President’s Corner
Dear Colleagues,
It was my recent privilege to attend the MTNA National Conference. There were many fine presentations and informative meetings. It was very interesting to learn more about the benefits of our MTNA memberships. I’ve heard from some that think our dues get us only a magazine, but there is much more. MTNA supports each state with thousands of dollars to
pay ASCAP licensing fees and the liability insurance available for all OMTA events. If OMTA had to pay these premiums and fees, we would probably cease to exist as the orga-nization we are now. There are also many grants and scholarships available through MTNA, and I urge all of you to seek more information on the MTNA website.
Speaking of grants, many of them are offered through the MTNA Foundation, and our Oregon attendees were so pleased to see NCTM and 50 year member, Joan Gather-coal, NCTM of Corvallis (Linn-Benton Dis-trict), inducted as a Foundation Fellow. Our thoughtful and generous members also raised the funds to name Joan’s late twin sister, Jean Baines Proctor, as a Fellow as well. This was a surprise to Joan and her family. The evening was filled with tears and joy.
It was indeed my pleasure to represent OMTA and meet the other members from throughout the country. Many ideas were shared, and I also realize how much we all have in common. The camaraderie and mutual respect was ever present. I have asked our Music News editor to publish our Code of Ethics in this issue to remind us of the fine and professional association we enjoy.

State News
Marah Nicole Christenson was first in the 2011 MTNA Northwest Division Junior Woodwind Solo Competition held at Boise State University, and competed in the MTNA Nationals in Milwaukee this past March 26th. Her program consisted of the Overture from Suite in A Minor by Georg Philipp Telemann, Andante in C by Mozart, and Madrigal by Philippe Gaubert.
In 2008, at age 12, she began study-ing flute with Sandy Duffy Norman. Her parents are Mike and Ashley Christenson. Marah is the oldest of five children, and enjoys reading, drawing, and crocheting.
Marah received superior ratings at Salem/Keizer Solo and Ensemble Festival for the past three years and has attended a master class with Dr. Sydney Carlson, flute professor at Portland State University, and most recently performed for a master class
Sandy Duffy Norman taught with Dr Hal Ott, professor of Flute at Central Washington University.
When asked about her impressions of the MTNA competitions she replied,” I loved going to the MTNA nationals. It was very fun and exciting. It was cool because the competitions felt so important. I liked meeting people that were around my age and played the flute. Even though I didn’t win, I still had a really good time. I think it was a really good experience and I can’t wait to compete again!”
Says Marah’s teacher, “She shows in-nate musicality and remarkable work ethic. She truly loves music and performing. She enjoys exploring new repertoire and making plans to perform it. Marah is a delightful student and has wisdom, skills, and curios-ity beyond her few years on the flute.”

State News Junior Bach Festival Final Event
Gayle L. Bland, NCTM Junior Bach Festival Chair
March 6 was the Oregon Jr. Bach Festival. The final event was held in Hood River at the Riverview Community Church. The Mid-Columbia District hosted the event. There were two recitals this year. Many piano solos and several organ solos were presented. The string division was rep-resented with cello, violin, and chamber ensemble performances.
Students from all over the state at-tended. The students were well prepared. Baroque music flooded the room along with the beautiful sunshine and a feeling of spring in the air. After each recital the students were honored with a medal. Fol-lowing the recitals Mid-Columbia pro-vided light refreshments for the reception. Parents, teachers and students celebrated in friendship on this important day.
Thank you to Diana Beterbide who worked tirelessly to provide a great experi-ence for our students. A big thank you to Mid-Columbia for hosting the final event. Also thank you to the teachers who pre-pared their students -- Mariann Adams, Kathy Apland, Diana Beterbide, Peter

It is not too early to be thinking about the 2012 Oregon Jr. Bach Festival. With early planning and a little excitement we can get more students involved in this state festival. Talk to your students now about entering in the next district Jr. Bach Festival. Get involved as a teacher in the Bach Festival. Your students will capture your interest and want to perform Baroque music. The age divisions and instrumental categories give the opportunity for any student to participate.

With Spring Syllabus only a distant memory, we look forward to finishing our year with spring recitals and final projects. OMTA State President Fern McArthur vis-ited us in April and presented a program on teaching composition, from beginning to advanced students. Members of our district are working to increase composition among our students, with plans for this summer and next year.

2011 has been filled with activities in the Mid-Columbia District. We have hosted the district competitive Bach festival with 23 entries. Aaron Bloom served as adjudi-cator. We also hosted the regional festival with Jeanine Jacobson as adjudicator and the state final event.
Syllabus evaluations were completed March 2-5 with eighty students representing nine teachers. Our adjudicators were Caro-lyn Mayer, Liz Willis and Cherise DaCunha.
We would like to invite other districts to join us for our June 13th workshop. We are taking advantage of the offer by The Frederick Harris Music Co. to have Forrest Kinney, NCTM, who is a music educator, author, performer, composer and arranger, presenting a free workshop on his new series, Pattern Play: Inspiring Creativity at the Piano. He has agreed to come from Seattle to do the workshop which includes an in-depth look at the music in the series and a demonstration of how each piece expands creativity and improvisational skills. I need to guarantee that twenty will attend. Free
participant packages and a door prize will be given. We will be having our district meet-ing at 9:00 and the workshop will be held from 10:00–noon on Monday, June 13th at Zion Lutheran Church, 101 West 10th Street in The Dalles. District News Tualatin Valley

The Tualatin Valley teachers are busily pre-paring for Spring Syllabus on April 29 and 30. Chairman Sherrene Walker reports that it continues to grow every year. This year we had 24 students participate in the state Composition Festival as reported by our Composition Chairman, Nicola Curry. Our District $500 Scholarship for high school seniors who plan to major or minor in mu-sic at college, chaired by Sherrene Walker, has several students entered for competi-tion this month. Other successful activities this past year have included our Ribbon Festival and Ensemble Festival (chaired by Kristen Cichoski), Jr. Bach Festival (chaired by Gayle Bland) and Sacred Music Festival (chaired by Nancy Brown). There is an activity for everyone almost constantly in this busy district.
Meeting programs continue to stimu-late our members with teaching informa-tion and variety. Barbara Parker focused on teaching Baroque literature, Mark West-cott’s presentation and masterclass, Eileen Knox speaking on higher level syllabus booklets, a recital by our own member Angela Kelly, Dr. Anita King focusing on the art of accompanying, Gina Pruitt’s pre-sentation of “Fun Teaching Repertoire” and our own members participating in a recital at our March meeting.
Our last meeting of the year will be the second Friday of May where we will install our new president, Angela Kelly, at the Tigard Christian Church.

The OMTA Piano Syllabus is an outline of study de-signed to provide students with a thorough background in keyboard skills, musical understanding and perfor-mance ability. The DVDs offer ideas and methods for implementing the syllabus as a basis for learning and performance.
The original VCRs were developed by Virginia Buhn in 1996 and have sold more than 1,200 copies. The new DVDs follow the course outline of the OMTA Syllabus Book and are designed to help piano teachers prepare students for a successful evaluation.

The OMTA Jazz Piano Syllabus was developed by Gary Ruppert in the mid 1980s. A revision, done in the summer of 2003, was based on feedback received from teachers, students, and adjudicators who used the first version. Their comments and encouragement have been of inestimable value

OMTA MERIT CERTIFICATES
OMTA merit certificates are available to OMTA instructors and are earned by students who have completed a minimum of 30 lessons during the current teaching year.
These attractive, parchment-like half-sheet certificates are stamped with the OMTA embossed seal, stamped with the signature of OMTA President, has the student’s name, and has a space for the teacher to sign. The second year of study has a gold seal and every year after that (up to year 14) has a gold seal and a different colored ribbon. The determina-tion of each student’s year of study and all record keeping is the teacher’s responsibility. Certificates are usually awarded
in May or June and should be ordered three weeks in advance of the time the teacher wants to give them to students. You may pre-order via e-mail.
Guidelines for Ordering:1. List the quantity of certificates desired for each level with each student’s name typed or clearly printed.2. Indicate the date you need the certificates (remember to allow 3 weeks).3. Include a check or money order payable to OMTA (50 cents per certificate).4. Include a copy of your current membership card.5. All orders must be received by Robin Power, OMTA Administrative Assistant.
