OLGA GONITHELLIS YOUNG PROFESSIONAL OF THE MONTH JANUARY 2015 The Philo4Thought Hellenic Professional Mentoring Initiative presents our January 2015 “Young Professional of the Month” Feature Article! The goal of our publications is to provide positive, successful role models who will inspire the next generation of young professionals. A preliminary criterion for #YPM candidates is their active engagement in an entrepreneurial initiative or career path. Candidates are typically of Hellenic origin and part of a philanthropic, humanitarian or environmentally conscious field. The most essential qualification they have in common, however, is the spirit and compassion to persevere, and the heart to share their knowledge and experience with others. We interviewed this month’s featured young professional, Olga Gonithellis, at Grand Café in Astoria NY one sunny afternoon and were so pleased to find out about her progress in the field of Psychology! We are honored to start the year by sharing her professional journey with you, dear readers. THE JOURNEY & “AHA” MOMENT: Olga has an MA and EdM in Counseling and Clinical Psychology from Teachers Collage at Columbia University and specializes in mental health for artists, performers and creative individuals. Olga’s goal is to focus on the mental health of this population based on her training and her keen interest in music and art. When asked to describe the "AHA" moment when she identified her desired career path she explains that it was not a linear journey.” After working in a number of settings (school, outpatient clinics, substance abuse and community centers), I felt more and more inclined to want to integrate my background in the performing arts and my interest in creativity into my work as a mental health professional. After a discussion with a colleague on this topic, I remember going home and thinking ‘Why hadn't I thought about this all this time?’ Now, I work out of my private practice in Manhattan where I see adults, children and adolescents on a wide range of mental health concerns, and luckily am able to work with musicians, photographers and performers, and to focus on the psychological well‐being of creative individuals. It frees up my creativity as an artist as well.”
