August Presidents MessageTerry Griffith, Ajinomoto North America and IPLCA President

A memorable 2012 is waning and most of us have time now to reflect on how our businesses performed. It is amazing how attitude affects how we relate to a specific challenge. Labor is

you to make some kind of purchase if you are not already doing so. If your supplier is not one of these four, I would ask that you approach them and ask them to advertise in IPLCA’s “On The Grow”. IPLCA promotes professionalism in the Iowa Lawn Care Industry as well as keeping our members informed as to the legislative climate that affects the lawn care industry and helps to provide educational opportunities to our members and others. Jeff and Sarah are invaluable helps at the Turfgrass Office for established and new, start up lawn care companies.

Lastly, by the time you get this newsletter No-vember will be a memory and the general election will be over. I hope you all took the time to vote and encouraged your employees and all you came in contact with to vote. The lawn care industry is basically considered small business and the poli-tics of each party are going to definitely affect your business whether it be through more regulation, health care, and taxes.Get involved in electing good people to represent us in our democracy. Our system of government is still the best on earth and will only become better with our involvement.

always everyone’s #1 trial and 2012 brought many additional “opportunities” to deal with. Our attitude, whether positive or negative, does have a big affect on our employees and even our customers. When we face obstacles head on with a positive can-do counte-nance everyone is impacted by us. Problems are seen as opportunities, others around us tend to begin to see the possibilities of overcoming a problem, and the world seems a little brighter. Many years ago, I was away from my home on busi-ness. There had been a bad storm and much rain and my wife awoke to find 2 inches of water in the lower level of our home. It was of course finished with carpet and paneled walls. Being not close to help I called my father to see what he could do to help the situation. My wife remembers in the early morning hearing someone coming down the walk to our house whistling care-free and she was cheered to see my father coming to the rescue. He wasn’t viewing the situation as a catastrophe but as an opportunity to correct a problem, to make things better, and wasn’t daunted by the challenge. He has always been my mentor and taught me that having a positive attitude is the most productive way to be and allows me to accomplish the most.Your customers also notice a positive attitude, they appreciate that. You become a leader to your crew and your example tends to breed that same positive outlook in them.

I wanted to address the need to support our advertis-ers that support IPLCA. I would like to thank Pace Supply, Agrium Advanced Technologies, L & M Distributing and River City Turf and Ornamentals for their financial support. I have been a distributor representative for some 30 years and know that there are a lot of ways for a distributor to spend their lim-ited amounts of money for promotion. The best way to thank one or all of these advertisers is to purchase something from them. They may not be your main suppliers and that is alright but it would be meaning-ful to them for

Happy Holidays from Iowa Professional Lawn Care Association

December 2012 Iowa Professional Lawn Care Association6

Wintertime is a time of reflection and planning for many of us; and hopefully a warm vacation some-where. Of course, there is always equipment to tend; but, hopefully, the work is light.

In turf management, the first things on the horizon will probably be these in the spring: Initial fertil-izer applications and pre-emerge weed control. I put together some thoughts and materials here on pre-emerge controls for next season. Just a little refresher course!

All pre-emerge herbicides must be applied prior to the germination of weed seeds and the emergence of weeds. Products should be applied only to estab-lished turf at differing intervals prior to reseeding (de-pends upon exact active and rate). Most herbicides must be watered into the soil immediately after appli-cation. Crabgrass will emerge from the soil from 4 to 6 weeks before it is visible above turf sod. If weeds are visible above the soil, it is too late to apply these

products. Since the best time to make applications depends on the species of weeds to be controlled, and since climate, soil temperature, and other factors may vary from region to region; a single recommenda-tion for the every area and weed cannot be made. For specific information on timing in your area, consult the label or a turf professional. One of the primary criteria for selecting a pre-emergence herbicide is the tolerance of the turfgrass to the herbicide. However; the main actives that we currently use for pre-emerge control (dithiopyr, pendimethalin, prodiamine, etc..) are generally very safe when used correctly on our established, cool season turf types.

Generally, preemergent herbicides are best applied a minimum of 2 weeks before the seed germination of crabgrass. A good index to schedule the initial ap-plication of herbicide in the spring is when the soil temperature reaches 50 to 53°F.

In certain areas, pre-emergent applications may be applied 6 to 8 weeks before the expected seed germi-nation of crabgrass. Sometimes we may use different rates or formulations for the initial and sequential applications. For example, granular products may be used during cold periods in early spring and liquid may be used later in the year. One active may be used for a spring (or initial) treatment, and another may be used for a later treatment. For the control of crab-grass, apply these formulations at the recommended rates anytime from fall (with some products) through early spring for spring and summer control. Again, late winter or early spring applications must be ap-plied prior to crabgrass emergence. Sequential appli-cations of most herbicides have proved more effective than single applications for season-long control of crabgrass. Because the seed germination of crabgrass extends throughout the season, sequential applications at recommended rates to maintain effective control.

Two applications per season are appropriate for crab-grass, foxtail, field sandbur, goosegrass, and annual bluegrass (Poa annua) control on most turf.

Ar least two applications per season are recommend-ed for poa control. For two applications of residual herbicides : Apply the product at the recommended rate before the annual bluegrass emerges from the soil. A second application of these formulations should be made 4 to 5 months after the first applica-tion. For three applications of herbicide (if labeled): Two applications in the spring and one application in the fall of these products will provide high level of pre-emergent control. Remember, annual bluegrass germinates in the fall (winter annual). This is the reason the late summer app helps so much. *some material from PBI/Gordon Pre-emerge Herbi-cide Application Guide.

Across the top we will have a scroll bar and highlight important or upcoming events for all Iowa GCSA, Iowa Sports Turf Managers, Iowa Lawncare Professionals, and the Iowa Turfgrass Insti-tute. Below the search boxes is where all of our available event registrations, mer-chandise and memberships are located. Instead of a list they have been placed in easy to read boxes. Every listing will have a green title. If it is an event, there will also be a link that will bring you to a description of the particular event. To purchase an item or register for an event just click the green title in the box. All events will bring you through a registration questionnaire before bringing to your Shopping Cart. Merchandise and memberships will lead to a description page where you can select add to cart or continue shopping. A new add-ed feature is the Cart box towards the top right hand side of the page. This will keep track of the amount of items in your cart and your running dollar value while you shop! When you are ready to check out you can select View Cart from this box. Review your items and select proceed to check out. From here everything should be the same. If you have questions or have trouble locating an item please don’t be hesitant to call [email protected].
