One Last Chance!

Jonah:

Jon 1:1 One day the LORD told Jonah, the son of Amittai, Jon 1:2 to go to the great city of Nineveh and say to the people, "The LORD

has seen your terrible sins. You are doomed!" Jon 1:3 Instead, Jonah ran from the LORD. He went to the seaport of Joppa

and bought a ticket on a ship that was going to Spain. Then he got on the ship and sailed away to escape.

Jon 1:4 But the LORD made a strong wind blow, and such a bad storm came up that the ship was about to be broken to pieces.

Jon 1:5 The sailors were frightened, and they all started praying to their gods. They even threw the ship's cargo overboard to make the ship lighter. All this time, Jonah was down below deck, sound asleep.

Jon 1:6 The ship's captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep at a time like this? Get up and pray to your God! Maybe he will have pity on us and keep us from drowning."

Jon 1:7 Finally, the sailors got together and said, "Let's ask our gods to show us who caused all this trouble." It turned out to be Jonah.

Jon 1:8 They started asking him, "Are you the one who brought all this trouble on us? What business are you in? Where do you come from? What is your country? Who are your people?"

Jon 1:9 Jonah answered, "I'm a Hebrew, and I worship the LORD God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

Jon 1:10 When the sailors heard this, they were frightened, because Jonah had already told them he was running from the LORD. Then they said, "Do you know what you have done?"

Jon 1:11 The storm kept getting worse, until finally the sailors asked him, "What should we do with you to make the sea calm down?"

Jon 1:12 Jonah told them, "Throw me into the sea, and it will calm down. I'm the cause of this terrible storm."

Jon 1:13 The sailors tried their best to row to the shore. But they could not do it, and the storm kept getting worse every minute.

Jon 1:14 So they prayed to the LORD, "Please don't let us drown for taking this man's life. Don't hold us guilty for killing an innocent man. All of this happened because you wanted it to."

Jon 1:15 Then they threw Jonah overboard, and the sea calmed down. Jon 1:16 The sailors were so terrified that they offered a sacrifice to the

LORD and made all kinds of promises. Jon 1:17 The LORD sent a big fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside

the fish for three days and three nights.

Jon 2:9 But with shouts of praise, I will offer a sacrifice to you, my LORD. I will keep my promise, because you are the one with power to save.

Jon 2:10 The LORD commanded the fish to vomit up Jonah on the shore. And it did.

Jon 3:1 Once again the LORD told Jonah Jon 3:2 to go to that great city of Nineveh and preach his message of doom. Jon 3:3 Jonah obeyed the LORD and went to Nineveh. The city was so big

that it took three days just to walk through it. Jon 3:4 After walking for a day, Jonah warned the people, "Forty days from

now, Nineveh will be destroyed!" Jon 3:5 They believed God's message and set a time when they would go

without eating to show their sorrow. Then everyone in the city, no matter who they were, dressed in sackcloth.

Jon 3:6 When the king of Nineveh heard what was happening, he also dressed in sackcloth; he left the royal palace and sat in dust.

Jon 3:7 Then he and his officials sent out an order for everyone in the city to obey. It said: None of you or your animals may eat or drink a thing. Each of you must wear sackcloth, and you must even put sackcloth on your animals. You must also pray to the LORD God with all your heart and stop being sinful and cruel. Maybe God will change his mind and have mercy on us, so we won't be destroyed.

Jon 3:8 (SEE 3:7) Jon 3:9 (SEE 3:7) Jon 3:10 When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.

Jon 4:1 Jonah was really upset and angry. Jon 4:2 So he prayed: Our LORD, I knew from the very beginning that you wouldn't destroy Nineveh. That's why I left my own country and headed for Spain. You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone, not even foreigners.

Jon 4:11 In that city of Nineveh there are more than a hundred twenty thousand people who cannot tell right from wrong, and many cattle are also there. Don't you think I should be concerned about that big city?

Well woman:

Joh 4:3 Jesus left Judea and started for Galilee again. Joh 4:4 This time he had to go through Samaria, Joh 4:5 and on his way he came to the town of Sychar. It was near the field

that Jacob had long ago given to his son Joseph.

Joh 4:6 The well that Jacob had dug was still there, and Jesus sat down beside it because he was tired from traveling. It was noon, and after Jesus' disciples had gone into town to buy some food, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her, "Would you please give me a drink of water?"

Joh 4:7 (SEE 4:6) Joh 4:8 (SEE 4:6) Joh 4:9 "You are a Jew," she replied, "and I am a Samaritan woman. How

can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won't have anything to do with each other?"

Joh 4:10 Jesus answered, "You don't know what God wants to give you, and you don't know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life."

Joh 4:11 "Sir," the woman said, "you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water?

Joh 4:12 Our ancestor Jacob dug this well for us, and his family and animals got water from it. Are you greater than Jacob?"

Joh 4:13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again.

Joh 4:14 But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life."

Joh 4:15 The woman replied, "Sir, please give me a drink of that water! Then I won't get thirsty and have to come to this well again."

Joh 4:16 Jesus told her, "Go and bring your husband." Joh 4:17 The woman answered, "I don't have a husband." "That's right,"

Jesus replied, "you're telling the truth. You don't have a husband. You have already been married five times, and the man you are now living with isn't your husband."

Joh 4:18 (SEE 4:17) Joh 4:19 The woman said, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Joh 4:20 My ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say

Jerusalem is the only place to worship." Joh 4:21 Jesus said to her: Believe me, the time is coming when you won't

worship the Father either on this mountain or in Jerusalem. Joh 4:22 You Samaritans don't really know the one you worship. But we Jews

do know the God we worship, and by using us, God will save the world. Joh 4:23 But a time is coming, and it is already here! Even now the true

worshipers are being led by the Spirit to worship the Father according to the truth. These are the ones the Father is seeking to worship him.

Joh 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship God must be led by the Spirit to worship him according to the truth.

Joh 4:25 The woman said, "I know that the Messiah will come. He is the one we call Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

Joh 4:26 "I am that one," Jesus told her, "and I am speaking to you now."

Joh 4:27 The disciples returned about this time and were surprised to find Jesus talking with a woman. But none of them asked him what he wanted or why he was talking with her.

Joh 4:28 The woman left her water jar and ran back into town. She said to the people,

Joh 4:29 "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Could he be the Messiah?"

Joh 4:30 Everyone in town went out to see Jesus. Joh 4:31 While this was happening, Jesus' disciples were saying to him,

"Teacher, please eat something." Joh 4:32 But Jesus told them, "I have food that you don't know anything

about." Joh 4:33 His disciples started asking each other, "Has someone brought him

something to eat?" Joh 4:34 Jesus said: My food is to do what God wants! He is the one who sent

me, and I must finish the work that he gave me to do. Joh 4:35 You may say that there are still four months until harvest time. But

I tell you to look, and you will see that the fields are ripe and ready to harvest.

Joh 4:36 Even now the harvest workers are receiving their reward by gathering a harvest that brings eternal life. Then everyone who planted the seed and everyone who harvests the crop will celebrate together.

Joh 4:37 So the saying proves true, "Some plant the seed, and others harvest the crop."

Joh 4:38 I am sending you to harvest crops in fields where others have done all the hard work.

Joh 4:39 A lot of Samaritans in that town put their faith in Jesus because the woman had said, "This man told me everything I have ever done."

Joh 4:40 They came and asked him to stay in their town, and he stayed on for two days.

Joh 4:41 Many more Samaritans put their faith in Jesus because of what they heard him say.

Joh 4:42 They told the woman, "We no longer have faith in Jesus just because of what you told us. We have heard him ourselves, and we are certain that he is the Savior of the world!"
