One of Australia’s premier yacht clubs overlooking the Manly Boat Harbour, the Royal
Queensland Yacht Squadron is proud of its long history which stretches back over 130 years and
still to this day is “the place” for boaties to meet, compete and socialise.
The Squadron has evolved into a multi-faceted organisation and members, some third and fourth
generation families, enjoy a comprehensive range of facilities, both on and off the water.
Some of the best facilities in the world are on offer at the Squadron, in an ideal location, for
boaties who need a berth, want to sail competitively, or just need somewhere to store or launch
their boat for cruising, a fishing trip on the bay or further afield.
While you’re on shore there are wide open spaces, grassed areas and the Club House with the
Squadron Restaurant and the Boardwalk Cafe.
The Squadron offers a comprehensive range of sailing related activities. Children and adults alike
are taught to sail in a fun, safe, supervised environment, and further development training for
sailors who want to race competitively is offered. The Sailing Academy offers a range of courses
and programs throughout the year to help develop and advance your skills and knowledge.
Visit the RQYS website for more information about the Squadron, or just ask one of our friendly
staff members!
Located on Manly’s Royal Esplanade, the RQYS Sailing Academy can be found in the first building near
the first carpark, next to Marine Training Queensland. The Sailing Academy has courses and programs
for all ages 6 and over, catering to people learning to sail and people developing and advancing their

Tackers
TACKERS 1 ‘Having Fun’
is a safe & enjoyable introductory course to dinghy sailing which prepares students for Tackers 2.
The course is also an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential knowledge that
will allow the students the freedom of sailing small boats (Optimist) with the guidance from the
Instructors. The children sail with a partner (2 to a boat). At the completion of this level the students
will be issued with the Yachting Australia Tackers 1 Qualification.
TACKERS 2 ‘Tricks and Techniques’
similarly to Tackers 1, prepares students for the next level up – Tackers 3. Level 2 is an introduction to
sailing – but on their own (1 to a boat). The aim of the course is to build on the students’ skills and
knowledge that was assembled in Tackers 1, enabling the participant to safely and competently
sail a small boat (Optimists) in controlled conditions (light winds, open waters) without guidance. At the
completion of this course, if all skills are demonstrated, students will be issued with the Yachting
Australia Tackers 2 Qualification.
TACKERS 3 ‘Sailing Fast’
prepares students to join the RQYS Green Fleet as the aim of this course is to introduce sailors to
competitive sailing. It builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Tackers 1 and 2, and will enable the
child to manoeuvre the boat efficiently in light to moderate conditions on all points of sailing. This
course is designed to equip the sailor with enhanced skills and awareness of the surrounding
environment and focuses on refining enhanced boat handling skills including speed control and
manoeuvres and introducing participants to basic racing tactics and strategies. Upon the completion of
Tackers 3, if the students are ready, skill-wise, students will be awarded with the Yachting Australia
Tackers 3 Qualification, and have the opportunity to join the RQYS Green Fleet if they wish.
Green Fleet & Blue Squad
The Green Fleet is a youth training group offered as a follow-up of Tackers level 3, as it acts as a
‘bridge’ program to the youth racing/competitive squads – Blue (Intermediate) Squad, and White
Squad. Green Fleet generally consists of sailors aged 10 – 14, however there are no age restrictions.
Green Fleet carries on from the elements and concepts revised in Tackers 3; and essentially teach
the students to sail and race competently enough in Optimists and Sabots to join the Blue
Intermediate Squad.
Blue Squad is the Junior Optimist and Sabot Intermediate class – essentially a level up from Green
Fleet. The squad is coached by our Club Coach, Brady Lowe, along with other coaches. The
participants do routine-race drills and are continually developing their skills further with the view to
competing at State level competition.
There is an off-season fee of $10.00 per week for Green Fleet & Blue Squad. Also, there are a limited
amount of available hire-optimists which cost $150.00 per term for a maximum of 2 terms, for Green
Fleet & Blue Squad participants only. These 2 training squads are run every Saturday morning from
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM during the School term.
Junior or Young Adult membership is a prerequisite for joining the Youth Squads
White Squad
The White Squad sails in Flying 11s, Lasers, and Hobie 16’s, and trains on a regular basis, and have
competed at competitions on the National Circuit. The White Squad is coached by our Club Coach
and State Laser Coach, Brady Lowe. The White Squad program has differing fees for Summer and
Winter programs. Please contact the Sailing office if you are looking to get into a Youth Class and join
White Squad.
Junior or Young Adult membership is a prerequisite for joining the Youth Squads

PADDLEBOARDING COURSES COMING
TO RQYS SOON!
The RQYS Sailing Academy offers a range of Adult courses in both Keelboats and Dinghies, and caters for all ages over 14 years, and experience levels. Generally, all courses are hosted in Keelboats (Elliott 6’s) other than the Better Sailing and the Better Racing courses, which are both hosted in Dinghies (Pacers). The Adult courses are not just for ‘mature aged’ students – they’re for anyone who is older than 13.
Start Crewing & Helming Course The Start Crewing and Helming course is a beginner’s course and only teaches the basics of sailing. This course is for adults and teenagers who are looking to build or improve skills – exclusively crewing and helming on a boat. The Start Crewing & Helming course delivers both the Start Crewing and Start Helming courses, and is a sturdy introduction to the basics of sailing on a small boat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. Upon completion, participants will understand how to control and manipulate the different parts of the boat in order to create power and momentum on the water. The course also touches on other essential areas including weather, tides and other general safety procedures and rules. Upon completion of this course, students will have the ability to sail in light to moderate conditions unassisted by an instructor. This course is highly recommended for those with and without sailing experience. It readies students for other courses RQYS holds including Start Skippering, Better Sailing and Spinnakers.
