Safeguards the health
of animals, people, and
the environment
One Health…
• Promotes optimal health for people,
animals, and the environment (AVMA, 2014)
• Requires integrative effort across multiple
disciplines
• Is part of Veterinary Services’ (VS)
Strategic Direction

VS’ Role in One Health
• Mission: Safeguarding the health of
animals, people and the
environment
• One Health is integral to VS’ operations
• Strong emphasis on education:
– Expanding in-service training in OH
– Contributing to veterinary education – 5-10 externs and graduate students/yr

Mutual Benefits• Meet requirements for a Master’s of Public
Health (MPH) degree
• Gain One Health (OH) knowledge and expertise
• Develop training materials for VS epidemiologists focused on OH principles and competencies
• Strengthen VS OH Training and Education Framework
4
Methods
• Defined shared epidemiologic and OH training objectives:• Recognize indicators of a potential disease outbreak
• Apply knowledge of steps involved in a disease outbreak investigation to effectively control the outbreak and prevent further disease spread.
• Identified key epidemiologic and OH core competencies met by training
Safeguards the health
of animals, people, and
the environment
Core Competencies Targeted
• Fostering effective communication and
information sharing
• Collaboration
• Conflict resolution
• Leadership and Systems Thinking to identify
issues and formulate solutions to OH
problems
• Planning and management of OH responses

Scenario Development• Based on Epidemic Intelligence Service training
• Defined disease agent selection criteria
• Disease agent selection: Brucella suis
– Biologic Plausibility
– One Health Impact
– Public Health concern with need for multidisciplinary response
• Literature review and consultation with subject matter experts

Scenario Training Delivery
• Table-top disease outbreak scenario
• 14 Participants: 4 table groups
• Facilitators led the group through disease
outbreak investigation
• Scenario designed for first day of a 3 day

One Health Disease
Outbreak Scenario
• Problem: Human outbreak of brucellosis
• Request: Assistance in identifying risk factors
• Data analysis: Epidemiologic analyses
• Control of disease: Trace-back, disease
surveillance, risk assessment
• Key message mapping: Communication to
stakeholders

the environment
Results: Training Delivery
• Overall satisfaction = 4.68 out of 5
• Participants identified “things that went
well” as:
– time allocation
– structure of course
– “everyone in class was engaged in
discussions and shared varied viewpoints,
information, and thoughts”

Discussion
• Successful method for building OH
competencies
• Great potential collaborations with other
universities, agencies and stakeholders
– Additional student projects
– Built a library of outbreak scenarios
– Explore additional collaboration with CDC to
incorporate OH competencies into EIS
training scenarios
