me on. My vocals would always be accompanied by sounds of the drum jua kali drums which I made by hand using materials I collected around the homestead. These drums produced amazing sounds.

By the age of 16, my reputation as a young musician was fast growing, as I sang and played the drums to my own compositions teaching, directing and guiding myself through it all. I had no teacher, no music trainer, no vocal coach, no producer, no music director it was just me teaching myself and learning from my mistakes as I grew from strength to strength. I knew my future laid in music, so I was prepared to do whatever it took to achieve my dream with or without assistance.

I remember my parents had their own set of worries as far as my future was concerned. They simply could not understand why I was persistently pursuing a career in music, an industry that was not highly regarded or recognized. People who had achieved success in education were employed in big jobs in the government and in the private sector. My parents wanted me to follow the same path, as that way they were sure I would secure a good job. They were doubtful of any success in the music industry. I knew what I wanted in life and nothing stopped me from pursuing my goal.

My life as a refugeeI remember something happened that almost shattered my dream. This was the political unrest that hit my country Burundi and neighboring Rwanda in 1994. I and my family were forced to flee Burundi and soon found our way into Kenya. I arrived as a refugee in Kenya in 1995 aged 21. Adjusting to my new status as a refugee was not easy. I was uncertain of my future. The only thing that gave me hope was the fact that I knew I had this talent in me which no one could take away from me. Even, as a refugee, I still held on my dream of making it big in the music industry.

Rising to fameI stayed at the camp for only three days. My lifelong dream of becoming a musician made me go to Nairobi and within a short time; I

joined The Hot Rod Band. I worked with the band for eight good years, playing the drums and singing. I later left the group to form the famous now Boda Boda Band. When I first formed my band, I also looked for passionate people to work with. I had no money to pay my Bands mate and I knew that the only thing that could hold us together and to our musical dream was passion. Today, the Boda Boda Band plays regularly at different entertainment spots around Nairobi. Furthermore, as a solo musician, I have recorded four albums. The first two are dedicated to my countrymen and to neighboring Rwandese, and primarily focus on promoting peace and harmony.

Life lessonsIve experienced a lot throughout my life and have lessons to share with both musicians and non-musicians. The first thing we all need to do is discover our talents. Not all of us are born to be musicians; in the same way not all of us are born to be athletes. For example, even though I admire David Rudisha very much, it would be very difficult for me to become an athlete of his repute. You should always remember that just because someone else is successful in one field does not mean that you too will be successful in it. Then again, you should always remember that success does not come overnight I know some people start singing today and expect to be millionaires tomorrow. Thats not possible.

Lastly, Id like to remind you all that no matter who you are, or where you come from, if you dare to dream, the world is truly your centre stage. Dream BIG and go achieve them. It is all possible!

Thank you and all the best!

Rhythm, intimacy, timing,

of the dancing couple are the

main elements in salsa. Every

dance with someone is indeed

a conversation and the better

the conversation the more the

fun you have together, says one

salsa instructor from Nanasi

Studio in Masaki, Dar es Salaam.

A basic salsa step will have you moving on beats 1, 2, 3 and pause at 4 and moving again on 5, 6, 7 and pause at 8. The rhythm of the dance often comes from within you and your partner.

DATING WORLD

What kind of conversations are you having with your partner? If your conversations are limp, frustrating or dry perhaps you need to give salsa (the dance, not the food) a try.

But wait; skip the article if youre single! Salsa is not just for couples who want to spice up their love lives on Valentines day only. Its a playful and fun dance, loaded with emotional, physical and social benefits for both couples and singles.Salsa has its roots from multiple countries and cultures: Cuban, Latin, African,Caribbean and you.

Despite the fact that there are basic steps to follow, salsa dance is a creative and unique form of self expression. The way you turn, move your hips and body and interpret the rhythm of the music is entirely up to you and your personalities.

There are eight beats to every measure of salsa music. A basic salsa step will have you moving on beats 1, 2, 3 and pause at 4 and moving again on 5, 6, 7 and pause at 8. The rhythm of the dance often comes from within you and your partner.

Sharing the experience of movement and music with your significant other can be very powerful and satisfying. Dancing can bring couples closer together and since salsa flirtations, it can inject sensuality and romance into your relationship.

Salsa requires teamwork to strengthen your relationship. But be prepared for some rough patches while learning. Learning to do anything can be frustrating and it is often easiest to vent out frustrations on those closest to you. Somepartners blame one another for not doing the steps right.

We ask couples to change partners throughout our classes because people are generally nicer and more patient with strangers.

Whether or not youre in a relationship and even if you have two left feet, the sauciness of salsa can spice up your relationship and life in general, so start your classes today too and enjoy beauty of salsa.

Differentiate Yourself through AIESEC in Tanzania

By: NSIA SWAI

Although Mama Daphne tried so hard to smile at John, Daphnes fiancé, her genuine smile came out as an ugly attempt of a crying woman. Half of her face was so badly scarred from a burn she had sustained many years ago and she was somewhat embarrassed by the scar. Indeed, she looked more like Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street horror movie.

Her left eye lacked eyebrows while her lower lip looked more

like that if a bird whose beak had been clipped. How could such an ugly woman have brought forth a girl so refined? The guests kept wondering inwardly but dared not ask as it is customary of African courtesy towards in-laws.

Welcome home our guests and make yourself comfortable, said Daphnes mother as she served the guests with drinks. Daphne was no doubt a beautiful and a disciplined village girl a role

WRITERS CORNER

model in her village and college where she studied economics. She cringed when anybody among the guests looked at her mother and wondered what they thought of the scars.

Daphne for once felt very embarrassed. Her future in-laws were here and there is nothing she could do about it. There was nowhere she could hide her mother. She decided to let the situation go just like that because a mother is mother. She seethed from inside, wishing that the fate had not bestowed her such as burden of proof. The visit by the in-laws had all along been fearing as it is customary, the in-laws have at certain point in time must be invited to pay the dowry. Even if they were wondering quietly about African customs demand one shouldnt be inquisitive.

Catherine thought about her late father. She wished that he was alive to share the moment. He had died of leukemia a couple of years ago. But how did these scars of love occur? Mama Daphne knew that the mystery had to come out to at least lift the lid of the mystery surrounding he scarred face. When the guests were in the middle of their meals, she cleared her throat and with emotion, she narrated thus; When Daphne was about two years old, a huge fire that razed down their home broke out. She and the neighbors were trying desperately to get into the house to rescue Daphne who was who had been sleeping in the house before the fire started. Indeed, most rescuers thought that the fire was too big for anyone to venture inside.

You might be wondering what happened to my face. Had I tried to save my face,

Daphne, the one who has gathered us here would have died twenty years ago, she said.

The gathering was very quiet as she went on narrating.

The roof was almost caving in as strong men pinned me not to rush to save my baby. All along I was screaming for someone to save my Daphne but all they said was that it was too late and I could also get killed, she went on.

All this time, the guests had stopped eating and were looking at her with their mouths open.

I slipped out of the hands of the men and rushed into the blazing house, groping in the

thick smoke. I knew where my baby was. In thick of the smoke, I covered her with a blanket and shot out of the house, she said crying.

Every woman started weeping silently. The men fidgeted uncomfortably. They looked from Daphne to her mother with awe and respect they did not have when they entered that gate.

The moment got out, I fainted but my little girl was alive. To date, whenever I look at my daughter it reminds of me of how I looked at her age, she said.

All men stood up, the women rushed and hugged Daphnes mother. Each felt guilty of prejudging such as noble woman.

You might be wondering what happened to my face. Had I tried to save my face, Daphne, the one who has gathered us here would have died twenty years ago, she said.

Can you let

us a bit into your life?

Yes. I was born in 1989 (July 08), I have a younger brother called Kev and younger sister called Monica. I went to Meru for my primary studies then Lighthouse Academy in Arusha for my secondary and then did my college

studies in America. I graduated in 2005 with degree in Recording Engineering & TV Broadcasting. My musical background has been a key to nurturing my interest in music video directing, singing, engagement in graphic design and to some extent, fashion. I can say that I am multi-talented performer. The musical seed was sown earlier in life by my father who used to sing back in 1980s. He actually owned a family studio (The Grand House) which he later handed down to me and renamed it Nisher Records & Entertainment under Westwood Corporation Company. We have been working since 1996 but came to be known in 2011.

Are you married, engaged or dating?I am currently single. I however dated someone for five years with whom we had planned to tie the knot. She left me citing my being so busy with my work. She also claimed that I had become a bit too famous. Can you cite a few jobs you feel are you have done well?I deal mainly with entertainment music. Videos I

have participated include Sitaogopa by Monica; Maisha ya Ujana by Shaa Bang; Mwanzo Mwisho by Gentrilz; Sijutii by Joh Makini which gave me landmark success. Others include Today by DC; Maktaba by Bonta; Listen by Belle 9; Press Play by DJ Choka (Vanessas first video that somewhat elevated me and gave me a chance to appear on TV). Im also proud of Ben Pols Jikubali as it made me go all over Africa and Feza Kessys Amani ya Moyo which aired on Big Brother Africa this year, Ghana and Botswana. The list is endless but memorable include Dole by Mabeste; Mama Yeyoo by G Nako featuring Ben Pol and many others.

What is the secret behind great video production? It is having at your fingertips the techniques

employed throughout pre-production, production and post-production phases and taking into consideration the minutest details. More often, artistes generate their own ideas especially new artistes. However, experienced artistes take ideas from us. The general trend is that I work with the concepts and design the script.

Who persuade you into video and music production?Among them are Director X (USA), Benny Boom (USA) and Usher Raymond who is my ultimate role model. Each time I look at his career, music and would love to work with him.

Some say that music industry is bumpy in Tanzania. What is your take on this?Mostly, building trust with the clients may be a bit tricky. Many require so much to be explained to the workings of a studio and why patience is important to produce a good video. The other snag has always been the equipment. They are expensive and need one to be very knowledgeable on how to use them there is a huge difference in the work produced using professional compared to semi-professional equipment. No doubt the industry is growing artistes ought to deliver the best they can deliver and not settle for less.

If youre called upon to alter Video Music scenario in Tanzania, what would be first to change?Create awareness about the quality and invest

more in the industry. Promotion of the products within and out the boarders is very important. So much Tanzanian music is played across East African region with little or no returns to the composers, produces and people in the line. I would change all this.

There is mushrooming of video producers at every corner. What future do you see out of this?Everyone wants to be a director. However, only the strong and creative directors see

the light of the day. Not every video is a video. The media outlets need to only front the very best. There is the need to be choosy on this.

How do you see yourself in a few years to come?My ambition is to see Nisher Entertainment scale to the highest levels of production across Africa a sort of a brand name.

What do you have to say to the youth?I am grateful to God for the talent, my family for being supportive. All I can say is that Tanzanians should learn to appreciate others arts we should focus on constructive and supportive criticisms.

As the quartet grew up, it was not lost to them that they needed to excel in school. In fact, their parents made it clear

that under no circumstances should they fail in their classes at the expense of their singing. As such, they had to learn from a tender age the value of discipline and proper time management. When away from school during their concerts, their teachers sent them online notes which they read during their rest periods. This ensured that the quartet were never really behind others in school. A-levels from Brookhouse International School and took a break last year before joining different Universities this year. levels this year.

These talented Maasai girls have beautiful voices (well trained by their father Nicholas Ole Moipei who is also their teacher). Specializing in Acapella, sometimes accompanied by various instruments, the quartet have cut a grand niche in the classical music, own compositions and various re-arrangements of existing music. The quartet is however of petite frame but their voices are larger than their sizes. Mary sings soprano, Magdalene deep alto, Martha soprano 2 and Seraphine alto. These Maasai sisters are arguably the youngest yet quite accomplished singers of our times. Here is their story;

Awards GaloreThese Maasai sisters are a music sensation in Kenya and the world at large. In 2002, their father, Nicholas Ole Moipei decided to enter them into the annual Kenya Music Festival, where they won in their category and since then, it has been one award after the other.

2006 was a breakthrough year for the quartet when they were crowned the first UNICEF Child Ambassadors to Kenya because of the role they play in fighting for the rights of children through their music.

In 2008, they glittered even further by being awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) by President Mwai Kibaki for the work theyre doing in promoting Kenya through their music.

Not to be stopped, the girls have performed for various dignitaries, different visiting Heads of States and in various forums throughout the world. They especially remember their performance at the World Urban Forum in Canada organized by UN Habitat.

Widely TravelledThe quartet has performed in various countries including; Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, South Korea, China, Venezuela and Canada. Venezuela remains their most memorable, because the African Festival was sensational. The people there were very friendly and their culture is highly flavored. We would not mind going back! They say.

In South Africa last year, they emerged the best gospel group in Africa at the prestigious Crown Gospel Music Awards, their tender age notwithstanding.

Daddys GirlsTheir father is their vocal coach and has been a great influence in their lives. The girls are

quick to acknowledge the selflessness of their parents. They have sacrificed a lot to see us where we are today. While dad made sure our voices were properly tuned, mum resigned from her formal job to take care of us as we grew. That is the ultimate sacrifice. Now that we are grown, Mum has gone back to employment. Our parents have continued to guide and give us the freedom of choosing what we want.

The quartet started by singing gospel music but of late they have developed some classical touch in their music so as to reach a wider audience. They are very versatile and they fuse all genres to come up with fresh music which they believe makes them unique. They pay a lot of attention to their practices, doing it every day for not less than three hours. Now that they have cleared high school, they are composing their songs and through the help of their manager, they are organizing concerts.

Cancer KittyThe Moipei have performed in many charity concerts to raise awareness about issues that affect their society. They have visited various hospitals to interact and sing for children suffering from cancer as the way of encouraging them. They hope to start a foundation for helping children suffering from cancer, something born out of what they have had to deal with. They are now writing songs to enlighten the people about cancer, and most importantly to let the world know that cancer is indeed manageable and curable. Their sister Seraphine suffered a brain tumor, everything changed and they

decided to change somebodys life

through their participation. They also

hope to continue working with UNICEF

in the future as they continue sensitizing

people on the issues affecting children.

The Silk name does not need introduction for those conversant with Kampalas night life. SILK LOUNGE is decidedly different from the other branches of the Silk franchise Club Silk and Silk Royale. While the

other two are set up for strictly dancing, with spacious dance floors and bar stools, the Lounge is different. Silk Lounge was set up for the reveler who wants to have a good time without necessarily dancing and sweating. Warm rugs decorate the walls and floor of the Lounge and huge flat screens give the place and other worldly feel. The sound system is always being upgraded to keep with the latest standards.

Coming third is CLUB AMNESIA which boasts of an execu-tive interior décor with a blue and white ceiling. The night spot is the answer for many revelers. It is a permanent home for lover of music in its modern and progressive form. Every first Friday of the month the club hosts Meet Kampalas top lawyers.

Want to dance to the latest tunes and vibe to some golden greats? Well CLUB D in Arusha is a right choice. This is an all luxurious sophisti-cated white venue that brings Vegas to Arusha with a state of the art sound and lighting system, a fully stocked bar offering some of the worlds finest liquor! The lounge offer luxury surroundings, good vibes, professional service and delicious cocktail!

SKYLUX LOUNGE is the freshest club in Nairobi. The club which has exquisite interior décor offers comfort and ambience. It is so spacious, with a high ceiling, unlike some clubs that have very low ceilings that make you feel closed in a container. Even the toilet is spacious enough that we counted up to eleven urinals for men.

A fighter pilot in the World War II found himself in a rather alarming and awkward situation. His plane had been hit by the enemy guns and half of one of wings had been blown off. The plane was doing all sorts of acrobatics in the air. At a certain stage, the plane was flying upside down and he all he could see was the blue of lake below him. He was terrified to death. Although trained in combat, this was horrifying to him.

While in that situation, he recalled his trainer telling him and others that no matter how dangerous a situation may be, always give your-self a second or two to think. Do not just panic. This is applicable in the real life circumstances. Many people act on impulse any time a crisis rears its ugly head. One, it is because most people are psychologically unprepared for such an eventuality and that adrenaline in their bodies will command them either to take a flight or fight back.

Following the recent Westgate terrorist attack, I thought it is important to know that a bit on how to react to crises. Some people reacting in crisis actually worsens their way thinking therefore causing more serious damage than there already is. They become so overwhelmed by the events that they leave no room for rational decisions. So much attention is often focused on the problem rather than possible solutions. People who are in the grip of a panic reaction do not think clearly. The self-preservation instinct

kicks in, and we experience an unrelenting sense of flight or fighting the situation and how we fight determines the outcome. Here is how;

in crisis

Take control of your own survivalRather than paying attention to what everyone else is doing, focus on yourself and your immediate family or group of friends. Assess the situation and look for an escape route. Creating and implementing an action plan that keeps you alert and moving forward, leaving little time for fear to intrude.

Ask for helpIn virtually any crisis, those who band together are more likely to survive. Pick someone in the crowd who seems relatively nonthreatening and ask him or her to work with you to get through the crisis. This humanizes the people around you as well as providing a potentially valuable ally.

Organize othersIf you are able to do so, take on a leadership role. Remember that the vast majority of people around you are reasonable, average people reacting to the immediate threat. Most people are willing to follow reasonable suggestions, and many will be thankful to have someone else take charge. Formulating a group plan and delegating responsibilities helps to stop the panic.

...he recalled his trainer telling him and others

that no matter how dangerous a situation

may be, always give your-self a second or two to think. Do not

just panic.
