In Tankwa Town, Karoo, this is normal:
1. You can’t sell anything, and you can’t buy anything. Apart from ice. 2. There’s a camp that sells Lost Mind Insurance. Some need it.3. An enormous wooden sculpture with eight heads burns on the Saturday night. This is the San Clan.
Giuseppe Russohttp://www.onesmallseed.net/profile/1c2gnlxxqj9e9
4. There’s a post office – Burning Mail – that will deliver your postcards in Tankwa Town, and in the default world. 5. Rangers are the nearest thing to a community police force. Only they don’t lay down rules, they simply mediate, and make sure people don’t hurt themselves.
Giuseppe Russohttp://www.onesmallseed.net/profile/1c2gnlxxqj9e9
6. Mutant vehicles prowl the desert: bunny slipper bikes, sharks on wheels and mobile couches.7. When darkness falls, Tankwa Town erupts into a wild show of flames, LEDs, EL wire and lasers.8. There are no spectators, only participants.

HUGZ THE GIANT HUGGING PANDA
Saturday night in Tankwa Town. I became a giant hugging panda, complete with fur and blinking LED lights spelling out my name and purpose: HUGZ. My plan? To go from camp to camp hugging out good vibes. I figured there’d be 10, maybe 20 hugs at most before people would get bored of me. Over 150 hugs later, HUGZ was a flippen hit! Cries of “OMG it’s a panda!” and “Can I get a hug?” followed by what can only be described as absolute “panda-monium” filled the night. Girls, guys, DJ’s, kids... there was enough of HUGZ for everybody who wanted some. I even met a lovely little female panda on the dance floor, which just topped my night off in the most perfect of ways. The next morning, my back felt broken. I could hardly move, but the agony was well worth the joy HUGZ had brought the night before. Well worth the stories I kept hearing from smiling faces about the mysterious hugging panda that roamed Tank-wa Town. Can’t wait to take him to Burning Man in August. Get ready Black Rock City, HUGZ is coming...

The roar of the Dragon resonating to all the Village people to prepare for a night, a night full of mystical happenings, unlimited love and a life-changing experience in Wonderland.
I was sent to gather content: I dived right into the heart of the festival, without knowing anyone. I travelled with ’the Temple crew’ who had the task of building the Solace Temple - a place of retreat from the abnormal delirium that goes on in Tankwa Town. Waking up at first light was a trivial challenge in contrast to the actual sweat and effort that went into fighting the zealous desert conditions.
I felt lost with an unusual group of happy hippie strangers. I did not know how to act or who to be; the sense of self I had was tested. This place makes you forget how you think you see yourself. It’s amazing feeling renewed and having the chance to function as whomever in the new society.
Before we even got there I thought I had found a utopia. Is too much freedom a bad thing? I guess I have never truly released
Day Two and the lines of normality had started to blur, ‘what is normal?’ and ‘what is this place?’
I think that those who thought the ’60s or ’80s were over, were wrong. This is a place where no money is accepted, where a new community arises and you embrace whatever persona you choose… any era is real if you want it to be.
While I was there I did not want to know who the people were, or what they did in the other world. I wanted them to be the magic I meet, and I wanted that to stay there. Everyone released who they were in such a unique way; I did not want clouds of judgment. Such a place is like a dream, I knew my time would come and then go. And I was ok with that.
I remember thinking that we are no-one outside this place, everything is so differ-ent; the other world was so far away, literally, and in my mind. I realize how stupid I was in thinking I would have time to read a Men’s Health for entertainment. In the reality I live I am free. I choose peace, and it flows through me. I was the only one with wide eyes and I began to see how you can spot a first-time Burner, with ’Cool’ definitely being the overheard word of my trip. I found peace in the magical place. Now to imagine those stars again…. I so quickly got used to that vast majestic landscape
Or realized?
on my way back i was gifted with this poem which would love to share.
“The Africa Desert where magic turns realunexpectedly inapplicable only tells how i feelrunning through my mind with relentless persist
i’m asking how such a place can existI rode the storm & witnessed the flame
wondering how is my mind still the sameunlimited enjoyment, Just what the soul yearned
never will i forget the time that Africa Burned “

Voices of the Ancestors
Performance Piece for the burning of Temple Solace, written and performed by Lara Kirsten
Let the Voices of the Ancestorsshake the Walls of our Temples
Let their Voices strike Deep into the Heart of our Beingsand sing the Harmonies of Solace into our Souls
Let the Voices of the Ancestorsbreak open over the Plains
and sing over the entire Earththe Song that sounds in our Dreams
and goes and sit in the Marrowuntil it transforms our Bodies
into one Transcendental Wave
Jutta http://www.onesmallseed.net/profile/jutta
Let the Voices of the Ancestorsbe Fire in our Souls
Let them Sing into the Agelessness of Timeand make us believe We are Beauty
We are Sun We are RiverWe are Stone We are Air
We are that which gives us Life
Let the Voices of the Ancestors burn with the Celebration of Breathburn with the glistening Peaks of Waves
burn with the Memory of Primordial Frequenciesthat once reverberated in our Primal Ears
Yes, let the Voices of the Ancestors burn with the Desireto have the Flaming Power be lead through our Veins
and free our Soular Potential
Let the Voice of Fireshow us the Road to Sacred Togetherness
Let the Finger of Fire point the Way to Utter ReleaseLet the Eye of Fire light the Paths of Transformation
Fire sings in One Languagethat all Clay and Skin fathom without Cerebrality
It is the Unrest of Firethat challenges our Sense of Peace
It is the Embrace of Firethat teaches us to stand Together and Love
Let the Voices of the Ancestors riselike the Flame riseslike the Tide rises
Let their Voices vibrateLet their Voices cascade through our Souls
and let us Live Livelier than ever before
We the Living also have Voices that SingVoices that Weep
We are voices that come alive as soon asBreath and Soul is Born
Let our Voices break through the Desertsbreak through the Forests
break through the OceansLet Fish and Bird hear We can
Resonate With Song just as They can do
The Vast Space begs to be filledwith that Sweeping Line of Voice
that colours Space with that Wondrous Harmonythat is so strongly at Home in our Souls
I want to be there where the Soul singsbecause of this Life’s Blessedness
Let us give Love through our VoicesLet us share this Voice we have had from Birth
Thank you Sun, Thank you Fire for bringing Solacein the Dark, Cold and Lonely Days
With your Light we can see to the Edges of the Worldwith your Warmth we can believe in our Dreams
The Voices of FireThe Voices of the Ancestors
The Voices of the LivingLet them resonate together
in one Brilliant HarmonyLet no Voice be silenced!
We all can SingWe all want to SingWe all need to Sing
We all can BurnWe all want to BurnWe all need to Burn
If we Raise our Voices, let it be in Song! When we Light a Fire, let it be in our Hearts!

You multicoloured, costumed, creative beau-ties - you blew us all away this year!
Over 5000 of us descended on Tankwa Town between 25 and 30 April this year to play, dance, laugh, create and share works of art, amazing spectacles, pure joy, and mo-ments of breath-taking gobsmacking beauty and spontaneity. Once again, AfrikaBurn has served as a reminder of something bigger and better than the sum of its parts, something fearless and fabulous. And it was simply aston-ishing!
There were 81 registered artworks or instal-lations this year, and 64 registered theme camps. And while not all of these managed the leap from imagination to Binnekring in the end, there were also several surprise pieces spotted around Tankwa Town. And some sur-prise performances as well, along with 14 reg-istered performances and events, and at least 32 marvelously mutated art vehicles. That’s a whole lot of creative juice and a whole lot of joy!
And then of course, there was The Storm. Reminding everyone who was boss, it came from the Northwest, and it knocked a lot of Tankwa Town ass over kettle. Quite a few large
Barend Löeter http://www.onesmallseed.net/profile/BarendLoeter
scale (and a few smaller) artworks were dam-aged. Among them were Carrot Egg (T-Rex & the Boxing Bunnies), Dragon, Khamsin and Owl Father Hoot Art In Heaven. The storm didn’t spare the theme camps either - Good Clean Fun, Do-main and the LEDHEDz all took a beating, as did others. Also taking a beating - the road into Af-rikaBurn, the vehicles on it and the areas where desperate campers drove haphazardly to avoid pools of water. And then there was the newly proclaimed Lake DMV. But at the end of it all, nobody was seriously injured, and in the spirit of communal effort everyone pulled together to re-build, repair and reinvent. The show went on, and what a spectacular show it was!
To all who helped bring a theme camp, an art car, an artwork, a performance, an event, or an act of gifting to Tankwa Town, to all who volun-teered their time and energy and got involved - a great big thank you. You are AfrikaBurn!
