Around the Club

VANESSA ROYAL Vanessa has been an outstanding member of our facility since April 2003. When I began my career here at James River, Vanessa was quick to take me under her wing and show me all the ins and outs of proper service. Vanessa has continued to provide support and guidance to me over the years to which I cannot express enough gratitude. Therefore, it is my great privilege to announce Vanessa as our March Employee of the Month.

The Membership Committee and Club staff are developing

the 2018 social calendar. Some of the early highlights will be chef-prepared specials with traditional beers and cider for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 17-18; Spring Lobsterfest on Saturday, March 24, in the River Room; Easter Egg Hunt & Kids’ Carnival, Saturday, March 31; Easter Brunch, Sunday, April 1; and Saturday Night Spring Fever on Saturday, April 7—this will be a great retro dance party! Natasha is also planning a Spring Wine Market Tasting in April similar

to the one we had in the late fall and a Spring Wine Dinner. Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby are both on Saturday, May 5—we’ll see large Kentucky Derby hats and sombreros along with mint julips and margaritas—should be a fun day! We will have an island-themed party for our Men’s Member-Member Tournament in May with a great band and great food. Look for a Cigar and Scotch Dinner in May as well. Keep watching Club e-mails for details and added events!See you at the Club!

Dear Members, In the past two months, many members have noticed some changes in certain recipes, i.e., the fried chicken and the ranch dressing, and have voiced their concern. The fried chicken at the Club has been the same for a long time and, when I read through the recipe ingredients list, I

noticed MSG and a few other hard to pronounce names that I did not feel comfortable serving to the membership. My intention was to find a few alternative ingredients for the original recipes. I tried to replicate the recipes, but have obviously failed, as most of you noticed the change. I have since ordered the old chicken batter but will keep trying to come up with a recipe closer to the original. Please keep leaving your feedback and criticisms and I will work on improving the quality and freshness of the food. I am very happy to be here and only want the best for you, your friends and your family. Bon appétit! André Ebert Executive Chef James River Country Club

Dear Campers and Families,

I would like to introduce myself to you as I will be your Director for this summer at James River Country Club! My name is Kimberly Petrie. I have been teaching elementary school for the last 27 years in Virginia public schools. I taught at William Mason Cooper Elementary in Hampton, Ocean View Elementary in Norfolk, as well as a few other schools. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport University and my master’s degree at Old Dominion University. My favorite quote is, “Experience is the best teacher.” I have had many positive experiences at Camp Young in Chesapeake. I look forward to working with your campers this summer in this new camp environment! I am the youngest of seven children. I am a Filipino-American; my father was born in the Philippines. I enjoy traveling all over the world and have been to the Philippines, Punta Cana, Bermuda, England, Ireland, and Tulum, Mexico. I enjoy seeing how other people live and learning about world cultures. We have so much planned for this summer. I hope to introduce your camper to many STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) at camp. Campers will be given a set of materials and work in a cooperative group to design something new! We will be “thinking out of the box” at camp this summer for sure! I am also looking forward to our fun with foods projects! I can’t wait for camp and to meet you because we are going to have so much fun together!

Sincerely, Kimberly Petrie

Finance Committee

As incoming Chairman of the Finance Committee, I would

like to brief the membership on the current financial management plans for JRCC. In the future, the Board of Directors/Finance Committee will provide regular written updates on our financial activities and status. Over the past several years, JRCC has focused financial management strategies on controlling expenses and limiting increases in dues and assessments, especially during the recession and period of declining membership. In the process, JRCC depleted capital reserves and for the past couple of years dipped into the operating budget to pay for critical repairs and improvements. The result was annual financial operating losses and an unacceptable level of funds in the capital reserve account. The strategies were appropriate for the short term, but unsustainable for the long term health of the Club. As we approached 2018, the Board recognized the necessity of changing the financial management strategy in order to deliver exceptional value to our members. It was clear that JRCC needed to generate dedicated capital funds to cover: (1) capital maintenance for our aging facilities; (2) capital projects that were identified by the members as critical for retention of current members and recruitment of new members; and (3) capital reserves for emergencies.

With valuable input from members through conversations and town hall meetings, the Long Range Planning Committee (now the Centennial Committee) identified and prioritized the capital projects. Over several months, these capital projects along with capital maintenance projections from staff were vetted by the Finance Committee for the purpose of establishing a long term financing plan. The BOD discussed all the options/alternatives and unanimously voted for:n no dues increase for 2018,n a capital assessment of $1,000

for each member (members will be billed $500 in March and $100 for each month April through August),

n a discontinuation of all current assessments and to be replaced with a $94 monthly capital improvement assessment for each member.

Note: Out-of-Town members will pay half ($500) the initial capital investment and a recurring capital assessment that is proportionate to their current payments. The new capital assessments will allow JRCC to replenish the capital reserves to healthy levels and rapidly address much needed facility maintenance and improvements, to include:n Paint, Paint and Paint!!n Improve Wi-Fi, Security and

Phone Systemsn Parking Lot Lighting

n 10th Tee Improvementsn Pool Improvementsn Bunker Replacementn Added Wine Lockersn New Pool Playground and

Furnituren New Banquet Chairsn Golf Beverage Cart and Stretch

Cart for Valet Servicen State-of-the-Art Conference

Roomn Patio Fire Pit and Heatern Tennis Lounge Furnituren Golf Simulator The new capital assessments will also allow us to implement (including all the financing) several capital projects identified by our members as critical, including:n Relocating the Pro Shopn Establish a new and Expanded

Fitness Room (Current Pro Shop)

n Extended Patios and West Porches

n Create Family Fun Center/Kids’ Zone

n Insulate the Tennis Buildingn Beach Pavilion (requires a

membership vote)n Re-Build the Pier The Board of Directors at James River Country Club is committed to making JRCC an “amazing place.” We will continue to listen and make informed decisions that will ensure the long term success of JRCC and deliver exceptional value to every current and future member of the Club.

Golf NewsA Note from the Pro Jeremy Franks, PGA

Golf Committee

Robert F. Lanier, ChairmanReport by Rob Wilmans, Director of Golf and Grounds Maintenance

As we embark toward the future of James River Country Club

and the Centennial plan, I want to thank all of you, our members, for the support of this Club and the golf program. We have seen many changes since my time at JRCC began just seven years ago this month and, this year will be no different. One thing that will never change is our desire to serve you and provide you with a fantastic golfing experience. The 2018 Golf Calendar is official and we look forward to a great tournament season for men, women and junior golfers. The sign-up sheets are posted for our Season Long Match Play Club Championship, gross and net, which is covered by the Men’s Tournament Fund. The Two-Person Team, Season Long Match Play

Championship, open to men and women, is also posted. If you need help finding a partner, please call the Golf Pro Shop and we will help you. The Ladies’ Golf League saw amazing growth last year thanks in part to the developmental weekly clinic that is included in the Ladies’ Golf Tournament Fund. The ladies play exclusively on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. but players can still be eligible for weekly prizes if scores are posted in the golf shop by 5:00 p.m. This allows the golf shop time to score, post prize money and e-mail results. The clinic is also on Tuesdays starting at 11:00 a.m. and provides instruction for all skill levels. If you are interested in joining the Ladies’ League this season, we will be having a Ladies’

Kickoff Clinic on Tuesday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m.! Junior Golfers—please join us on Saturday, March 3, at 4:00 p.m. for the JRCC Junior Golf Kickoff Party! This event will be a fun and informative introduction to all we have in store for the 2018 Junior Golf Season. To ensure that your son or daughter has the proper gear for the coming season, all attendees will have the opportunity to be fit into the correct size U.S. Kids Golf clubs color set. Be sure to bring your putters as we will be kicking off the season the right way with an inaugural putting contest. Snacks will be served and great time will be had by all. Please contact the Golf Pro Shop to let us know you are coming. Our 1st Assistant Golf Professional Joe Dargin is looking forward to meeting you all there!

Slowly but surely we are getting closer to the end of winter! The

last 30-60 days have been very wet in our area forcing us to restrict carts to the paths more frequently than in years past. We continue to run the deep tine aerator on the fairways in an effort to get the moisture off the surface and further down into the soil profile. Wet conditions have also made it tough for us to get out and spray our weed pre-emergent on the Bermuda grass. We still have time to get it finished, but the clock is ticking! Improvements to the property continue around rainy days. The

James River Country Club sign in the parking lot has been taken down, re-painted, and re-installed with new posts. We have been working on the landscape lighting around the clubhouse to improve the lighting quality as well as the visual impact it makes to beautify the property. Our maintenance crew has cleaned out the flower beds on almost all areas of the property—we’re getting ready for spring! The staff has done a great job of keeping the beach and the backyard looking crisp to maximize the views from the restaurant windows.

Speaking of beds and clubhouse grounds, we have hired a new horticulturist, Doug Croft, who will be starting in March. He comes to us from Chanticleer Gardens in Pennsylvania. Doug has his horticulture degree from Virginia Tech and has been working in the field for 17 years. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to reaping the benefits of his knowledge. If you see him around the property, please say hello.

February certainly gave us a taste of the warmer weather to come!

With spring approaching, we have many outdoor activities to look forward to, many of which will be enhanced by our newly approved Centennial Plan over the next couple years! Please, if you haven’t already done so, review Conrad’s Power Point presentation on our website. It has a great summary and pictures of the wonderful projects and future plans for JRCC. I hope you share in the excitement that we have for the future of our Club! Now is a terrific time to bring in new members. Our dues are discounted through 2019 after which they will likely go up as our Club becomes updated and

more relevant. If you know anyone interested in joining, please invite them to one of our upcoming events so they get a true, “James River” experience. Please contact Membership Director Jen Hicks, or myself, for more information on membership. On the social side, our Club continues to host wonderful events, like the Valentine’s Dinner and Dance. Mark your calendars for our Saturday Night Spring Fever on Saturday, April 7! This will be a ‘70s/’80s party complete with disco ball and DJ to dance the night away! If you have any ideas for special events, please let me know! Thank you for your continued support of our Club!
