This classic “Wall of Fame” cover for the final 2011 edition of our “On The Tee” digital magazine could be filled top to bottom with pictures considering the many story lines this year. It was a year to remember in Iowa, across America and worldwide in the great game of golf! The Fed Ex Cup Series wound down yesterday September 25th in appropriate fashion with the seasons Tour Championship coming down to overtime once again in the year of the playoff. This finale for the Fed Ex Cup was a 3 hole playoff between Hunter Mahan and the unsung Bill Haas, son of Champions Tour standout Jay Haas. Young Bill made him a proud papa as he walked away with an 11 million dollar payday and shocked the entire field that started the playoff stretch a month ago entering Atlanta ranked 25th but prevailing in the end and securing a spot on the Presidents Cup. What a year of no names and research for those of us in the golf media business as we were introduced to the future of golf and parity. South African Charl Scwartzel wins the Masters, Rory McIlroy takes the US Open trophy home to Northern Ireland as does countryman Darren Clarke with the Claret Jug, and Keegan Bradley brings us some red white and blue pride by keeping the PGA Championship in America! Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Ernie Els were certainly less than their hall of fame careers in 2011 and it opened the door for the young guns of golf that all built their careers aspiring to reach the PGA and some semblance of the success that the big 3 have achieved in their careers. Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Keegan Bradley, Scott Stalllings, Harrison Frazar, Johnnie Vagas, and Gary Woodland were certainly not household names prior to 2011 but each garnered victory this past year. The other theme that was consistent and probably plenty of 80’s music in these gentleman’s cars and I-Pods was the success of the players over 40 years old that were victorious starting with our cover boy Steve Stricker winner of the Memorial and John Deere Classic. Steve was joined in the 40 something winner circle by Darren Clarke, David Toms, Lefty, and “The Tank” KJ Choi. This is an interesting phenomenon when discussing Tiger Woods future and ability to retain the dominance that he has held over the PGA for over a decade. If healthy in mind, spirit, and physically combined with a will to win many pontiffs of the fairways from the Golf Channel believe that Tiger will return with a vengeance while many detractors are convinced that we will never see arguably the game’s greatest ever return to the winners circle let alone win majors. That is why the 2011 fall series and Presidents Cup will be very interesting to get a snapshot of the

Tiger we will see in 2012. Speaking of snapshots the pictures of Steve Stricker on our “On the Tee” digital magazines are my favorites as he is an incredible human being, genuine good guy enjoying a superb resurgence in his career in his 40’s and showing no signs of going backwards in 2012 and a 4 Peat at the John Deere Classic! Iowa’s favorite son Zach Johnson did not hoist a trophy in 2011 but continued his steady play and remains one of America’s consistent players and always a contender for a top 10 finish. I anticipate an early season victory for Zach in 2012 and another 4 Million dollar year. In closing, I thank our loyal audience from the IPGA professionals to the “Hack Nation” and the tens of thousands of golfers that fit in between those two classes of talent. Every year we have aspired to improve “On the Tee” and in 2011 we expanded and improved our television production and raised the bar on our golf tournament, e-mail newsletter, and added affiliates to our radio network. I am blessed to have Judd Gibb, Jay Horton, and Tim Darrah all 3 great friends, great golfers (TD ? but light years better than me) as they bring their knowledge to the airwaves 50 weeks a year for all of us golf junkies. The Golf Channel, KCRG TV, WHO TV, Cedar Rapids Gazzette, Des Moines Register, and Quad City Times have all joined us to insure we bring you the states most in-depth golf coverage year round with plenty of entertainment melded into the production. In 2012 we will get more video into the TV side, upgrade the graphics and increase the quality of our interviews and launch some outrageous contests. Have a great winter keep listening and watching all season long on the TV and radio side and we’ll launch year number 3 of “On the Tee” digital magazine in March of 2012. Kansas State golfer Ben Juffer of West Des Moines claimed the lone qualifying spot at the U.S. Amateur qualifier held at Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita, KS on Monday, August 8th. Juffer shot rounds of 72-67-139 and advances to Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin. J.D. Anderson of West Des Moines also competed in the Wichita qualifier. Anderson shot rounds of 69-76 to finish in a tie for fourth, six strokes behind Juffer. Ben makes six total Iowans who are qualified for the national championship. He joins Mike McCoy,

has won a tournament four straight years. The way Stricker has mastered the TPC Deere Run course, you can’t discount his chances of joining that group, too. Stricker finished 26 under at last year’s tour-nament and was 20 under in his 2009 victory. So, was he ready talk about four in a row? “No,” Stricker said with a smile. Stanley, 23, claimed a nice consolation prize, earning the spot in the British Open that goes to the highest finisher in this tournament who’s not already qualified. But if it hadn’t been for Stricker’s late heroics, Stanley would have had his first vic-tory on the TOUR. “I’m very excited to go over there,” said Stanley, whose best finish had been a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March. “But I’m still trying to calm down from that round.” Stanley trailed by five strokes after Stricker buried a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 9. But showing the poise of a TOUR veteran, he birdied five of the first six holes on the back nine to zoom into the lead, making a 26-foot birdie putt on 13, an 18-footer on 14 and a 36-footer on 15 to go up by a stroke. When Stricker made his two bogeys, Stanley suddenly led by two. “I just kept giving myself good looks and putts that I did in practice rounds and putts that I knew what they were going to do,” he said. “I just kept trying to make birdies and give myself opportuni-ties.” Stanley made a nice par save on 17 after driv-ing into a grove of trees, then got into trouble on 18 when he went from the rough to a greenside bunker. He was in good position to salvage par again when he chipped up to 9 feet, but he missed the putt and took bogey, giving Stricker the op-portunity he needed. Stricker won for the second time this year and 11th time in his career, with eight of those victories coming after he turned 40. He won the Memorial Tournament a month ago and now has multiple wins in three consecutive years. Only four others have done that since 2000: Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els.

Matt McQuillan, who had missed the cut in his previous 10 tournaments, shot a 64 to tie Zach Johnson (65) for third at 17 under. Charles Howell III (64) and Chez Reavie (72) were another stroke back. Stanley kept the lead by salvaging par on 17 after sending his tee shot into a grove of trees, but he missed a 9-foot par putt on 18 to open the door for Stricker, who took advantage. Stricker had fallen two back with bogeys on 15 and 16 that seemingly ended his hopes of a threepeat. “I really did feel like the momentum was gone for a while,” he said. “Those holes kind of derailed me there.” But he regrouped quickly. Stricker knocked in a 15-foot putt for birdie on 17 to cut Stanley’s lead to one stroke, then made what turned out to be a tournament-saving shot from a bunker on the left side of the fairway. Standing with his left foot in the bunker and his right foot on the lip, Stricker hit the ball solidly and left it on the fringe of the green behind the pin, drawing a huge roar from the crowd. The next roar was even louder. Using his putter, Stricker sent the ball toward the cup and watched it curl in from the left side. The 44-year-

old from Madison, Wis., a crowd favorite at this tournament, backed away as the ball neared the hole, then raised his arms and pumped his fist to celebrate the moment. “It’s weird,” Stricker said. “When I get into a situation where I have to make a putt, I feel like my nerves kind of go away and I focus extremely hard on trying to make that putt. And that’s kind of like the little zone I got into on 17 and 18, I guess.” With the victory, Stricker joined a small but noteworthy group of golfers who have won a tournament three year running. The list reads like a Who’s Who’s of the game and includes Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Hogan and Johnny Miller. Woods has done it six times and Palmer twice. “I kept telling myself that it’s not a big deal and it really wasn’t -- until today,” Stricker said. “That back nine trying to win, it’s just really hard. I don’t know any other way to say it. It’s extremely hard to put it away. “When you watch guys like Tiger put away all those tournaments, anybody who’s put it away down the stretch, it’s a difficult thing to do. But I’m happy to come out on top. I made a couple of putts when I had to.” Woods also is one of just four golfers who

Steve Stricker sank a 25-foot putt from off the 18th green Sun-day to win the John Deere Classic for the third straight year and put himself in one of golf’s most select groups. “It was an unbelievable week and an unbelievable finish,” Stricker said. “I still can’t believe I’m sitting here.” Stricker became just the 10th golfer since World War II to win a tournament three straight times. He finished at 22-under 262 to beat Stanley by one stroke and move to second in the FedExCup standings.

Bishop Garrigan (Algona) Cruises While Victoria Grass of Ankeny Christian Takes Second Individual Crown in Class 1A

Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Bishop Garrigan (Algona) proved their team strength as they cruised to the Class 1A team title by 62-strokes. Bishop Garrigan had four top-ten individual finishers led by Sheridan Berte who posted a second round best score of 70 to finish runner-up to two-time medalist winner Victoria Grasso of Ankeny Christian Academy. Grasso won the title in 2009 as a freshman as well. Also on the state championship team were Alexa Capesius who finished, Kelsie Berke who was seventh and Haley Froehlich who was ninth overall. Also on the team were Rebecca Richter and Miranda Gisch.

Pleasantville Uses Balance to Grab Class 2A Team Title; Chantel Eicher of East Marshall Wins Tight Battle for Individual Title

Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Pleasantville led by three strokes after the first round and posted the best team score in day two to win the Class 2A team championship by eight strokes over Wapello. Pleasantville used a balanced effort with no player in the top-ten individually. Konner Gordon led the way with her 16h place individual finish along with Kaitlyn Friday who was 19th. Also on the state winning team were Morgan Marsh, Charlee Vanderpool, Ashley Jahner and Taylor Wadle. Medalist honors in Class 2A went to Chantel Eicher of East Marshall (LeGrand) who shot round of 83 and 77 for a two-day total of 160 and edged runner-up Ellie Ament of Beckman (Dyersville) by one stroke. Kuemper Catholic Defends Their 2A Team Title, Adam Squires Grabs Individual TitleAdam Squires of Columbus Catholic (Waterloo) posted top scores in both the first and second rounds to claim the Class 2A medalist honors. Squires was five strokes better than runner-up Nate Schill from Prairie Valley (Gowrie) who also shot a 75 in the final round. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) defended their 2010 title with a 2-stroke victory over Columbus Catholic who held a 2-stroke lead heading into championship Saturday. The Knights were led by Nathan Molak who tied for third individually. Also making up the title team were Tanner Ludwig who was tied for fifth, Kyler Ludwigm Jacob Buelt, Brian Schreck and Matt Gute. Leading the way for Newman Catholic was Dalton Olson with a fourth place finish in the individual race. Also on the 1A title team was Mitch Jacobi, Cody Roberts, Tyler Fischer, Derrick Urdahl and Tanner Gribben. The medalist honors went to Tyler Gunderson of Lisbon who led after the opening round 72 and finished with a 77 for a 2-stroke victory over Joe Weber of NUH-Cedar Falls. Erik Sikkema of Prince of Peace (Clinton) finished third after a Class 1A best second round 72. Clear Lake Had Massive Turnaround In Final Round to Claim Class 3A Team Golf TitleClear Lake had huge final round to claim the Class 3A Iowa high school boys team golf title. The Lions trailed by 10-strokes entering championship Saturday and fired a tournament low 308 to beat first round leader Washington by five strokes. Brent Tarr led the way for Clear Lake with a final round 72 which placed him in a tie for individual lead with Mitch Tucker of Oskaloosa and Lucas Boyd of Pella. Tarr won the Class 3A medalist honors in a playoff. Along with Tarr, making up the championship team are Luke Monson who was tied for fourth individually, Ryan Iverson, Chase Duesenberg, David Thompson, Jared Bottjen and Shawn Snelling. When nature’s beauty combines so perfectly with human imagination the outcome is indescribable by mere words. On the other hand, a well crafted and timed picture makes memorializing the otherwise indefinable possible. Such is the case at Iowa’s number one golf course, The Harvester Golf Club, in Rhodes, IA. The 7,340 yard Keith Foster design opened to rave reviews on July 1st, 2000 and has been setting the bar for Iowa golf ever since. “Compared to some of the most famous courses in the world, we recognize that The Harvester is young,” stated Harvester’s owner Dickson Jensen. “But the course design, the surroundings, and the commitment to tradition all lends to a maturity and a degree of excellence beyond our years.” After a recent trip to The Harvester Golf Club, which is just minutes northeast of Des Moines, I found myself at a loss for words, (a rarity for sure) but not on how to tell Harvester’s bold story. Therefore I have enlisted the help of golf photographer Joel Randall and Harvester’s Head Golf Professional John Haberman. Between these two highly skilled golf aficionados, it is my hope you’ll understand what makes The Harvester Golf Club so distinctive and a course that must be added to anyone’s Bucket List. Below you will be treated to four panoramic images of the finest collection of par-3’s I’ve experienced in a long time followed by a description by their 4th year head pro on what makes them so memorable.

#3, 165 yards - “Humble Crossing” The golfer is presented with a slightly downhill tee shot over one of Harvester’s beautiful water features. A new sod-wall bunker on the left will collect any “long left” shot that bails away from the water in front of and

right of the green. Accuracy is a must on this tee shot due to the ridge that runs directly through the middle of the green.

#8, 185 yards - “Serendipity” With Lake Harvester as the backdrop, this shot requires a precisely placed iron depending on the location of the pin. The hole features a front-left bunker and a green that slopes from left to right, making it difficult to get to a front left pin. That slope can also create some excitement for a back-right pin as balls will funnel towards to the hole. A true delight for those who like to shape their shots!

#14, 180 yards - “The Ridge” The Harvester offers variety on this par-3 due to two separate teeing areas. This downhill par-3 requires distance control from both tees due to a split-level green. This severely sloped green will get your attention as you approach the putting surface and demands every ounce of touch. Par here is a great score.

#17, 165 yards - “The Thresher” The par-3 17th at The Harvester might be the most daunting of our three finishing holes. A new limestone walls lines the green from Lake Harvester. A collection area and greenside bunker on the left collect those

who “bail out” from the water. A three level green requires perfect distance control depending on the hole location that day. Our back-right “Sunday Pin” might be the hardest shot on our course. To get it close, you would have to hit you 170 yard tee shot within a 15 foot circle. In conclusion, there is something magical about traveling seven hours from home to play a property so highly thought of by the golf media that has been rated Iowa’s best golf course basically since the minute it opened. And after enjoying four hours of solitude and splendor, I can say only one thing - every golf writer that played Harvester GC in Rhodes, IA before me was dead solid perfect. Hole Number One | Par 5King: 553 Palmer: 527 Deacon: 511Your round starts off with an elevated tee shot to a large landing area. Position is the key in order to be able to try to get home in two. By keeping your tee shot on the left side of the fairway it will allow you a clear shot to this long green which is guarded by a large bunker in the front left of the green. If you choose to lay up, you must choose the correct club to avoid the fairway bunker while splitting the two large trees that collect any errant shots. If played correctly you should have a good chance at birdie.

Hole Number Two | Par 4King: 420 Palmer: 386 Deacon: 365The tee shot is crucial in finding the fairway on this relative short par four. A good tee shot will position you with a short iron to an elevated green that is guarded by a bunker short right. Try keeping your second shot below the hole to all yourself a good chance for your putt on this green that runs from back to front.

Hole Number Three | Par 3King: 186 Palmer: 170 Deacon: 156The first of the five par threes that are considered the best collection of par threes in the state of Iowa.

It is definitely not for faint of heart. This mid length par three can be very intimidating with any shot missing short and left finishing down in the collection area below the green resulting in a difficult chance in getting it up and down. A well executed shot to the right side of the green will play off the side hill ending in the middle of the green. Par is a great score on this hole.

Hole Number Four | Par 5King: 593 Palmer: 578 Deacon: 548A good drive from this elevated tee shot avoiding the large fairway bunker will leave you in perfect position. The longer hitters will then have to make the decision to either go for the green that is guarded left with a bunker or lay up. Choose your lay up club wisely in order to avoid the two fairway bunkers that cross the entire fairway that will collect any errant shots and have you struggling to make par.

Hole Number Five | Par 3King: 185 Palmer: 164 Deacon: 157Considered to be the signature par three at the Tournament Club of Iowa, this hole is the most photographed hole on the course. Club selection is most crucial while playing this beautiful downhill par three due to the swirling winds that can have you second guessing on what club to select. This hole is guarded by the winding big creek that runs from the front around the massive 44 yard wide green. A well judged iron shot will leave you a great chance at par on this memorable hole.

Hole Number Six | Par 4/5King: 480 Palmer: 448 Deacon: 423One of the most demanding holes at the Tournament Club of Iowa, this hole features the Big Creek Bluff

running down the entire right side of the hole. A large walnut tree on the left guards the green on your second shot, so your tee shot must be played to the right half of the fairway. Your long approach shot must be very accurate in order to avoid the creek cutting across the fairway and along the left side of the green. Making a par on this hole feels like a birdie.

Hole Number Seven | Par 4King: 386 Palmer: 359 Deacon: 350This short dogleg par four allows you several options from the tee. You can play a shorter shot to the right landing area which will leave you with a middle iron to the green. If you feel like being a little aggressive you can choose to hit a driver and carry the creek that runs the entire left side of the hole. A well struck driver can leave you with a little wedge for a good chance for birdie. Beware, a less then desired tee shot can get you in a lot of trouble and cause you to be looking at a big number.

Hole Number Eight | Par 3King: 234 Palmer: 170 Deacon: 155This hole features a narrow green that extends 45 yards in depth. It is guarded by a large bunker on the right as well as large oak trees that guard the left side that catches any shot hit left of your target. Be sure of your yardage on this tee shot to help miss clubbing yourself and leaving you with an extremely long putt.

Hole Number Nine | Par 4King: 456 Palmer: 359 Deacon: 378A great finishing hole for the front nine. It demands a good drive to set yourself up for a middle to short iron for your second shot. Make sure you don’t miss right or you will find the large seven acre lake on the right

that runs the entire length of the hole while protecting the right side of the green. Additionally, there is a bunker short left that collects any shot that is played to safely away from the water.

Hole Number 10 | Par 4King: 355 Palmer: 347 Deacon: 326After making the turn you are faced with a short dogleg left par four that requires you to choose the correct lay up. Ideally you want to play a shot down the right side of the fairway that will leave you with the best angle to the elevated green. Make sure to take enough club to carry on the green or you will land into the false front and be left with a very difficult up and down. If played correctly, you will have a great opportunity at a birdie.

Hole Number Eleven | Par 4King: 376 Palmer: 369 Deacon: 354Another demanding tee shot on this dogleg left par four that starts you out from a shoot of trees to narrow fairway is lined with trees and requires a straight tee shot. From there you will need to carry a hazard that is short of the green and surrounded by trees. This is another shorter par four that puts a demand on accuracy to score well.

Hole Number Twelve | Par 4King: 442 Palmer: 427 Deacon: 386Considered to be the most demanding hole at the Tournament Club of Iowa, this hole is a dogleg left with trees lining the entire left side of the hole. An aggressive tee shot down the left side is needed to

have an opportunity to have a short iron in your hand. Any tee shot that is played to the right side of the fairway adds additional yards to your second shot that requires you to clear a large ravine to reach this difficult green. This hole is considered to be one of Arnold Palmers Dream 18.

Hole Number Thirteen | Par 5King: 526 Palmer: 504 Deacon:485This beautiful par five features the signature Oak tree that is used in the logo for Tournament Club of Iowa, which you must negotiate on your tee shot. If successful, your tee shot, gives you a great opportunity to get home in two. If you decide to lay up, you must make sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the right. A well judged approach is required for this green that runs from right to left. This is a great opportunity to make a birdie or an easy par if played correctly.

Hole Number Fourteen | Par 4/3King: 325 Palmer: 301 Deacon: 258If you are feeling daring this short par four allows you the opportunity to drive the green. However, beware of the danger in not executing the perfect shot. A large drop off right of the green will gather any shot that is unable to carry to the green, and leave you scrambling for par. If you choose to play more conservative, two well struck shots to this green, that slopes from front to back, will leave you a great opportunity to make up a stroke.

Hole Number Fifteen | Par 3King: 195 Palmer: 182 Deacon: 168The first of two consecutive par threes, this hole requires an accurate shot to carry the large ravine short left of the green. Club selection is crucial in hitting this long narrow green in regulation. A pot bunker is situated behind the green to add to the variety of greenside shots around the green.

Hole Number Sixteen | Par 3King: 231 Palmer: 188 Deacon: 174

The last of the par threes, this will test your nerves while hitting over water to this large green. Depending on the wind, this hole can either play extremely difficult into the wind or a little easier if you’re lucky enough to play it downwind. Once on the green, this doesn’t assure you an easy two putt, where three putts are a regular occurrence on this green.

Hole Number Seventeen | Par 5King: 640 Palmer: 595 Deacon: 560This hole is the longest of the par fives at the Tournament Club of Iowa. It features an elevated tee shot with water playing the entire left side of the hole. This is definitely a three shot hole, and you will be glad to reach in regulation. The approach shot narrows at the green with bunkers positioned front and right of the green. This is another large green that slopes from front to back. A par is a great score and anyone making a birdie should be proud.

Hole Number Eighteen | Par 4King: 459 Palmer: 441 Deacon: 339This stunning finishing hole features the clubhouse on top of the hill that overlooks the green. Make sure you have another couple of good shots left because this finishing hole is no time to relax. A good drive will leave you with a second shot that must carry water to a green that is guarded on the left by a steep slope that runs to the water and on the right by a large bunker running the entire length of the green. If you find yourself on the green in regulation, you have played this hole well.

Zach Johnson’s Foundation a star studded event held at Elmcrest Country Club on Monday August 1st raised nearly a million dollars for “Kids on Course.” An amazing variety of local and national sports figures from all around attended the 1st annual event, among about 3,000 spectators. All in all it was a very successful day for not only Zach’s “Kids on Course” but for the entire Cedar Rapids Community. This foundation will give Cedar Rapids elementary school children various experiences to bring them closer to their academic potential off the tee.
