On the Confinement of Young Ladies in Workhousesand Prisons

n the press at the time, a correspondence on corsets and tight-lacing was

followed, in 1868, by a large number of letters supporting the whipping of girls

in workhouses and prisons. A correspondence on the moral desirability of whipping

and birching young women rumbled on in papers like the Family Herald, with the

discussion coming to a head in 1869 in The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine.

Women who were held in prison could be subject to corporal punishment.

A large number of letters support the whipping of girls in

workhouses and prisons. It was never explicitly stated, but

only occasionally inferred that these whippings and

birchings would be applied to the female posterior. The

actual baring of the buttocks for punishment was never

discussed.

All of the new arrivals were determined to avoid such a fate, little knowing that the

prettier ones had been sentenced to what was in essence a private flagellation harem.

Sent up for punishment, she wastold to remove her outergarments by a gruff looking manwho played a cat and mousegame. He was exceedinglypolite, knowing full well that heheld all the cards. She was stillunnerved having to do this beforea male, not to mention the thinwispy cane he was holding.

But she succumbed to sternthreats of even worse. Turningher back towards him, sheproceeded to strip under hisgaze.

Hoping to keep thepunishment to just athreat, she slowlyslipped down thedrapery of her dress.

They would eventually slip themdown only with great hesitation, andeven then only after a stern rebuke.

”Why you’ve plenty of roomdown there for some stripes.We’ll teach you a properlesson alright“.

He seemed to take aslong a time as possible,slowly tapping the caneseveral times so as toset the distance, andwhisking it through theair so as to get a feel forits springiness. Hedrew out the timeconsiderably.

“Now, as to yer punishment.I’ll give ya the dozen, but I won’tgo too hard, provided ya put yerbottom up nice and high fereach stroke, and bounce it upand down real nice-like eachtime I whip ya. Else I’ll have tolay that dozen on right smart.I’ve been workin’ here fer twoyears. I know how to whip abottom.”

He went on whipping her veryslowly, so that she felt the fullsting of each stroke across herbottom. While these strokes werenot as bad as she had first feared,they still carried a fair amount ofsting. To dispel the smart, shewinced and squirmed every timethe switch fell on her quiveringbottom, and was soon swingingher hips from side to side, archingher loins at one moment, and thenflattening herself down. Betweenher gasps she pleaded with him tostop whipping her.

"Oh, please!--Oh, please!-Please don't whip-me-so-hard! Oh! please!”

… but her entreaties only brought chuckling.

“But I quickly caught myself, andturned toward him hoping that hehad not caught on to theembarrassment of my arousedstate. He just laughed at mydiscomfort, commenting that Ihad put on a good show and thathe had enjoyed giving me awhipping.”
