Dear Friends,

This weekend’s Gospel comes from Matthew and

describes a journey of faith, a journey that should not

remain stagnant. Yes, it is true, even some of our most

known saints or theological figures have written about

times in their lives when their faith felt “dry” or

“disconnected”; however, what is also true is that in

those stagnant times, their faith never ceased. Prayer

and reflection continued. Jesus is always encouraging

us to continue searching for our “pearl” and to continue

that journey towards the Kingdom.

This weekend kicks off two of our eleven First Holy

Communion Masses. Just over one hundred students

have been studying, praying, and practicing taking for

this next step in their faith journey. Last week, they went

on a First Holy Communion Retreat, either in person or

virtually, where they sent a of time in prayer with their

families. The past few months have given them a lot to

think about. In a blessing, it has provided them almost

three more months of prayer time and reflection on what

receiving the Eucharist is all about. I can promise, the

faith of these young people is not currently stagnant;

rather, they are on fire. I was blessed with the

opportunity to see almost every one of them walk into

their First Reconciliations a few weeks ago more

nervous than words can describe. However, each one of

them left with a smile and a sense of connectedness to

their faith. Finally, they were receiving the grace that

Jesus offers daily. This weekend and in coming weeks,

they are about to receive that grace in emphasis again

as they receive Jesus spiritually, but also physically.

That feeling of being connected to Jesus will be so

great, you will see His light radiating from within them.

However, what is most important is that we as the

Church and the families of these students build on that

relationship with Jesus and continue to give them the

opportunities to go to reconciliation and in receiving the

Eucharist, so much so that maybe it will inspire us as

the Church and the parents to self-reflect on faith lives

as well, especially if they’ve been stagnant lately.

We are all blessed children of God and followers of

Jesus. They are always there, waiting for us to return to

them. Even the strongest relationships have the power

to grow even stronger. Join with me in taking a stance

to not remain stagnant in faith and continue with the

passion like our First Communicants to continually

journey towards the Kingdom.

Steph

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

READING I 1 KGS 3:5, 7-12

The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.

God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”

Solomon answered: “O LORD, my God, you have made me,

your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere

youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of

the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it

cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an

understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right

from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request. So

God said to him: “Because you have asked for this—not for a

long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your

enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is

right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and

understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to

now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

PS 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-128, 190-130

R. Lord, I love your commands.

I have said, O LORD, that my part is to keep your words. The

law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold

and silver pieces.

R. Lord, I love your commands.

Let your kindness comfort me according to your promise to your

servants. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for

your law is my delight.

R. Lord, I love your commands.

For I love your command more than gold, however fine. For in

all your precepts I go forward; every false way I hate.

R. Lord, I love your commands.

Wonderful are your decrees; therefore I observe them. The

revelations of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the

simple.

R. Lord, I love your commands.

READING 2 ROM 8:28-30

Brothers and sisters:

We know that all things work for good for those who love God,

who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew

he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son,

so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and

sisters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he

called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have

revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL MT 13:44-52

Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a

treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again,

and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for

fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and

sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is

like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.

When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is

good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be

at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the

wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace,

where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

“Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.”

And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in

the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household

who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

SANITIZERS DESPERATELY NEEDED!

* POSSIBLE MASS CANCELLATIONS *

With the reopening of our churches to public

Masses, we must sanitize after each Mass in order

to keep everyone safe. This process takes about

5—10 minutes after Mass.

We cannot continue Masses without

volunteers to step up and serve!

Since we must know ahead of time that we have

enough volunteers at all Masses, it is very

important that the volunteer list is up to date

ahead of time. Please go into the ministry

scheduler pro website to indicate that you can

help, this doesn’t take long.

If it is easier for you, call the office to have your

name placed on the volunteer list.

THANK YOU!

HOLY FAMILY PARISH

(Continued from page 3)

lleva a hacerse nuestro pan espiritual.

y contemplación, «adorar, venerar, dar culto, glorificar, amar

y abrazar el Sacramento excelentísimo»; 5) laanticipación

del cielo, «para que, pasado el curso de esta vida, se les con-

ceda como premio».

Holy Family Devotional Booklet Subscriptions

Some of our former parishes subscribed to The Word Among Us, others subscribed

to Living Faith for daily Catholic devotions with Scripture readings and reflections for

the parishioners. Both were distributed 10 times per year (roughly monthly). We will

be consolidating all of our devotional booklets to The Word Among Us to distribute

to all of our church sites in English and some in Spanish also at St. John the Baptist

Church for our Latino families. Living Faith will be discontinued. Anyone wanting a

personal subscription can contact Living Faith at livingfaith.com or call (800) 246-

7390 or for The Word Among Us at wau.org or call (800) 775-9673.

We will also get extra devotional booklets from the popular Little Books (Little Blue

and Little Black Books) for Advent and Lent. The devotional booklets will be

available in the bulletin bins outside of each church entrance for pick up.

Because the church subscriptions are delivered in bulk, the cost is just about $16

for 10 months of editions, but almost twice that amount for personal mailed

subscriptions.

Many devotionals are available electronically for a reduced cost also. Parishioners

are welcome to take The Word Among Us booklets for free, or offer the small

donation in their weekly envelopes for the cost to the parish.

DON’T BE FOOLED!

Several parishioners at St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist

Church Masses last weekend reported a family standing

outside with a sign asking for financial assistance.

Solicitations such as this are NOT permitted and this family

was told that but continued to solicit. Sister Lynn Miller is our

Parish Social Minister and takes calls for assistance and

even emergency assistance on the weekends. Please do

NOT give anyone financial assistance, but refer them to

the bulletin to contact Sister Lynn Miller. She can determine

if the need is real or if it is a false need or scam. Whenever

we are aware, we will contact the police in the future if

anyone attempts to solicit parishioners after Masses.

As a reminder also, no one from the parish clergy or staff

will ever ask you to get gift card codes online. This is a

known scam. Please do not respond to such emails or text

messages, as they are from fake email addresses and

phone numbers.

Holy Family School Principal Mr. Beau Quattrone and his daughter Anna,

were recently featured on the Diocese of Pittsburgh Website on the Schools

Page. Mr. Quattrone has attended, been a teacher and now a principal in

Catholic schools. “I always tell students that no matter what, Jesus loves you

and God will show you the way,” he said. “He has a path for each and every

one of us.” Not only has Mr. Quattrone taught and is the principal in a Catholic

school, he and his wife, Jennifer, also sent their three children to Catholic

grade school, high school and two to Catholic universities. After graduating

from Serra Catholic High School in 2014, Anna earned a bachelor’s degree in

communications and Hispanic studies from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and is the

Marketing Coordinator in the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Washington.

Thank you to the Quattrone Family for their dedication to Catholic Schools.

HOLY FAMILY PARISH COVID19 ACTION PLAN

I. FOR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE CONTRACTED OR BEEN EXPOSED TO COVID19

A. When a Parishioner has contracted the COVID19 virus or is showing symptoms of COVID19 or has come

in contact with someone known to have COVID19, they should call and inform the Pastor or the Holy

Family COVID19 Coordinator (HFCC). The following procedure should then be followed.

 1. The following COVID19 screening ques*ons should be asked of the Parishioner by the HFCC:

  a. Have you developed any of the following within the last 2 weeks? Cough, fever, swea*ng or

chills, new shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, new sore throat, muscle aches,

  nausea, vomi*ng or diarrhea?

  b. Have you had your symptoms for more than a week, or have they worsened recently? ______

  c. Have you been tested? ________ Result or advice from doctor ________________________

If there are YES responses to Ques*ons a., b., and c., we will con*nue with the HOLY Family COVID19

 Protocol.

 2. The parishioner/s or staff who has contracted or has symptoms of COVID19 should contact their

doctor, selfisolate at home, selfmonitor for symptoms and follow CDC guidance if symptoms

 develop.

 3. The Pastor or HFCC will determine whether the individual diagnosed with COVID19 came into contact

with any parishioners, and if so, where and when such contact took place.

 4. The HFCC and staff will email or call and inform all those who have had close contact with the person

diagnosed with COVID19 to stay home and selfmonitor for symptoms, and to follow CDC guidance if

symptoms develop. Those signed up with someone a9ending Mass will be asked to alert everyone that

 was signed up with him/her.

 5. The Pastor or the HFCC must no*fy the Diocese, parish staff and, if necessary, local health officials

immediately of any possible case of COVID19 while maintaining confiden*ality consistent with the

Americans with Disabili*es Act (ADA), HIPPA and other applicable federal and state privacy laws.

 6. All areas that were used by the sick person cannot be used un*l a?er sani*zing is completed in all

areas. Ensure safe and correct applica*on of sani*zing products and keep such products away from

 children.

 7. The Pastor or the HFCC will communicate and inform the Holy Family Parish about the possible

 COVID19 exposure and situa*on.

 8. The parishioner/s or staff who has contracted or has symptoms of COVID19 must in all cases keep the

Pastor or HFCC informed of the results of their tests and anything else pertaining to the virus. This can

be by phone, email and/or tex*ng. 100% transparency between the person infected or exposed with

the Pastor and/or the HFCC will help to keep the en*re community safe and informed.

 9. When the parishioner/s or staff who has contracted or has symptoms of COVID19 has tested nega*ve

for the virus the Pastor or the HFCC will communicate and inform the Holy Family Parish of the

situa*on. Those signed up with someone a9ending Mass will be asked to alert everyone that was

 signed up with him/her.

10. If the parishioner/s or staff who has contracted or has symptoms of COVID19 and has definitely

tested posi*ve the Pastor may choose to cancel or livestreamONLY Masses. However, Masses may

con*nue if temperature scanning is screened for all parishioners a9ending Mass. If it can be

determined that anyone had contact with the person who tested posi*ve for more than 15 minutes

with less than 6 feet distance, further selfisola*on may be required to follow all CDC, state and

 federal guidelines.

Addressing the challenges of COVID19 are constantly changing, so this Acon Plan is also subject to change.

On Mission Prayer

Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The

Church Alive! endow us with your gifts of courage,

collaboration, and compassion. Help us to fulfill the

mission of Jesus and his Church through vibrant

parishes and effective ministries. Raise up selfless,

energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and

with care. May we the Church of Pittsburgh in

Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and

Washington Counties be sustained and

strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus,

to love Jesus and to live Jesus. Hear this prayer

and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the

help of our dear Blessed Mother, under the mantle

of her love. Amen.

A Prayer for the Pastoral Council Process

Come, O Holy Spirit of the living God, and show us

your ways. Guide our parish discernment of those

who are called to the ministry of leadership in and

through the work of the parish pastoral coun-

cil. Grant us wisdom to know our gifts. Call us to

put those gifts at the service of your people. Give

us zeal and holy courage to respond generously to

your invitation. And grant your grace to all in our

parish faith communities as they seek to live out

the mission of Jesus. We pray this in his name,

who with you and the sustaining Father is one

God, forever and ever. Amen.
