FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear O’Loughlin Community, Some days are just awesome. Our Athletics Carnival was one such day. I felt incredibly proud to be a part of the day, witnessing the wonderful participation of the students and reveling in the House and College spirit. I thank all our students, our terrific House Captains, our energetic, fearless staff, and all our supportive parents and community members who helped out on the day. The Year 12s did a brilliant job on the BBQ and Emma Gonzadi (Year 8) and family kept our sugar levels up as they raised money and awareness for the Shave for a Cure campaign. The competition was very close all day and we were not able to announce a winning House – to be confirmed this week! These carnivals and other school activities certainly complement all of the hard work and dedication that is shown in our classes as we strive for academic success. They help to build our sense of belonging and enhance personal development in so many ways. Our AFL teams, both boys and girls, have been competing over the last number of weeks and the College spirit on show during these games has also been wonderful to see. Well done to all players and thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Coaches, in particular Ms Isabelle Hoadley, Mrs Debra Bonde and Mr David Paull. Congratulations to Maddie Gault on being selected for the ALLIES AFL Squad! Maddie represented the NT in the Australian Under 18 Women’s AFL competition and her excellent performances earned her selection for the ALLIES (made up of S.A, N.T and Tasmanian players). Well done on your efforts, Maddie. Naplan is complete for another year and I was pleased at the manner in which our students and staff approached the tests. All were calm and focused and hopefully did their very best. As I have discussed in a previous article, Naplan results can provide us with valuable data to inform our teaching and learning – in what areas are we academically strong and what areas require focus and enhancement. Our Vision and Mission is about ‘Fostering High Achievement’ and we will continue to use all academic data to help us to achieve. The Big Bike Ride was a huge success again this year. Twenty six determined riders conquered the 120 km challenge and once again proved that if you set your mind to it and

put in the effort, you can achieve anything. Huge thanks to the leadership of Mr Garry Blackett. Finally, I have to say it, well done to Imogen Bowden (Year 11) for being selected in the NT Debating Team. Thanks go to Ms Therese Schembri, Ms Caitlin Orr and Mr Jason Tutty for their leadership of our O’Loughlin Debating teams. If these incredible teachers did not spend the extra time and effort, above and beyond expectations, our students would not have such a brilliant opportunity. I thank them as the Principal, but more importantly as Imogen’s father. Busy and exciting times lay ahead, with exams, reports, camps, retreats etc, and I wish everyone every success in their endeavours. All the best. Rhett Bowden

GENERAL NEWS

O’Loughlin Catholic College Debating A big congratulations to Imogen Bowden in Year 11, who will be heading off with the Northern Territory Debating Team to the Australian Championships in Brisbane on Saturday 20th of May. She will return the following Sunday having spent the entire week debating against the ablest students from every other State and Territory. Imogen has debated with the College senior team for the last two years and is our current Captain and third speaker; having developed a strong ability to analyse, evaluate and rebut opposing arguments in the incredibly short time allowed in a debating match. At the Australian Championships, debates are adjudicated by three adjudicators, with wins given as unanimous (all three adjudicators agreeing on the winner) or split (two adjudicators against one). Imogen and her team will be competing against other State teams whose players have been selected from hundreds of debaters from the top schools in each State. New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory are historically the two dominant teams, having won the most Australian Championships, however, Queensland are the reigning champions with a home ground advantage this year. Victoria, like its capital Melbourne, can also put on an amazing show as long as it doesn’t rain! With such intense competition any split decision win would be a brilliant outcome, and a split decision against (with one adjudicator out of three awarding the Territory a win) would be an outstanding achievement. Over the gruelling week, the Territory team will debate the other State teams in the following order; QLD, ACT, Tas, WA, NSW, SA and Vic. Good luck Imogen. Ms Schembri, Ms Orr, Mr Tutty OCC Debating Coaches

FROM the SENIOR SCHOOL

Mother’s Day BBQ Breakfast at Holy Family Catholic Primary School

It was great to see some of our Year 10 Youth ministry students, along with Samantha (Yr 7) and Michael (Yr 9), down at Holy Family Primary School to assist with their annual Mother’s Day BBQ Breakfast. They did a fantastic job cooking, preparing and serving the food and drinks. Donations made by the Holy Family community will go towards this year’s Ignite Conference in Brisbane. Thanks again to Mr Shane Donohue and all at Holy Family who made us feel so welcome and appreciated.

GENERAL NEWS

Stage 2 Religion Studies Excursion

Last Friday, the Stage 2 Religion Studies class went on an excursion as part of their 'Religious Expression in the Local Community' assignment. We visited a Mosque, Buddhist Temple and a Catholic Church, in order to explore their unique characteristics. Prior to the excursion, our class researched similarities and differences between each of the places of worship. We identified themes such as; art and architecture, communal space and administrative areas.

The first stop was at the Buddhist temple. Here, we were received very kindly and shown around by Sheila. We also met the monks, and were intrigued by their simple ways of living. Afterwards, we travelled to the St Martin de Porres Catholic Aboriginal Community church in Casuarina. We met Fr. Brian who educated us about the history and significance of that church. We also participated in a short liturgy, which many students said was a profound experience.

Finally, we visited the Mosque on Vanderlin Drive, where we were gladly welcomed by the community. Since it was a Friday, we were able to observe Friday prayer. Afterwards we were treated as special guests; given food and drinks and a tour of the mosque and the community centre. At around 2.45pm, we returned to school, having attained firsthand experience of these different religious communities in Darwin.

On behalf of my class, I would like to thank Mr. Bourke and Mr. Tutty for organising this trip, as well as all the members of the Buddhist, Catholic and Islamic community who facilitated our visits.

Kevin Tomy, Yr 12 Religion Studies Student.

MAY 2017

DEAR STAKEHOLDER

VANDERLIN DRIVE DUPLICATION ASPHALT WORKS

Please turn over to view a map of the worksite

DEPARTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE, PLANNING AND LOGISTICS

Work is continuing on the duplication of Vanderlin Drive between Mueller Road and the McMillans Road roundabout. Once complete the duplicated carriageway will improve traffic flow and reduce traffic congestion between the northern suburbs and McMillans Road, Stuart Highway and Palmerston.

The road upgrade will provide two dedicated traffic lanes for both inbound and outbound traffic. Vanderlin Drive is a key connector route between Darwin’s northern suburbs and Palmerston, and the duplication will improve road safety and cater for future growth of the area.

As part of the next stage of the project, asphalt works will commence in the week beginning Monday May 15 and continue intermittently for the following two months. It is not anticipated there will be any distruption to traffic as a result of the asphalt works.

Works will take place during day time hours only between 7am and 5pm.

Vibrating rollers will be used to achieve the required compaction for the road surface.

Residents in the area are advised that they may experience a slight increase in noise. Appropriate measures will be taken to reduce and suppress noise wherever possible, and noise and virbation will be monitored and contained as outlined in the contractor’s environmental management plan.

We appreciate your patience while we deliver these important upgrades.

Should you have any queries or concerns about the work being undertaken, please contact Senior Project Manager Ben Langdon on 8999 4822 or email [email protected]
