What a wonderful couple of weeks I have had at Mareeba State School! I would like to thank Mrs Whybird for the opportunity to fill the position of Principal while she is on leave for the remainder of the term. I have had the opportunity to visit all of the classrooms multiple times since I commenced here and I have been particularly impressed by the quiet and calmness of each room. When our classrooms are quiet and calm (most of the time) this means that we are providing the best opportunity for teaching and learning to take place and this is clearly occurring at Mareeba State School. I have also observed high quality teaching in all of the classrooms, again ensuing your child/ren have every opportunity to learn while at school. (Continued Page 2)

resources. Payment can be made to the office via cash, cheque and EFTPOS. Thank you to the following
families who have recently paid:
Well done to all of our students who last week sat their NAPLAN tests. Students were very well prepared for these assessments and approached them with confidence and a willingness to “do their best”. The tests provide students, parents, teachers and the school with important insights into each student’s literacy and numeracy development. Whilst only a snapshot and just one part of a student’s overall school performance, it has been great to see students approach the tests with diligence, confidence and determination. Thank you to the amazing staff who have worked tirelessly and skilfully to prepare students for this assessment.

At Mareeba State School, every child from Prep to Year 6 has access to ebooks. By following some simple steps, your child can access these ebooks at home on an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android device or PC / Mac
computer. Search in Google: Qld State Schools eBooks. Click on the link, and go to the log in page. On this page, enter your child’s Education Queensland username. This is the first letter of their first name and the first four letters of their surname, followed by a number that is assigned to them (your child’s teacher can help you with this). E.g. John Smith = jsmit29. You are now in the Digital Library. You can search books
according to curriculum, collections, subjects and levels.

Information Reports
1S have been busy learning how to write an information report containing facts about a reptile. Students have learnt how to record facts about reptiles and then turn the facts into detailed sentences, using
descriptive and comparative language. We have been collecting and recording facts concerning the reptile’s name and location, features, habitat, food and an interesting fact about the animal. On Monday, 1S were
learning all about turtles. - Skye Clarkson, 1S Classroom Teacher
News From Year 1...
Fire Brigade Visit Last week, the Year 1 students were lucky
enough to have a visit from the Mareeba Fire Brigade! They learned about what to do in an emergency, how to call 000 and to ‘stop, drop and roll’. After their important lesson about fire safety, these excited students got
to squirt the fire hose! Thank you to the Mareeba Fire Brigade for your visit.
PBL Update Week six! It feels like we only started back at school last week, yet we find ourselves over the halfway mark of term 2. Congratulations to our
students who are receiving bronze wristbands at school. We are starting to see more and more coming through and we will also have
some silver band holders very soon. Keep up the great work! If you are wondering if your child/children are close to receiving a wristband or
how their behaviour is going, please ask their teacher.
Week 6 ‘I Am’ positive behaviour winners (sporting house points):
1st place - Barron (1666 points) 2nd place - Granite (1511 points) 3rd place - Mitchell (1458 points)
“I Am Respectful - I respect all property and people” has been our focus expectation this week. This is a very broad expectation
encompassing all aspects of our lives at school, home, club sports and work. Have a chat with your children at home about how it may look,
sound and feel when we are being respectful to others.

Tableland Schools Science & Sustainability Enrichment Program
Hello, my name is Joelene Findlay and I’m a student in 5S. I have been chosen as a participant to complete
a Science project as part of the Tablelands Schools Science,
Environmental and Enrichment Program. The project I am working on is an environmental awareness
program and I am helping Ms Jess with our school based eco-club called Green Grubs. It is for students who want to learn more about environmental issues
and want to lend a hand to help our school environment. We will be looking into issues like
recycling, composting and water conservation. Keep an ear out for my presentation over the rest of the term.
A couple of weeks ago, Instrumental Music students attended an all day workshop at
Mareeba State High School. Students learned to read one whole page of music for the first time and how to follow a conductor as a band. Well done to all the students who participated and
thank you to Mrs Towne, Ms Braes, Ms Buchanen and Ms Price!

Prep Update
‘Wombat Stew’ Mothers Day Afternoon The Prep ST class honoured their beautiful mothers,
grandmothers and carers for Mother’s Day by having a wonderful afternoon filled with the theme of ‘Wombat
Stew’. The Preps and their guests rotated between activities that included a scavenger hunt, a bush picnic
and a fun game of croquet. Both Preps and visitors had a wonderful time and we thank the year 6 students for
their support on this great afternoon.
Zoo To You
The Prep Literacy unit this term is ‘Wombat Stew’ written by Marcia Vaughan. Wombat Stew allows the Preps to
learn about some unique Australian animals. To further enhance our Preps’ learning, ‘Zoo To You’, a Cairns based
business, came to visit our Prep classes. ‘Zoo To You’ provided an interactive, up close wildlife experience. Each
class had 45 minutes with a fully qualified wildlife educator and five Australian Native animals. Rachel, the
very informative presenter, brought a crocodile, a bearded dragon, a sugar glider, a tawny frog mouth and a black headed python. The Preps got to see and touch these
Australian Native animals without leaving their classrooms. They were delighted with the visit and gained
a new appreciation for our native wildlife.
