Southern Honey Baked Ham

Chef Jack Hodge Mom always baked a Ham at Easter with Candied Sweet Potatoes, Mashed potatoes, Sweet Peas, Cole Slaw, Boiled and deviled eggs, celery sticks, corn bread, pinto beans and coconut cake. As I remember we always had pinto or white bean. Honey baked ham is always a favorite at holidays. The sweet flavor of the honey compliments the ham and makes a tasty meat even more delicious.

Ingredients:1 ham – 5 to 10 lb. prebaked (spiral cut ham will work but place cut end down)½ cup butter½ cup brown sugar¼ cup honey¼ cup prepared mustard1/8 cup pineapple juice or orange juice (can substitute with a light colored soft drink like Sprite or 7-Up)¼ tsp ground cloves

Directions: 1.Prepare pan large enough to hold ham and cooking juices by lining with aluminum foil – three layers minimum for easier clean up. 2.Combine butter, brown sugar, honey, mustard, liquid (juice or soft drink), and cloves in a double boiler

or in a heavy sauce pan sprayed with non-stick Pam. Heat on low until butter is melted and sauce is evenly mixed. 3.Place ham in foil lined pan and brush with warm glaze. 4.Turn oven to 325 degrees F and place ham in oven. 5.Brush on additional warm glaze (can be kept on very low heat or in a fondue pot to keep thin enough to spread on ham). Do this every 15 minutes or so. 6.Bake for around an hour to an hour and a half depending on the size and type of ham. Check directions on ham package for a better idea on exact cooking times as times do vary on types and sizes of hams. 7.If the sauce is not browned to perfection when ham is done, turn on broiler and heat for a few minutes until glaze caramelizes. Watch close and do not burn glaze. 8.Let rest for 10 minutes, slice at table, and serve. Until next time,, Stay in Gods care Jack Hodge, Phone (865) 453-3864e-mail [email protected], Web site www.jackhodge.com

Jack’s Cornerby Jack Hodge

Corey Brooks Band I have followed Corey Brooks ministry for quite some time now. I have written about him before in One Voice Magazine. Corey songs were showing up on charts and play list everywhere. Corey was in a movie, “Stuck in The Past” playing a bully. Now if you meet Corey you would never believe he could pull off this part. But he did. We sent away after the movie on DVD. My wife Linda and I sat down and watched the movie. What a good wholesome family movie. I highly recommend it. The movie can be purchased by going to www.christianbooks.com Cory has formed a band “The Corey Brooks Band” I am pleased to see Corey branching out.Read on about Corey, Matt and Craig. I asked Corey’s mother Lisa to send me some info about the young men in the group. Corey’s mom did a wonderful job, read on and you will see what I mean.

COREY BROOKS BAND BIO written by Lisa Brooks Matthew 28:19-20 says for us to go out into the entire world and make new disciples in His name. This highly motivated, talented and dynamic group is doing just that. Not concerned about fame or fortune, Corey Brooks, Matt Kelly and Craig Smith have left their individual ministries to join forces and hit the road hard in March 2010. Tour dates are packed with small outreach events such as public schools, colleges and nursing homes to large events such as festivals and concert venues opening for mainstream Christian artists. Matt and Craig, friends since grade school were inspired at a church service where two of their friends were doing a concert. “They inspired us to really do something for Him.” Matt says. Stepping out on faith the two began learning to play piano and guitar “We

both advanced faster on the piano than guitar.” Craig says. In 2007 committing their lives and talent to music ministry they formed a contemporary Christian band. It was quickly noticed that they were not only talented musicians but exceptional songwriters. Before they knew it they were playing regionally at churches, coffee houses and festivals. They also did

a year long outreach ministry as worship leaders at Celebrate Recovery that required them to be available one day a week. Their sole purpose at any event was to give glory to God and lead others to Christ. In 2009,

Matt and Craig found themselves looking for direction when two of the members left the band. Corey has always contributed his career decisions and love for music as a ‘God thing’. “When I was twelve, I KNEW God wanted me to do something. I did not realize that it was what I was already doing...singing, until almost a year later. It seems like before I knew it, He was taking me down paths I never dreamed, and I love it.” Corey says. Earlier in his career, Corey was playing regionally mainly at churches and youth events. By 2006 God had moved him into the

lime light with a Gospel Music Association ‘Dove’ nomination for Country Gospel Album of the Year. His music was then taken worldwide. He later received the President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement from the International Country Gospel Music Association and took home the win for New Artist of the Year from the Inspirational Country Music Awards, all among his most notable honors. However, he realized early on that the awards that God had blessed him with just opened doors to more places to share Jesus. Matt and Craig first met Corey in their teen years. As time passed they began doing some work together and keeping up to date with each other. In 2009 Corey achieved his first number one song in the US and was directed to move toward having live music. “At first, I thought I would have auditions for my musicians, but then God showed me so plainly that I was supposed to call Matt and Craig. I knew that my writing style had been changing over the past year, so I

did wonder what genre we would fit in if we did merge ideas and talent.” Corey says. Thru much prayer, the three decided that together they would make a stronger team than as individual ministries. They concluded that however long that God uses them as a team they can accomplish much more for His kingdom. “We are not going to be so concerned with genre but with content.”

The Corey Brooks Band says. Each has a personal relationship with Jesus that compels them to build relationships with others in hopes of making an eternal difference in peoples’ lives. These committed and talented musicians are a Christian band in every aspect. From their servant attitude, energetic playing, and anointed lyrics, they do not apologize for keeping Jesus in the forefront.

INDIVIDUAL BIOS written by Lisa BrooksMatt Kelly, 21, was born in Beckley West Virginia. He graduated High School in 2007 and began full time college at WVU Tech then going to Concord University to major in math education. In 2010 he began on-line college with Liberty University to receive his associates’ degree in Religion. He began music ministry in 2007. He is a songwriter and singer and his primary instrument is piano but he also plays guitar. Matt is excited for full time travel. Never being further than Florida, he is especially looking forward to his travels into Texas, Colorado and Utah. Matt says, “In the body of Christ, we all have different jobs but all jobs are important. Now that I am a part of a ministry that has so many different people doing the job they do best, I know that I can concentrate more on devotions and working on my musical skills.”Craig Smith, 21, was born in Beckley West Virginia. He graduated High School in 2007 and began full time college at WVU Tech majoring in Mechanical Engineering. In 2010 he began on-line college with Liberty University to receive his associates’ degree in Religion. He began music ministry in 2007. He is a songwriter and singer. His primary instrument is guitar but he also plays piano. Craig is looking forward to traveling and making a difference in so many lives. He is looking forward to seeing the scenery along the way, and thankful that he now has a driver and manager to take care of business. Craig says, “I never expected God to work in such a big

way. To know that my songs will go out on radio and touch people that I may never meet is just incredible to me.” Corey Brooks, 21, was born in Beckley West Virginia. He graduated High School in 2007 and began on-line college with Liberty University to receive his associates’ degree in Religion. He began music ministry in 2003. He is currently taking mandolin lessons and is lead singer for the group. Corey is looking forward to the travels that take him back to the places where he has made so many friends. “When I travel, it is almost like a family reunion at every stop. We have ‘family’ from the east to the west and I love seeing them all again!” Corey says, “When I look at the team that God has put together, I am excited to see how He will use us. We each are tuned in to God and just willing to go.” Booking info Church, school and speaking venuescontact Lisa at [email protected] 304-222-0017/ 304-934-6886Fairs, Festivals, & Other VenuesContact C & L Entertainment:[email protected] I feel blessed to know and call Corey a friend. As I sit here looking out of the window it is snowing. We have had a lot of snow this season. I know most of you, like me, can’t wait for Spring. I can hear the birds singing outside. They are looking for food and a place to keep warm. We feed our birds because at this time of year food for them is hard to find. When they sing it is almost like they are thanking us for thinking of them and their needs. April is a month of uncertainty. You never know if tomorrow will be warm and sunny or cold a snowy. Life is a lot like that. We never know when we awake each morning what our day is going to be like. Sure, we have things we plan on doing today but plans change like the seasons change and we often have to rearrange our lives to accommodate these changes. One thing we will never have to change is our certainty that God is there for us no matter what the season or the weather might be. He never promised us that there would never be storms in our lives but He does promise that He will be there for us and that we can lean on Him in times of need. Many times something comes up in our life that makes us worry how we are going to handle the situation. Whether it be money, family, health, etc. We try to work things out without thinking of asking God for His intervention and assistance. When we do this most of the time we only make things worse. If we would have put our faith in God in the beginning and asked for His help we would be in a better place from the beginning. I know I am not perfect and I sometimes fail to ask God to help me solve a problem. I know He is always there for me but I sometimes forget to ask Him for His help. Even though I do forget to ask He knows I need his assistance and He steps in anyway. That is because He loves me and cares for me. God never will put more on us then we can handle. He does expect us to confide in Him and ask Him to help us through these situations though. He will sometimes let us stroll along in our own little worlds and not interfere but if we are a child of the Lord, He will pull us back into the circle of His arms and help us even if we forget to ask Him for his help. We worry everyday about our children and if we are teaching them the things they need to know to

survive in this world. We send them to school everyday and help them with their homework. We take them to the library to research for a report they must do in class. We buy them items they need to do a science project. There is one thing that a lot of parents do not teach their children. We must also teach them about their Lord and Savior. This should be the number one subject that we teach our children but many of our children never hear anything about the Lord until they meet a friend who is from a Christian home and who goes to church regularly. Why are we not as faithful to take our children to church and to teach them about God as we are to help them prepare for a book report or a science project? Please, stop today and think of what is important in your childs life. Sure we want them to be successful in their adult lives. Sure we want them to have all the advantages that we did not have in life. But do we not want them to also have a home in heaven someday? Do we not want them to learn about God so they can teach our grandchildren right from wrong? Right now stop what you are doing and take a minute to ask God to lead, guide and direct you so you can teach your children and grandchildren about Him and how they should strive not only to be successful in man’s eyes but in Gods eyes also. After all, isn’t it more important that God loves us than man? Until next month. Go with God

Dance In the Rain I received this from Mary Ann Heller. This is something we all need to know. Read the story below. It was a busy morning, about8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’ He smiled as he patted my hand and said ‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’ I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, ‘That is the kind of love I want in my life.’ True love is neither Physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be. With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one that comes along that has an important message. This one I thought I could share with you. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; They just make the best of everything they have. I hope you share this with someone you care about. I just did. Life isn’t about how to survive the storm, But how to dance in the rain. Healing the Child WithinBy Dr. Wilma Banner Curtis

Will’s Story “It wasn’t your fault.” The psychologist (Robin Williams) spoke gently to Will Hunting (Matt Damon in the movie Good Will Hunting). “It wasn’t your fault.” Will’s head bent down slightly with his eyes refused to look up. He again shifted his weight as the doctor moved a step forward. “It was not your fault.” The doctor was close now. Will could not resist raising his eyes to see the compassion and love in the doctor’s face. With sobs of relief he threw himself into the willing arms of the doctor. As the tears came, years of guilt and shame for not rescuing his mother from the beatings of his father began to be released. The child within began to heal from the hurt and helplessness hidden deep in his memory. Then peace came.

Stormie’s Story Years of counseling helped Stormie Omartian heal emotionally from the effects of a mentally ill mother who locked her in a small closet, where she sat on a basket of dirty clothes until her mother remembered her or her father came home. Her mother’s verbal abuse led to years of feelings of futility, hopelessness, helplessness, and deep emotional pain. Because of the ever-present pain in her soul, it expressed itself through acts of self-destruction and a paralyzing fear that controlled her every breath.

The Child Within Lays The Foundation Most of us don’t have a psychologist or counselor who can help us understand how we can take the pain away from the present emotions by healing the child within. Perhaps you haven’t even given thought to having a child within. The child you once were laid a foundation for who you are today. The emotional traumas you faced as a child even now lives within and shapes your present existence. For example, her mother’s toxic words gave Stormie Omartian such a bad self image, she felt suicide was the only way out of the pain. What about Will Hunting? His self-destructive behavior was refusing to use his mathematical giftedness and building a wall which love could not penetrate. So as not to leave you hanging on their story,

Stormie and Will were both healed. If you are not familiar with her, Stormie has written many books: an autobiography, several books on the power of prayer, a book on nutrition, and a book on emotional healing. Will finally decided to take a job as a math professor and the movie ended with him driving off into the sunset in a beat-up old car going from the east coast to the west coast to chase the woman he finally allowed himself to love. Another example of how childhood trauma is acted out in adult life is the popular Midwest pastor who had a homosexual affair. When he was a small child, he was raped by a middle aged man. A Christian counselor uncovered this and with the love of his wife and congregation, he was healed. His wife’s book Why I Stayed tells his story if anyone is interested in knowing more about his struggle.

What About You? What childhood emotional traumas are still haunting your present life? When we accept Jesus as our Savior, God forgives us of our past behavior and we become “new creatures.” We now have a clean conscious. But what about those things which were done to us. Sometimes when we feel God’s touch, those emotions are healed instantly; however, most of the time healing is a slow process. It seems God does not want us to live our lives not needing Him. Simple incidents or words have the capacity to trigger emotional flashbacks which might produce either anger or fear. Unhealed trauma is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the physical symptoms of which may be a general feeling of anxiety or panic disorders, depression, loneliness, attachment disorders and addictions. Physical illnesses may also manifest themselves as well. One of the most common PTSD’s is from sexual abuse. If this applies to you or if you are helping someone though this trauma, you need to assume three things: First, the problem is treatable and you or the victim will survive. If this abuse were in the childhood, then it is past, and the person needs to heal from it. If abuse is still happening to a child, legal action is necessary. Secondly, the victim of sexual abuse if not responsible for that abuse. The reason most abuse victims feel responsible is because they feel they somehow allowed it and they didn’t tell. Most of the

time the abuse is caused by a trusted adult or the child is threatened by consequences if they tell. Feelings of shame and worthlessness have festered a long time; therefore, it may take a considerable amount of time to overcome and control those thoughts. Patience is important while waiting for the healing. Although the victim is not responsible for the abuse, they are responsible for allowing recovery to take place. Part of the key seems to be to leave the victim mentality and adapt a victory mentality. The evidence of this would be a feeling of freedom from the traumatic effects. Thirdly, the victim needs to express, accept, and deal with feelings of fear or anger and somehow forgive the person for the invasion. Dr. Ed Smith of Theophostic Ministries takes the person back through the memory until all the emotion is gone from that memory and there is only the sense of peace going back through the memory Feelings of being abandoned by God is sometimes prevalent. If the victim can somehow find purpose in the abuse, they can heal faster. For example, sometimes a woman will find solace in the fact that because she allowed the abuse, she kept her

If no other purpose can be established, one might think of identifying with the suffering of Jesus and understand that he suffered the shame of being crucified naked, by the hand of those who were supposed to be the “Godly” leaders and he was abandoned by all of his friends but John, the men in whom he had invested his time and effort. As I write this, my heart is heavy with desire to help someone out there gain some measure of “truth,” which will work it’s miracle in healing of the emotions. choline stimulates cell growth in the brain cells. Color of the eggshell does not dictate the nutri-tional value. White eggs are from the white-feathered hens with the white earlobes. Brown eggs are from the red-feathered chickens with red ear lobes. Brown eggs may be more expensive because the chickens that produce them are heavier eaters and are more expensive to raise. Their eggs may be larger at times. We had Rhode Island Reds and White Rock chickens on our property. A cooked egg has 77 calories. I guess the best idea is to eat the egg that suites you best and follow your doctor’s advice. Our children bought us chickens for Christ-mas. Not chickens for here, but to be sent to a third world country through mission efforts. This is a good investment. These gifts of chickens will help produce many more chickens and also provide food for people. A chicken can lay 250 eggs a year. No wonder they get up with the sunrise and go to bed at sunset. Scripture mentions eggs one time when Jesus is comparing good things and bad. He says, “ If a son asks for an egg, will he (his father) offer him a scorpion?” Luke 11:12 (KJV) I remember asking one of my Sunday school teachers a question about the trinity." How can there be three persons in one?" She explained it to me using the egg. The outer shell is like the Father, the white is the Holy Spirit and the yolk is like Jesus. They are three different substanc-es, but are one. The can all be separated the shell comes off and the white can be separated from the yolk. Bird egg shells come in all colors to meet the need. God is the Father of all and meets the needs of all people of all colors and creeds. The Holy Spirit makes things clear to us and guides us in our life. Jesus prayed to the Father to send the Holy Sprit, the comforter, to us when He ascended. Jesus is the center of all and intercedes for us to the Father. I am grateful for the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit. Three in One.

know I have made a world with people on it. If I could only remember where I put it.” Our God {who doesn’t forget things} except our sins that have been forgiven because of JESUS, he remembers us. God is a very present help in the time of need,{in our time of need.} In all my 62 years I cannot remember a time I did not need him to help me. We are now living in such uncertain times, and as I hear about earth quakes in many places it is for sure we need him now. God has not forgotten where we are among the vastness of ALL he has made. Let us not forget who he is, I know some people are trying to take all mention of GOD from our sight and thinking. I want to offer another thought at this point, with God it is not out of sight, out of mind as it is with many of us. If or if not we choose to acknowledge him as supreme, he is still SUPREME. As we go thru this year of uncertain times please remember; God loves us and wants the best for us. I pray that everyone will consider who God is and he loves us and provides for us. May GOD grant each of you a wonderful day, and peace will be in your hearts. As God loves us we should surely love one another and pray for each other. Christians, I encourage you to stay strong in the Lord. May I encourage everyone to think about where you stand with God, It’s just about hometime. Are Doctors Discovering the Value of Praying With Patients by Dr. Rickey A. Nation, Ph.D.

As a Counselor, I see the need of spirituality in counselling. It is my conviction that spirituality cannot be separated from counselling. Spirituality meaning- prayer, God, the Holy Spirit, and Christian principles (command, truths, and promises found in the Bible). I make spirituality a vital part of our work with counselees. However, not everyone shares that viewpoint, but it is catching on. One place it is catching on is in the medical profession. More and more doctors are beginning to pray with and for their patients. Prayer plays an important role in the lives of many people. Throughout history, also, prayer has been vital. There are recorded prayers

Showers of Blessingsby Laura West Ralph Waldo Emerson observed that if the constellations appeared only once in a 100 years what an exciting event that would be but be-cause they are there every night we barely look. How very true his words ring. Is that how we become towards all the blessings our Heavenly Father bestows on us every day? I love the idea a friend of mine suggested and that was to make yourself a Blessing Box. A box that you will use each and every day. Each morning write down one thing you are thankful for or a funny experience you went through or maybe a random at of kindness someone showed you. Put that in the box and every day that you are struggling or feeling down get that box and open it and read each thing you have previously dropped in it. This will help you to recall how great God has truly been to you and your loved ones. What are some of the blessings from God? 1. Knowing your sins are forgiven: Ephesians 1:7 “ In Him we have redemption through His blood, the for-giveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” We are forgiven and what better blessing could we get than that! I don’t know about you but I need that every single day of my life. Usually I need it within five minutes of putting my feet on the floor. 2. We are adopted by God: Ephesians 1 :5 “ He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Je-sus Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will.” We were not born into him but through his death on the cross and our accepting him as Lord and Savior we can be adopted. We become children of God. I have an adopted daughter and I can tell you that I love her as much as I do my own birth children. It is as if I carried her in my womb and gave birth to her. She is mine and was bought with a price and that price was my families willingness to take her in and love her unconditionally. Nothing can take that love we have for her away. That is how God feels towards us. Nothing can separate us from his love for us. 3. We can know his will: Ephesians 1: 9 “ And He

from famous men as well as speeches containing prayer or addressed to God as prayers from such men as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln to recently President Clinton urging Americans to pray for the survivors of the Jonesboro, Arkansas, shooting. Prayer can be defined as “...the contact of a living soul with God. In prayer, God stoops to kiss man, to bless man, and to aid in everything that God can devise or man can need,” according to E.M. Bounds, a great man of faith. Prayer works in the lives of people because it activates an individuals faith; and God can work based upon the particular belief of an individual as rooted and ground in the Bible. Accordingly, prayer works because God is true and faithful to His character and nature. To some people, prayer is a mystery but the principles of prayer are given in Matt. 6:9-15. Once applied and practiced, these principles will work in the area of prayer. Applying these principles can, also, promote healing both physically and emotionally, as many doctors are beginning to discover. For example, Dr. Sally Knox, a well respected heart surgeon at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, has made a practice of praying with her patients. She is very sensitive to the beliefs of an individual and does not force prayer, but through discernment can usually tell which would be open to prayer. Many of her patients have commented on how relieved they are when Dr. Knox prays for them and how that increases trust in the patient-physician relationship. Another doctor who prays with patients is Dale A. Matthews, M.D. who is also an associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He is author of the book The Faith Factor: Proof of the Healing Power of Prayer. Dr. Matthews states there is evidence of the healing power of prayer. Moreover, not everyone is healed who is prayed for, but they are calmer and experience a greater sense of peace throughout the medical condition/problem. Prayer is beneficial, but God is all sufficient. God has recently healed a chronic sinus problem in my life in great part because of prayer. If your physician does not pray with you or if you are in counseling and your counselor does not pray with you, encourage him or her to do so. Getting them a copy of this article may be of

benefit to the professional you are working with.

made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure which he purposed in Christ.” We can know his will for our life. All you have to do is seek his face and ask him to lead you into the perfect plan he has for you and he will show you. He didn’t adopt us as his own to just leave us out there to figure it out on our own. He has a purpose for every one of us. 4. Inheritance: Ephesians 1:11 “ In Him we were also chosen having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.” One of the greatest bless-ings of all I believe is the assurance of knowing that one day we will be in Heaven with our Father. All that is his belongs to us. If he never did another single thing for us that in itself is more than enough. Yet each and every day he continues to pour out more and more blessings on us. Don’t take those things for granted. I only took the time to mention a very few of the many wonder-ful blessings. I encourage you to take the time over the next 365 days and write down a blessing a day and put it in your Blessing Box. As the old hymn says:
