The Hare with Many FriendsAesop’s Fable

A Hare was popular with the other beasts who all claimed to be her friends. But one day; she heard the hounds approaching and hoped to escape them by the aid of her many friends. So, she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he declined, stating that he had important work to do for his master.

The horse felt sure that all her other friends would come to help her.She then approached the bull, and hoped that he would repel the hounds with his horns. The bull replied: "I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady; but I feel sure that our friend the goat will do what you want." The goat, however feared that his back might do her some harm because he was thin and his bones were protruding. The hare felt that the ram was the proper friend to ask for help. So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied, "Another time my dear friend. TEST 7. Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.

The Truth about Stress

Stress is an inevitable phenomenon in a person’s life. Even infants get stressed when they are hurt, hungry or in need of sleep. Stress is a mental or emotional strain resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. When people get stressed, the body reacts by releasing chemicals into the blood.

A person’s stress can be benefi cial and also harmful. Since stress is the body’s natural reaction to circumstances, it can be useful in dangerous situations. When faced with danger, a person’s stress allows him or her to think immediately of a solution for the current problem. However, if the stress is caused by an emotional situation and the person does not have any outlet to channel the diffi cult situation, then the person can become ill. Since stress is inevitable, the only way to beat it or work with it is to know how to manage it.

There are several steps which you can do to deal with stress. First, you must know the sources of your stress. Sources of stress can be physical, mental, emotional or environmental in nature. Once the source of stress is identifi ed, think of appropriate solutions for each problem. For example, if you are experiencing physical stress, then you ought to have enough rest and eat nutritious food.

If you are emotionally stressed, you need to surround yourself with people who can uplift you or give you advice. If you have mental stress from studying or work-related problems, you may take a break or think of strategies to unburden your mind. The next step is to know if you can resolve your stress if you need help from others. Some situations require professional advice from health experts while some just need insights from people who had similar experiences. Finally, you should have long-term solutions to stress. You must accept that life presents challenges and you must be ready to accept these challenges in order for you to handle them well.

In the end, you are still the master of your ship. Decide on what is going to be good for you for a long time and not just a solution for the moment.

TEST 8. Read the text below. Answer the questions that follow.

Global Warming Why should we be knowledgeable about global warming? Global warming is the increase of the Earth’s average surface temperature due to eff ect of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide come from emissions from burning fossil fuels. These trapped gases cause the gradual increase in the Earth’s temperature. If we will not take this problem seriously, our planet will be transformed into a planet that has erratic climate forcing species into extinction. Global warming also disrupts water supply. As a result, there can be increased fl oods in some parts of the world while other parts might experience harsher droughts. In both conditions, food supply will be threatened. In addition, warmer climates will encourage the migration of disease-bearing insects like mosquitoes which cause malaria. Too much trapped heat on Earth can cause polar melting which can destroy polar bear habitat and increase mobile ice hazards to travelling ships. These are just some of the bad eff ects of global warming to humans, plants and animals.

41. What causes global warming?___________________________________________________________42. Why will some animal species become extinct when Earth temperatures change?___________________________________________________________43. How important is it that water supply is not interrupted?___________________________________________________________44. Why is it dangerous for cold regions to become warm?___________________________________________________________

Systematic Systems

Do you ever think about how you are able to see, breathe and feel? Our bodies are made up of diff erent systems. These body systems allow our body parts to function. It is important to be knowledgeable on how each system of the body works in order for us to be aware about how we can take care of them.

One of the most important systems in the body is the circulatory system. The circulatory system is composed of the heart, blood and blood vessels.

The heart pumps blood around the body to transport food, oxygen, hormones, heat and wastes. The blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. These have diff erent functions in the body. The red blood cells carry oxygen. The white blood cells, on the other hand, fi ght disease. The platelets help the blood to clot when we have wounds. Finally, the plasma is a liquid which carries dissolved food and other substances in the body.

The circulatory system’s functions are greatly aff ected by the food that we eat and the physical activities that we have. When we eat too much, fatty foods could obstruct our arteries. When there is less space in the arteries for blood to fl ow, blood pressure goes higher. Higher blood pressure results in hypertension which can aff ect kidney function. Hypertension also increases the chance of heart attack. Blocked arteries also cause blood clots which could block arteries to the brain, which cause stroke, which can damage nerves, and which can cause paralysis. Proper diet and exercise are necessary to ensure a healthy circulatory system.
