Made that same summer. Taylor Made had a tent set up next to the practice range and as a collegiate golfer he was in heaven watching these greats of the game practice all week long. The day after my encounter Nick, he was practicing again and my son was neglecting his duties and hitting balls himself when Nick shouted out to him that closest to the pin would owe the other a “buck”. My 20 year old son was frozen with fear at the challenge by arguably the best golfer in the 2008 PCC field and somehow through his anxiety stuck a wedge 18 inches from the pin. Nick Price with his fluid effortless swing cigarette ala John Daly lodged in between his lips effortlessly pin point pitched the ball 5 inches inside Michaels “shot of his life”. Nick winked at my son and fired a friendly “Keep the buck mate”! I share this story as a testament to Nick’s kindness and genuine civility. Many athletes will display in front of the cameras or fellow elitist that they embrace the public, but when the cameras off they have a level of arrogance that appalls me. Nick Price proved to a couple of small time schmoes like my son and I that he’s just one helluva a good guy and now a peoples champion in Iowa. The price for admission to a great week-end was well worth the golf exhibited and the Price was right as Nick hoisted the 2010 trophy! I thank you for opening up our new “On the Tee” digital magazine and invite you to listen to Iowa’s number 1 golf show “On the Tee” every Wednesday night on the Iowa Sports Connection Radio Network, and the television broadcast on WHO-TV 13.2 and Mediacom 246, or log onto “iowasportscoonnection.com” for a streaming version. The front cover shot of our 3rd issue of the “On the Tee” digital magazine is my favorite to date. Nick Price is hoisting the 2010 Principal Charity Classic trophy and it couldn’t be in the hands of a nicer guy and ambassador for the game of golf. The old adage 3 time’s a charm certainly is accurate in Nick’s case at Glen Oaks Country Club. Nick was in the lead and lost it on Sunday, his first trip to West Des Moines, as last year he lost in a playoff to Fred Funk and eventual winner Mark McNulty. This year, with all the pre-tournament hype focused on Freddie Couples and the new faces; Bernhard Langer , Tommy Armour III, and Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, Nick quietly crept to the top of the leader board Saturday and on Sunday played brilliantly to fend of Tommy Armour III for his first Principal Charity Classic win. The 2010 Principal Charity Classic was the most successful on record with just under 74,000 fans descending on the grounds of Glen Oaks Country Club. Golf fans young and old made the pilgrimage to the state’s capital to watch the deepest field in professional golf since the 1999 Senior US Open. The absolute hole in one for fans and certainly for me was Nick Price completing the weekend as the champion. I was one of the fortunate Iowans this year to visit with Nick before he golfed and what a gentleman and sincere human being. I approached Nick on the practice range prior to the Wednesday pro-am as he was on the front cover of our statewide magazine, The Iowa Sports Connection. I typically do not interrupt these pros while they are at work for an autograph but was assured by Jeff Starr that it would not be an issue. Nick stopped his warm-up grabbed the magazine and signed it while he pulled on a cigarette and told jokes to his caddy. I was walking away wanting to minimize the inconvenience when he asked me about the magazine and what I did for a living. The next 10 minutes were light and casual and I walked away very impressed with this hall of fame golfer who is very grounded and his family comes before all business and golf considerations. However, this was just the start of the Rickord family interaction with Nick Price. My oldest son Michael was working part-time for Taylor

In winning the Celtic Manor Wales Open on Sunday by three shots, Graeme McDowell did plenty to increase his odds of getting back to the same Celtic Manor Resort course for the 2010 Ryder Cup. The Irishman’s fantastic weekend rounds of 64 and 63 gave him his fifth career European Tour victory. Over the final 36 holes McDowell made 16 birdies and just one bogey. He used the Callaway FT-3 Driver, a Tour 15-degree X Fairway Wood, X-Forged Irons, the Callaway Tour ix Golf Ball and the Odyssey White Hot #7 Putter. Using his Callaway irons and wedges, McDowell led the field in greens in regulation, hitting 83.3 percent. “I think it’s the best final round I’ve ever played to win a tournament,” McDowell said. “The first 11 holes was dream golf and I am

He finished second in the field in putts per GIR, averaging 1.602, and also tied for ninth in putts per round, averaging 27.5. He

put the Backstryke Blade in play in the last three events and since then he has not shot above 71 and his scoring average is 67.5. On Sunday, he won with a walk-off birdie. He also wore TWO Callaway Ion gloves—that’s one on each hand. Really.(Continued on Page 15)

Jerry Smith Qualifies for 2010 U.S. Open

Jerry Smith, a native of Oskaloosa and former PGA Tour player, has advanced to the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, CA. Smith captured the second and final qualifying spot at the Sectional Qualifier held at Bull Valley Country Club outside of Chicago. After an even par 72 in his morning round, Smith posted a 5-under 67 in the afternoon to secure his spot at Pebble. Nate McCoy participated at the St. Louis area qualifier where there was only one spot available. McCoy finished in at tie for 6th after posting a even par total of 69-71--140. The St. Louis qualifier was held on the Lewis and Clark course at the Country Club of St. Albans, site of the 2009 USGA State Team Championship in which his father, Mike, competed for the Iowa squad. In the Columbus, Ohio qualifier Jack Newman and Josh Manske failed to claim one of the 15 spots that were available to the field of 120. On the heels of The Memorial Tournament the qualifier has a

field that looks much like a regular tour stop. Newman fired rounds of 71-78--149 and Manske was 79-79--158. The qualifier that had the most golfers with Iowa ties competing was in Springfield, Ohio, where a total of 59 players went after 3 spots. Christopher Black of Independence and Sean McCarty came closest to claiming one of the three spots, each shooting even par 140 and leaving them in a tie for 10th. Black posted rounds of 71-69 while McCarty started strong with 67 and followed it with a 73 in the afternoon round. Former Iowa State golfer Chris Baker finished T27 after a 73-69--142 and PGA Professional at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake Darin Fisher went round in 76-74--150.

Oimoen Wins Ottumwa Amateur by One Shot

2008 Iowa Amateur Champion Mike Oimoen of Clear Lake won the 2010 Ottumwa Amateur on the strength of a final round, bogey-free 67. Steve Wetrich of Ottumwa finished second while Jon

Olson and Dusty Stewart tied for 3rd. Wetrich had a four shot lead playing the 14th hole of the final round, but misplayed his bunker shot and three putts led to a double bogey. Meanwhile Oimoen holed a long birdie putt. Although Wetrich still had a one shot lead, Oimoen rode the momentum gained on the 14th to his one shot win.Curell Falls to Fell in Match Play

Final Brian Fell of St Ansgar defeated Jim Curell of Boone 2 up in the final of the 2010 Senior Match Play on Sunday. Fell, who entered the match play bracket as the 6 seed, won four of his five matches by the 2 up total. He defeated Randy Studer 2 up in round 1, Greg Lee 2 up in round 2 and Dr. David Studer 2 up in the semifinals. His other match was a 1 up victory over good friend Ron Post in the quarterfinals. Curell moved through his matches with a bit more variety. He defeated Dave Carlson 3&2, Dr. Bob Gitchell 5&4, Joel Yunek 1 up and Tim Taylor 4&3.

Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament RecapsJocilyn Onnen Leads Grundy Center to Class 1A Team Championship with Medalist Honors

Adel, Iowa – Day one found Jocilyn Onnen of Grundy Center off to a great start individually with a first round score of 74 which has her three strokes up on defending state medalist in Class 1A, Victoria Grasso of Ankeny Christian Academy. Onnen was the runner-up medalist last season and finished second to Grasso in the regional. Grundy Center also enjoys an 11-stroke lead in the team race over Bishop Garrigan (Algona).

Onnen ended up erasing the memory of the sudden death loss last year for medalist honors with a day-two Class 1A best 80 to win medalist honors by six strokes over 2009 champ Victoria Grasso. The team

battle was not as easy as Bishop Garrigan nearly erased a nine stroke deficit and ended up one stroke back of Grundy Cen-ter. Along with Onnen on the state champion Grundy Center team were Ashley Appel, Jenn Simms, Morgan Wical, Jamie Saak and Bailey Wrage.

Katie Gustafson is 2A Medalist; Kuemper Catholic Crusies to 2A Team Championship

Adel, Iowa – After day one the team race is not so much a team race as Clarinda led by Jenifer Geer and her 1st round 82, good for second individually leads Kuemper Catholic (Car-roll) by 23 strokes. Kelsey Faiferlick of St. Edmond (Fort Dodge) sits on top of the individual leader board with Geer, Katie Gustafson of South Hamilton (Jewell) and Ellie Ament of Beck-

After losing his 36-hole lead in each of the past two Principal Charity Classic’s, Nick Price vowed to himself that this time would be different, and it was. Price, who again was the 36-hole leader with Tommy Armour III, pulled away with a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to claim the winner’s spot by four strokes over Armour, who had an even-par 71 for his final round. Price’s 54-hole total was 14 under 199. John Cook and Loren Roberts tied for third place at 9 under par. “I did all the right things today,” said Price. “The chip-in on hole 6 was significant and I made a lot of 6-footers today. My driving really set me up and I really played solid. I didn’t doubt myself today. I feel that if I play well now, there’s no excuse for me not to win. I am thrilled.”

Susan Thompson Iowa Section PGASponsors, Pro-Am Teams and Players Recruited for Iowa Open Organizers for the Brokers International Ltd. Iowa Open continue to work on plans to make the return to Panora of this annual golf tournament a memorable one. The tournament will be held Aug. 19-22 at Lake Panorama National. It previ-ously was held at the LPN from 1985 to 1998. A contract between the Iowa Section PGA and Brokers International Ltd. brings the tournament to the LPN for five years. The Panora insurance marketing company committed $25,000 annually to the event, making it the major sponsor. Five additional corporate sponsors each have committed $5,000 to help cover tournament ex-penses. These are Allianz, American Equity, Aviva, Menadue Development, which owns The Port and Lakeside Inn, and People’s Trust and Savings Bank. The 144-player field is open to professionals and amateurs who live in Iowa, as well as golfers with Iowa ties. The deadline for entering the tourna-ment is Aug. 10, but organizers think the field will fill before that deadline. One reason for that is an increase in prize money. Another is the addition of a senior division for players 50 years of age and older on or before Aug. 20, 2010. Seniors will be competing for $5,000 added sponsorship along with senior divi-sion entry fees. While the three-day tournament for profession-

als and amateurs is the main event, a pro-am tournament planned for Thursday, Aug. 19, also is generating interest.

Only a few slots remain for teams in the pro-am. A “draw party” for pro-am participants will be held at Lake Panorama’s Boulder Beach Wednesday evening, as names of pros are drawn to match with the amateur teams. Mike Rickord and Jay Hornton of “On the Tee” were joined by author and sports writer John Feinstein on May 19th. The three talked about Feinstein’s new book, Moment of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf, Tiger Woods, and the future of the PGA Tour. Mike Rickord: Good evening, John.John Feinstein: Hey, Mike, Jay how are you guys?MR: We’re well. You know I tried to do a little homework as a “hack” and the thing that impressed me the most about looking at your bio is that we’re the same age. We’re a couple of months apart.JF: Well that doesn’t say much for my bio, does it Mike? If that’s the most impressive thing you could find. MR: Well from a personal perspective on my end. But you got a new book, just the 13th it came out right?JF: It came out May 13th that’s right, less than a week ago. Obviously timing it, working it up to the U.S. Open and Father’s Day, since it is really based on what happened in the four Major Championships in 2003 when a bunch of guys who had never won a Major Championship before won. Mike Weir, Jim Furyk—great player but had never won a major—and then Ben Curtis and Sean Micheel came completely out of nowhere to win the British Open and the PGA Championship and I wanted to take a look at what happened to guys when sudden fame is thrust upon them, which it really was at least three of the four cases. Because Mike Weir became as big a name as there was in Canada being the first Canadian to ever win a Major Championship and I found the guys’ stories to be fascinating. MR: You know when I was contacted about this book coming out, I thought “You know, there’s some analogies probably from this season 2010 to that year in 2003 with the exception of ‘Lefty’ winning the first Major but the opportunity, with Tiger’s game obviously

On the Tee Conversations: John Feinsteinnot where it’s been in the past, the opportunity to see something comparable happen the next three Majors certainly exists. JF: Well, we never know ‘cause that’s the beauty of golf. But the analogy is if you go back to 2002 where this book began. Tiger Woods is in the process of firing his swing coach, Butch Harmon. And the book begins with Tiger walking on to the tee at the British Open that year at Muirfield and saying to Butch, “I don’t need you. I’m fine. I’m done.” And after all those years of working together, the difference of course being at that point, Tiger had won seven of the 11 previous majors that he played in. So when he made the swing change, made the coaching change, went to Hank Haney and then did not play especially well the next two years, 2003 and 2004, that did open the door absolutely for the guys who won in 2003 that we’ve already mentioned.MR: Early in the year, a lot of people in our demographic were watching, which is great for the Golf Channel, were watching the Champions Tour more so than the PGA Tour prior to The Masters. Talk about the face of the PGA Tour when Tiger and “Lefty” aren’t playing well. How do you see the future with the Ricky Fowlers and the Anthony Kims?JF: Well I think the future on the PGA Tour is terrific. You’ve gotta throw in Roy McIlroy, Ishakawa—when he chooses to come and play over here, which I hope he will because he’s obviously a great young talent, too. And Adam Scott winning again, he’s only 29. It seems like he’s been around forever, but he’s only 29. And again, going back to my motivation for writing a book like Moment of Glory, I don’t believe you have to be Tiger Woods or Phil Michelson to have a great story to tell. Again, when I came up with this idea, a lot of it goes all the way back from working with Mike Donald on A

Good Walk Spoiled. He came that close to winning a U.S. Open and talked to me about how different his life might have been had he won the Open at Medinah Dime in 1990. And that’s really where the idea came, when Mike Weir and Len Mattiace were playing off at The Masters. You know, as I was watching that playoff it occurred to me how different their lives were going to be in the next 15 minutes. Because one was going to be a Masters champion and the other was going to be left to wonder if he’d ever get that close again. And I think that’s great theater. I think that makes golf exciting.MR: We’re obviously golf geeks here in the studio because we have a radio show year round talking the game of golf. But what about the periphery sports fans, who are listening on ESPN right now, who only tune in when Tiger Woods and Lefty are on the top of that leaderboard? What’s the game of golf have to do to capture them? JF: You know what I don’t think that’s ever going to change. You’re going to always have two different kinds of golf fans. (You’ll have) the kind like us who are going to watch the Nationwide Tour because we want to see the guys who are up-and-coming or the guys who slid back. You know, Steve Pate winning this year on the Nationwide Tour, to me that’s a terrific story. So guys like us are going to watch golf because we love the game, because we are looking for that next great story, whoever it might be. That’s what motivated me to write this book. MR: The book is Moment of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf by John Feinstein. We could talk two hours with you John. We certainly appreciate you taking time to join us “On the Tee.”JF: Thanks for having me. Take care.

The history of Madhouse Brewing Company is undeniably tied to that of another (formerly) Newton, IA based beverage artisan–Jasper Winery. In 2008, Jasper Winery moved from its building in Newton to that of newly constructed winery building near downtown Des Moines. At the time, the winemaker at Jasper Winery, Mason Groben, decided to convert the old winery into a brewery. Coincidentally, Allen Wells, CEO of Iowa Telecom, was looking into the option of moving a brewery into a space left vacant in the historic buildings previously owned by the Maytag Corp. Groben and Wells met and decided to join forces to bring Newton its first brewery. Plans for the brewery began but were unexpectedly halted due to a failure to get a permit from the State of Iowa. After much legal debate, it was determined that state law forbade an employee of a winery (Groben) from also working for another manufacturer of alcoholic beverages (the brewery) as explained in Iowa Code Section 123.45. This outdated and poorly constructed section in

Madhouse Brewing CompanyThe Official Beer of the 2010 Hack Nation Invitational

the Iowa law nearly ended the brewery plans. In January, 2009, Groben began an intensive campaign at the Iowa Capital to get the law changed. Groben was fortunate to receive the support of Senator Dennis Black, Newton Mayor Chaz Allen, and the many others who supported the bill. After several months of talking with legislators, Senate File (SF) 420 was passed and signed into law! Following this change to the Iowa law, plans for the brewery were able to

proceed. Approximately twenty investors committed to the project, and the purchasing of equipment came soon after. Madhouse Brewing Company began production in January, 2010.

Pastime Pale Ale Pastime Pale Ale is a “hopped up” version of an American style pale ale. The beer is deep amber to copper in color, and receives several generous additions of Centennial

and Cascade hops. These hops give the beer a complex and enticing character, with spicy aromas of citrus and pine. Specialty grains deliver a rich and full-bodied flavor, with a bold taste of caramel and toasted malt. Our brewery is located in the former headquarters of the Maytag Corp., and the “Pastime” was the first washing machine made by the Maytag company in 1907. Food Pairings – Grilled meats, fried seafood, spicy or Cajun dishes

American Wheat Our American Wheat is an original example of this relatively new beer style. Light and refreshing, American-style wheat beers have gained

popularity for their lively effervescence and easy drinking flavor. Wheat malt dominates the sensory attributes of this beer, with light hop additions to bring out a pleasant citrus aroma. This beer is intentionally left unfiltered and therefore cloudy, in order to preserve the complex flavor components of the beer. Food Pairings – summer salads, grilled fish, sushi, pizza

Jessie finished with a two-day total of 157, three strokes better than Susan Kirschenman of Ballard (Huxley) who also fired a round best 77 on Wednesday for a 160 two-day total.
