ABOUTUS...

Located just north of Washington, D.C. in Montgomery County, Maryland, Olney Theatre Center offers a diverse array of professional productions year-round that enrich,

nurture, and challenge a broad range of artists, audiences, and students. An award-winning regional theater, Olney is one of two theaters in the country

to operate under a Council of Stock Theaters (COST) contract with Actors’ Equity Association.

We have enjoyed a rich tradition of producing lively and provocative theatre over the last 75 years. The OTC campus now boasts two

proscenium stages, a studio theatre, an outdoor theatre, and a rehearsal hall as well as administrative offices, fully equipped

scenery and costume shops, and residence halls.

Our mission is to create professional theater productions and other programs that nurture artists, students,

technicians, administrators, and audience members and to develop each individual’s creative potential

using the skills and imaginative possibilities of theatre and the performing arts.

Each class of full-time interns plays an essential role in Olney Theatre Center operations. Working in every department of production, interns will learn standards of professionalism while building their resumes and/or portfolios, making them more marketable to future employers.

Olney Theatre Center Internships offer emerging theatre artists a bridge between the university and the profession. The internship aims to develop each individual’s skill and knowledge of the professional theatre world through hands-on work in a professional theatre.

Interns work alongside production staff and directly with visiting directors and designers on various productions in a variety of spaces. From a one-man show performed in a black box to a full-scale, main stage musical, OTC produces a range of theatrical productions.

Each participant will explore his or her chosen discipline (lights, costumes, etc.) while exploring other interests within the theatre. However, acceptance of an internship requires a full-time commitment. Due to the variable and extended hours of the program and the nature of theatre work, outside employment is not possible.

CARPENTRY

Carpentry Interns work directly with the Technical Director and scene shop staff to construct and install scenic elements for all productions. They also serve as running crew for some productions.

While using basic methods and skills necessary to produce sets, interns will learn the daily operations while observing how to maintain a full-season scene shop. They will gain hands-on backstage experience in a professional environment.

This internship will strengthen skills and learn new and resourceful methods of stagecraft and is suitable for those working towards careers as Master Carpenter, Technical Director, and General Theatre Technician.

Electrics Interns work directly under the supervision of the Master Electrician to implement the lighting design for each main stage production. Interns will also work alongside local and visiting lighting designers and theatre electricians.

Responsibilities will include assisting with load-in, hang and focus, trouble-shooting problems during tech rehearsals, maintenance of electrics equipment during the run of the production, and participation in all lighting strikes and changeovers. During the run, they share the responsibility for maintaining the show and running the light board and follow spot. Experience working on electrics crews and awareness of current lighting consoles and equipment is preferred.

This internship hones the skills of the theatrical lighting technician, imparting a working knowledge of design implementation and is suitable for those working towards careers as Master Electricians and Lighting Designers.

Costume Shop Intern 2011-2012

Working directly with the Costume Shop Manager and visiting designers, Costume Shop Interns will assist in the construction of costumes and will serve as wardrobe crew, which includes maintaining and repairing costumes and wigs during the run of each show.

The Costume Shop Interns will handle some projects from inception to completion. Through observing the daily shop operations, the interns will strengthen sewing skills and learn construction skills as well as wardrobe management.

This internship is suitable for those working toward careers as First Hands, Cutters, Drapers, Costume Shop Managers, and Wardrobe Supervisors.

COSTUMES

PROPSThe Props Intern will assist the Properties Master in creating and/or sourcing all props for the main stage season and will have the opportunity to work closely with guest designers. He or she will have the opportunity to talk through designer visions and will assist in shopping and decorating.

Duties may include creating prop lists, attending design meetings, pulling rehearsal props, and research. The intern will work directly with both the costume and scene shops. Additional responsibilities include coordinating props rentals and maintaining inventory. The intern will also be in charge of all props for our annual production of A Christmas Carol. Additionally, the Props Intern will have show duties (i.e. running crew).

The ideal candidate is a problem solver with a sense of humor and is able to work independently. He or she should be comfortable with power tools, painting techniques, and working with fabric. Excellent email communication skills are required, and a valid driver’s license is a plus.

The Production Management Intern works directly with the Director of Production to record, reconcile, and report budgets and expenses. He or she will assist in the daily operations of the Production Office, including contracting, receiving and processing purchase orders and check request forms, and assisting in the management of production calendars, contact sheets, databases, and policies.

The intern will also assist and shadow the Director of Production in a variety of meetings with production and creative personnel. Additional responsibilities include company management coverage and run crew assignments.

Candidates should be able to multi-task and establish priorities, be detail-oriented, and be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. This position allows the intern to direct his or her experience to suit one’s individual interests and is appropriate for those working toward careers as Production Managers, Producing Directors, and General Managers.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

Stage Management Interns work as assistant stage managers and run crew alongside Equity stage managers and actors. Interns will start with a production during the stage manager’s prep week, assist in daily rehearsals, and run the show through the closing performance.

For each production, interns will be assigned responsibilities such as tracking props, costumes, or sets or making script revisions. When not assigned to a show, stage management interns will assist with office work, as well as other areas of production.

This internship is best suited for those working towards careers as professional stage managers. Interns are eligible to join the Actors’ Equity Membership Candidacy Program, potentially leading to full membership at the end of their internship.

STAGE MANAGEMENT

EDUCATIONThe Education Intern works with the Director of Education and the National Players General Manager to plan and manage the Education Department of Olney Theatre Center, including America’s longest-running touring company, National Players.

The intern works with the Education Department to create study guides and program notes for OTC main stage and National Players productions. He or she will work directly with local schools, assisting to coordinate and host student matinees.

He or she will assist the National Players General Manager with National Players tour administration from the home office at Olney Theatre Center and will help with venue correspondence. He or she will also be responsible for updating National Players databases and other materials. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

This internship is suitable for those working towards professional careers in Arts Management or Arts Education.

CASTINGThe Casting Intern is the frontline of actor contact, as they schedule and attend all local auditions. They also work with New York casting agencies to prepare for out-of-town auditions.

In the office, the Casting Intern will handle the maintenance of casting files while assisting the Company Manager with actor contracts and guest artist logistics. The Casting Intern will become very familiar with the Actors’ Equity Association rulebook. Candidates should be able to work independently and be prepared to take a large amount of responsibility. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must.

This position allows the intern to direct his or her experience to suit one’s individual interests and is appropriate for those working toward careers as Casting Directors, Casting Agents, or Directors.
