Facts About Ovarian Cancer 38

How You Can Help 39

The mission of the Marsha Rivkin Center is to

save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment,

early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer.

We fund the best scientists, develop the brightest minds, and

encourage the strongest research partnerships.

Since its inception in 1996, the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research has been a catalyst for the national and international research community to find solutions to ovarian cancer. A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Marsha Rivkin Center looks beyond institutional boundaries and works collaboratively to find a cure for ovarian cancer. Founded by renowned oncologist Saul E. Rivkin, MD, in memory of his wife who succumbed to ovarian cancer, the Marsha Rivkin Center works collaboratively with its distinguished partners: Swedish Medical Center, the Northwest region’s largest cancer treatment facility, and Fred

Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, internationally recognized for its pioneering research and home to three Nobel Laureates.

Research funding from the Marsha Rivkin Center supports innovative scientific investigators at leading institutions throughout the country and beyond; several initiatives of which have led to major national research studies—including a $12-million National Institute of Health Specialized Program in Research Excellence.

Thank you for your vital role in promoting research to advance science’s understanding of the prevention, early detection, and improved treatment of ovarian cancer. Your participation is so important. The Rivkin Center does not receive federal support. Instead we leverage private philanthropy to encourage leading researchers and research institutions to prioritize this disease and to foster novel research that can further influence the direction of larger federal funding towards ovarian cancer.

With your help we continue to achieve progress in our mission to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer. The best and the brightest are working to find a solution. But to truly reach a breakthrough in the mortality of this disease, it will require an increased and sustained effort from the scientific and public communities alike. Without this support many promising research directions would not be possible.

I am so inspired and grateful each year by the dedication of our donors, our staff, and our partners at Swedish Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. 2009 was a remarkable year because of you. Thank you again for your support and hard work. Together that can we provide the best possible hope for women and their families today and tomorrow.

Warm regards,

Saul Rivkin, MDFounder & Chairman, Board of Directors

Page 4: one-color: supporting research in honor of our wives ... · Saul E. Rivkin, MD, in memory of his wife who succumbed to ovarian cancer, the Marsha Rivkin Center works collaboratively

At the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research, we passionately believe in the power to make a difference in how ovarian cancer is detected, treated, and prevented. As you will learn in this 2009 report, our effort continues to provide a major influence on national and international research studies and to fund key projects to expand our understanding of the disease.

Despite the economic challenges we all faced last year, the Rivkin Center continued to grow and set new records of support from the community. A wonderful example of this was the 2009 Swedish SummeRun, where we welcomed more participants and raised more money than ever before in fifteen-year history of the event. Equally, the generosity demonstrated at 9th Annual Fisher Family & Friends Auction and Golf Invitational highlighted a commitment from our community that is both inspirational for me personally and so greatly appreciated by all of us involved.

As a result, the Rivkin Center has been able to grow its funding for innovative translational research with Pilot Study grants for novel research investigations and Scientific Scholar Awards to up-and-coming researchers to ensure that the best and brightest minds have the support to choose a career focused on ovarian cancer. Additionally, 2009 saw increased enrollment in our Early Detection Ovarian Cancer Screening program for women that have hereditary factors and/or a medical history that place her at high risk to develop the disease.

It is only with the remarkable generosity of our donors, the tireless commitment of many volunteers, advocates, staff, and the dedicated support of our partners at Swedish Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, that the Rivkin Center is able to continue our resolute effort to eradicate this disease.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of us at the Rivkin Center, thank you for an incredible 2009 and your invaluable partnership in the fight against ovarian cancer.

Sincerely,

Alex SmithPresident, Board of Directors

In 2009 the Marsha Rivkin Center Board made a tremendous impact on the ovarian cancer research community by increasing the size of our Pilot Study Awards and Scientific Scholar Awards to an annual amount of $75,000 and $60,000, respectively.

The response from the research community was a doubling in the number of applications received for funding. The quality and scope of the research proposals received increased greatly. From these excellent proposals, we chose awardees with wide-ranging projects from delving into the role of ovulation in ovarian cancer development, to identifying novel targets for cisplatin resistance, to creating better imaging tools for the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

In 2009 we successfully transferred logistical operations of the Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Screening Program from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to Swedish Cancer Institute’s Research Division. This Screening Program is offered free of charge to women at high risk of developing ovarian cancer in order to monitor them for the disease and to provide data and resources to researchers who are developing better tools for early detection. To date we have had over 120 women enrolled in the Swedish-run Screening Program which is funded entirely by the Marsha Rivkin Center. Eventually we are aiming to increase enrollment to 750 women over the next several years.

By supporting these Scientific Programs today, we can look forward to critical break-throughs in our understanding of the cause, detection, and treatment of ovarian cancer in the near future. The Marsha Rivkin Center is poised to bring ovarian cancer research to the next level of success.

Sincerely,

Funding is often difficult to find for discovery work leading up to the most innovative scientific theories. In order to foster these novel ideas, each year, the Marsha Rivkin Center funds promising pilot studies in ovarian cancer. The discoveries from these studies in turn lay the groundwork for major research initiatives. Data gathered from these studies often allow scientists to in turn further pursue research ideas through larger highly competitive national government grants.

The Scientific Scholar Award provides funding to help young investigators develop a career devoted to ovarian cancer research. Recipients are paired with a senior mentor to guide their research and find creative solutions to the difficulties faced in ovarian cancer research. Since talented scientists and doctors often direct their careers to studying diseases where the funding is readily available, the Scientific Scholar Award ensures the best and brightest minds have an opportunity to begin a career in ovarian cancer research.

Ovarian Cancer EarlyDetection Screening Program

Southwest Oncology Group

“This program is so important not only because it gives me the opportunity to provide researchers with information and tools that they need to further their research in early detection, but because it offers me a ‘safety net’ for my own health. I had no second thoughts about participating – the choice was obvious.”

~Rachel Prouser MarensteinOvarian Cancer Early Detection ScreeningProgram Participant

Women who participate in the screening program are also enrolled in an on-going research study that is investigating the success of early detection efforts in improving ovarian cancer survival rates. For this study, health information, clinical data, and blood samples are collected from each participant and stored into an existing database and tissue bank. Currently, this repository contains over 200,000 unique tissue samples, fluid, and blood specimens. These resources can be used for current and future research efforts that increase medical science’s understanding of ovarian cancer and may lead to new techniques that will provide better screening tests for early detection. Women enrolled in the program will be among the first in the nation with access to novel biomarkers when they become available for use in screening for ovarian cancer.

The GCC coordinates education and research initiatives for clinical trials which will examine new therapies used to treat gynecologic malignancies. The focus of the committee will be working with medical oncologists on innovative phase I/II and phase II trials which will shift the discoveries made by the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Ovarian Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) laboratories into the clinical arena. Laboratory-based discoveries can be converted into useful clinical tools only after being carefully studied for safety and efficacy through clinical trials. These critical phase I/II and phase II trials will center on oncogene and suppressor gene-targeted therapies for gynecologic malignancies.

Clinical trials are the backbone of cancer care advancement. The Marsha Rivkin Center is proud to partner with SWOG in this effort

Efforts to advance clinical detection of ovarian cancer in its early stages, when survival rates are much higher, are of crucial importance to the Marsha Rivkin Center. In 2009 the Rivkin Center continued to provide women throughout Washington State who are identified at high risk for developing ovarian cancer with advanced, evidence-based screening procedures that can indicate the presence of early stage ovarian cancer. The screening program identifies high-risk women, based on their genetic or medical histories, and provides them with the best available screening procedures, at no cost to them, on a regular, on-going basis in order to maximize the likelihood that, if they do develop ovarian cancer, it will be discovered at an early stage when their chances for survival may be as high as 90%.

In 2008 the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research awarded a $250,000 grant over five years to the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) for the purpose of reactivating its Gynecologic Cancer Committee (GCC). This grant to the philanthropic arm of SWOG, the Hope Foundation, will revitalize the focus of SWOG on gynecologic malignancies and aligns with the Marsha Rivkin Center’s mission to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer EarlyDetection Screening Program

On August 27th and 30th, many long-time supporters and new friends participated in one of the Marsha Rivkin Center’s most important and dynamic fundraising events, the Fisher Family and Friends Auction & Golf Invitational.

Celebrating at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue on Thursday, the one-and-only John Curley was the auctioneer for the evening and Mark Wright from Q13 and Fox News was the Celebrity Emcee. Guests enjoyed an elegant dinner and feverish bidding on silent and live auction items such as tickets to a 2010 American Idol taping, a trip to New York Fashion Week, and a Michael Jackson autographed guitar.

On Sunday, golfers continued the fun by gathering at the Redmond Ridge Golf Club for an early morning shotgun tournament. The two events raised $380,000 to help take the Marsha Rivkin Center one step closer to winning the fight against ovarian cancer.

Fundraising Events

16

Additionally, the event paid special tribute to Linda Adler and Diane Brondello, two remarkable women who have shown grace, strength, and profound generosity in the face of ovarian cancer with the 2009 Courage for Life Award.

Linda was diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer in June 2006, after being treated for symptoms that she had had for 5 years that she now knows were early signs of her undiagnosed cancer.

After a consult with Dr. Saul Rivkin, Linda told him that if she survived, she was going to start an ovarian cancer awareness project. “Without a routine screening tool,” she says, “awareness is the key to early diagnosis.” She did her first educational presentation in October 2007 and has continued getting the word out wherever and whenever she is invited.

Diane was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer in March of 2006, after experiencing stomach discomfort, bloating, and weight gain. An intuitive nurse suggested she get an ultrasound. “My life has been different ever since,” she says.

Following her diagnosis, Diane was showered with support from the people who know and love her. Her triplet sisters have been by her side for every doctor appointment and milestone along the way and in 2008, with the support of her many friends and family, Diane raised $25,000 with 54 team members at the Swedish SummeRun.

“When life gets you down, you really find out who your friends are and I have found that I have friends and family who love me very much. That inspires me to keep fighting and to stick around.”

“Being an ovarian cancer survivor is one of my greatest accomplishments in life. But I am one of the lucky ones. We urgently need more research and funding for our scientific community to help them find even the simplest of things – a reliable diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer. My greatest wish in life is to see the day when women will not have to depend on luck to survive this devastating disease. The Marsha Rivkin Center not only shares in that dream, but is a driving force in turning dreams into reality through research.”

If diagnosed and treated before the cancer spreads, more than 90 percent of women survive. However, less than 20 percent of all ovarian cancers are detected at this early stage. We encourage women to know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer to help catch the disease at its earliest stage.

Signs and Symptoms

• Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)

Take Action

These symptoms may be caused by ovarian cancer or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to check with a doctor, preferably a gynecologist, about these symptoms if they are new and persist for 2–3 weeks, especially if you experience several at one time. Tests for ovarian cancer include a combination pelvic/rectal exam, CA 125 blood test, and a transvaginal ultrasound. A Pap smear is NOT a test for ovarian cancer. If ovarian cancer is suspected, consult a gynecologic oncologist.
