In Memory of

Paul Gray 1930-2012

Paul Gray, who served on OLLI’s Science and Mathematics Committee for many years as both a course developer and presenter, died May 10 from injuries suffered in a car crash. His classes on developments in the world of computing were popular and appreciated for their clear explanations of technology as well as their insights into life-changing possibilities. His wife Muriel Gray, also an OLLI member, said that as a professor emeritus at Claremont Graduate University, he loved sharing his knowledge and skills with fellow OLLI members.

In Memory of

Jean Marie Hunter

May 3, 1941 - June 16, 2012 Jean, a longtime OLLI member, died on Saturday, June 16th. She had been in a nursing facility for some time and a week or so ago she had a bad fall, had surgery, and never recovered. Jean and her husband, Gordon, often facilitated OLLI Arts and Humanities courses. In addition, the Hunters worked as a team with Judy Gould (AH Curriculum Chair) mailing newsletters and catalogs in the “old days” and would even fill in for her when she traveled. Jean loved to take notes in the courses she attended, and always had a friendly smile for everyone she met.

In Memory of

Beatrice (Billie) Young

OLLI has lost an intrepid and indefatigable lifelong learner. Professionally a high school English teacher; literature, poetry, music and most of all, theater, were her passion and muse. Billie led a full ac-tive life and lived it on her own terms. She succumbed while swimming during her usual 5a.m. laps Sat-urday, July 23. She was 98 years old. OLLI programs were a gift to her for the last eleven years. You could always recognize Billie wearing one of her signature hats and hearing her distinctive voice following a musical, theatrical program or book discussion group at the Newport Beach library.

BOOK AND FILM REVIEWS

A MUST SEE FILM

MOONRISE KINGDOM, directed by Wes Ander-son, written by Roman Coppola and Wes Anderson, 94 minutes of magical, original storytelling. The movie unfolds as a beautifully stitched quilt of 1960’s American Gothic (think Grant Wood’s farm couple portrait). The look is carried throughout, characters stand straight and slender as arrows and the landscape shows regionally rough and rural; it was filmed in and around Naragansett Bay, R.I. The story of a pre-teen boy and girl is told in Long-fellow poetry cadence. Music advances the story,

weaving Benjamin Britten and Leonard Bernstein with original tunes, pop, & country-blues. The sur-prising, enchanting rhythm of the movie and its sa-tirical portraits of 1960’s America drives perform-ances. Bruce Willis, Barney Balaban, Bill Murray, Francis McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton , among many talented others, add richness and humor to this thoroughly enjoyable film.
