With items like large glass hats, lip-shaped pillows and 3D-printed hands, OMEDELBAR is a collection that includes everything to display one’s clothing, accessories and personality. It’s also a limited edition collection, making each product all the more desirable.

MEET BEA ÅKERLUND

Moving between the worlds of film, fashion and music, Bea Åkerlund describes herself as a fashion activist. You may know her as one of the most influential stylist and costume designers in the industry, having collaborated with names such as Madonna, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Rihanna, just to name a few. With her signature over-the-top look, Bea has become known for her unique sense of style, which she always manages to marry beautifully with each artist’s personal expression. And since she’s always ready to expanding her portfolio, she’s now been able to marry her creativity with IKEA.

Bea’s personal signature is the red lip; she even claims to leave her lipstick on when going to bed. So enlarging them and transforming them into pillows were a pretty natural choice for the designer. They’re even available in two sizes.

Exploring new collaborations are a big part of what we do at IKEA. And sometimes we like to step into really unexpected places; places that inspire and fascinate us and help us improve our offering.

For many people, Bea Åkerlund is known as a stylist and custom designer to the stars (think Madonna, Beyoncé and every other A-list name you can imagine). However Bea is more accurately described as a modern day Renaissance woman, being the multi-talented artist and entrepreneur that she is. With her over-the-top look that combines Goth, Punk and a dash of Alice in Wonderland – plus her “won’t quit till it’s perfect” attitude – it’s no wonder that Bea’s work has been coveted for more than 20 years in the industry.

So how is it that IKEA and Bea Åkerlund have joined hand? “It started when Karin Gustavsson – the creative leader for OMEDELBAR – had heard me speak on Swedish radio and apparently this inspired her to reach out. I was really excited, as I’m a huge fan of the IKEA brand,” explains Bea who – perhaps not oddly enough – has a keen interest for interiors. “Style is style, so if you’re interested in fashion, chances are you’ll be interested in interior design.”

Go against the normBea wanted to make a collection that that did two important things. “It should speak to the many, but still be true to who I am. Looking at OMEDELBAR I feel like we’ve really accomplished that, as it contains items that I love and have been looking for myself. I’ve always had a clear vision of what this collection should be, from start to finish. And with it, I hope to inspire people to think outside the box, get them to take a risk and have fun, to purchase something they’d never expect to find at IKEA. Simply put – get people to live a little!”

And indeed OMEDELBAR really is a collection with a strong personality and where unexpected combinations and playful surprises have a big part, such as mixing something feminine and soft with a bit of rock n’ roll. It contains pretty much everything to create the feeling of a boudoir-inspired walk-in closet: large glass

hats, a B-shaped lamp, 3D-printed hands – and of course Bea’s signature red lips transformed into a pillow. Dimensions have been tampered with too, like turning a pocket watch into a big wall clock and creating an oversize vanity mirror. “I love it all, especially the vase shoe, the 3D hand as well as the lips, and one of the things I’ve been using almost daily is the throw which I’ve turned into a poncho.”

A collection with a messageBesides Bea’s incredible sense of style, she also has a message that she wants to share with the world, which is “B. WHO YOU ARE”. This message runs like a red tread through the entire collection, holding it together. Bea explains, “It’s about embracing yourself, no matter what the world thinks of you. And it’s a message that I’ve lived by and that’s shaped me into who I am today.”

As a self-made woman, Bea is a huge role model to people of all ages, especially the young. There may not be a secret sauce to her success, but thinking big is a vital part of it. “I’ve always had ridiculously huge ambitions, all of which I’ve combined with lots of hard work. You need to dare to think differently and dare to take chances. Keep pushing yourself and make sure to listen to your gut. Sometimes it honestly feels like I’ve built my entire career by following my gut.”

The perfect outcomeAll projects have their challenges, and of course so did this one. “Sure, from the beginning I had about 300 ideas that I wanted to bring to life. But IKEA has a lot of guidelines when it comes to packaging and transporation, so that idea of creating a huge shoe-sofa unfortunately got scrapped,” Bea says with a laugh. “In all honestly the whole collaboration was fantastic, Karin really listened to my thoughts as we worked back and forth, and we achieved a perfect flow between the two of us. In the end I’m really happy with the outcome, it’s an ideal balance between IKEA and myself.”

Needless to say, we’re very happy and proud of the outcome too. Because in many ways, Bea Åkerlund and IKEA is a combination that perhaps shouldn’t work... but somehow, it just does.
