Community Pharmacy Surrey and Sussex (CPSS)

July 2017 Newsletter.

We represent, support, develop and promote NHS Community Pharmacy in Surrey & Sussex in the interests of contractors and service users.

Post Payment Verification (PPV) Visits A message from Julia Powell, West Sussex & East Sussex LPC Committee member.

The PPV reviews are designed to give assurance to NHS England that claiming has been made in accordance with the service specification. Payment recovery has been made where pharmacies have accidentally misclaimed or where they were unable to provide evidence of the services, in the majority of these cases it has been because they were unable to provide the patient consent forms for the service. If an under claim has been made this is highlighted to the pharmacy and in an example that I had for MUR’s they were able to add them onto their claim the following month. Like any inspection visit being prepared is key to a straightforward verification visit. The majority of these visits are announced with the time and date of the visit confirmed with the pharmacy. In preparation, collating the required data and checking this against the claims will highlight any potential issues which can usually be resolved prior to the visit.

Top tips are:

Collate and file patient consent forms for a service in bundles by the month in which they were claimed for. For example, NMS patient forms should be filed in the month in which they are completed and claimed for, not when the patient first consents to the service.

Keep copies of invoices for expensive out of pocket claims.

Check the number of patient consent forms each month against any computerised record before the service is claimed for. This will highlight any issues early before the claim is made and enable an investigation. Often this will be missing patient consent forms which have been misfiled or where a service was conducted on paper and not electronically so an under claim could have been made.

EPS Enhancements survey – Help shape the future of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

NHS Digital want to know what enhancements to EPS dispensers and pharmacy staff want to see. Complete their EPS enhancements survey and tell them what enhancements you'd like them to prioritise or suggest your own. It only takes 10 minutes. Would you prefer automatic downloads or prescription collation to be included in EPS first? Would you prioritise adding an alert about urgent antibiotics to the script over automatically cancelling all outstanding repeat dispensing regimes when a patient leaves their practice? The 19 enhancements proposed in the survey are based on feedback from users and other stakeholders. Also remember to sign up for the NHS Digital Bulletins: Sign up for Primary Care Bulletins or email [email protected].

Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD)

In support of NHS Digital’s current campaign to increase the use of electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD), PSNC have produced a two-page factsheet for community pharmacy teams. One side contains key phrases to help advise patients on the benefits of eRD, whilst the other side provides a list of questions to ask patients collecting a repeat prescription. PSNC Briefing 004/17: eRepeat Dispensing – A factsheet for pharmacy teams Additional support tools including an eRD toolkit are available here

Be Clear on Cancer—Campaign resources

A reminder that the Be Clear on Cancer campaign which runs over the summer is one of the four campaigns decided by NHS England that pharmacies need to support as part of the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework. It is also a good opportunity to promote stop smoking services to people presenting with coughs and other respiratory symptoms. Plus linking the campaign to the stop smoking service is good evidence for HLP level 1 portfolios. A free pharmacy toolkit to support the campaign, including a pharmacy briefing sheet, two A4 posters, one counter card, two shelf wobblers, one leaflet dispenser, 50 leaflets and access to video briefings for staff are available to order using the code: BCOCRESPPHARMKIT on the PHE pharmacy order line call 0300 123 1019 or through the PHE Campaign Resource Centre website

Community Pharmacy Patient Safety Group

The Community Pharmacy Patient Safety Group is made up of 18 passionate community pharmacy Medication Safety Officers (MSOs) where each MSO is from one of the largest community pharmacy chains, as well as one from the National Pharmacy Association to represent independent pharmacies.

The Group provides a forum for these community pharmacy organisations, competitors in a commercial sense, to openly share and learn from each other when things go wrong, as well as from other sectors and industries, so that they can collectively improve patient care and reduce harm. Would you like to help us improve pharmacist-led care for asthma patients?

A National Institute for Health Research project is wanting to know how UK pharmacists are currently involved in asthma care. The aim is to identify some of the barriers that may be keeping pharmacists from getting more involved in the care of asthma patients. Based on the results of this study, they will develop a pharmacist-led intervention programme that will help asthma patients make the most of their medications.

It takes roughly 20 minutes and it assesses whether pharmacists can target the perceptual and practical barriers to medication adherence in adult asthma patients. Participants can win £200, £100, or £50 of online shopping credit in October. The link to the survey is here More information here

News for High Weald Lewes & Havens CCG Pharmacies. Local Self-Care Campaign being launched in August! Pharmacies should be receiving information on the new Self-Care policy that is being implemented in High Weald Lewes Havens CCG area. The policy is being implemented to:

• Help reduce demand on general practice for minor conditions suitable for self-care, releasing capacity for patients with more serious conditions.

• Empower patients with the confidence to self-care, giving them greater control of their health and encouraging behaviour that helps prevent ill health in the long term.

• Encourage patients to consult with their community pharmacist where appropriate.

As a result they are requesting community pharmacists support this by not referring patients to their practices for any OTC medicines that are appropriate for the treatment of minor ailments, unless clinically appropriate e.g. if outside of product licence or red flag symptoms. A poster and leaflets will be included in the packs to display in your pharmacies. If you require more information please email [email protected]
